Lush Zeste Hair Gelly Review
Lush Zeste Hair Gelly is a new hair gel that Lush recently introduced to its permanent collection! As a rather big fan of Lush King of Mods (and the long since gone Goth Juice, just because of the name alone mind you) I was quite excited that Lush Zeste Hair Gelly decided to make an appearance!
Let’s check it out!
Lush Zeste Hair Gelly is, well, exactly that. Just like Lush’s Shower Jelly Collection, Zeste, has that wibbly wobbly (time wimey) type texture that reminds me of this Jello mold that a friend of my mother’s used to make that was green and had Cheerios embedded in it, seriously, true story, it had Cheerios in it which in turn reminds me of that weird “It’s alive” blob from Better Off Dead. This is actually one reason I dislike it but more on that later!
Lush Zeste was inspired by 70’s punk hairstyles but lord knows the hold on this stuff is more along the lines of 80’s Aquanet hair spray! It’s a fairly water based gel created with orange juice and glycerine as well as sweet orange oil and other yummies which makes it smell like Orange Blossom but lord knows it has the hold of a real champ! It doesn’t give me that hard, sticky gel finish but does provide softer yet fairly excellent hold so it’ll crunch up curls and while smoothing frizz or smooth back hair without giving that greasy finish! A little goes a fairly long way and the natural sugars are what help to give it such a great hold so your hair stays in place!
The Orange Blossom fragrance is divine and it lasts well into use so application in the morning results in plenty of “Wow, what is that fragrance you’re wearing?” or “That’s so pretty, what did your wash your hair with?” It’s a scent that lingers and has a nice throw too!
My problem?
The texture!
It actually has a Jello mold like texture so rather than a looser liquid gel you have more of a solid chunky jello formula. You’re basically removing chunks of the gel from the pot and you have to squish it up to get a good texture to use in your hair. Even after squishing it I find it’s still chunky and not the ideal texture for a gel! You’re liking going to see a good deal of build up fast due to the unusual texture. Although I will say so far, after nearly two weeks of using it, I haven’t noticed too much build up! I just find the texture a little odd and wish it was more of a traditional gel.
Outside of the unusual texture, Lush Zeste Hair Gelly is actually really a nice product if you’re a gel user as it provides a firm hold, excellent frizz control, a great way to refine and hold curls, plus the added benefit of a gorgeous fragrance!
It’s available now at Lush stores or online at lush.com.
