NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer Review & Swatches

NYX Proof It Waterproof Primer

NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer ($7) is NYX’s newest eyeshadow primer for Fall 2014 that promises not only to intensify shadows but also to waterproof them.

Granted, I didn’t nor will I attempt to swim in eyeshadow so we’ll just have to test this one against the warmer weather eh? It’s probably great if you have oily lids as that’s where the “waterproof” benefits will kick in!

NYX Proof It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer

For me NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer feels like a re-imagined version NYX HD Eye Shadow Primer which, hey, is a good thing because I liked that formula.

NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer

NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer has a sponge tip applicator for application and is a milky lighter nude shade that applies transparently. I find it looks a lot like HD Eyeshadow Primer and even feels like it but it does have a certain tackiness to it that the HD formula lacked. The tackiness isn’t an issue for me as once applied it sets to a smoother, matte finish. You can actually feel it on your lid as it creates a sort of film across your lid for shadow to adhere to!

I wouldn’t say it intensified the look of my shadows but it did well keeping them locked onto my drier eye. I tested it in cooler and extremely warm weather (around 90 degrees) and my shadows stayed strong for about 6 hours and I saw very, very minor creasing in the inner corner of my eye at hour seven but not creasing across my entire lid and my shadow didn’t fade either through that wear.

I think I had a bit better performance with the HD Eyeshadow Primer formula but this wasn’t too shabby either. I think that oily lids will like it but I do thick the tackiness will be initially frustrating for some but I felt it disappeared quickly once I blended.

NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer isn’t a game changer but it is a fairly decent shadow primer that kept my shadow wearing fairly well!

It’s available now at nyxcosmetics.com.

Hm I always have to use eyeshadow primers because I actually have some oily eyelids which causes the eyeshadows to just disappear after an hour or so. I wonder how this would do on that. The rest of my skin is dry as heck despite it being summer. Funny how that works huh? I might give this a go since I’ve been trying to find an eyeshadow primer that is budget friendly. So far I’ve just been using the color tattoos or paint pots.

it kinda creates a film over your lid so if your lids are oily it’ll likely do well but it is a bit tacky at first application!

“It’s probably great if you have oily lids as that’s where the “waterproof” benefits will kick in!”

I’m not so sure about that, Muse, only because truly waterproof makeup is removed using oil-based products…

Could you test it’s efficacy by applying it to the back of your hand, then putting some powder shadow over it and once it’s dry, running your hand under water? If it’s really making the shadow waterproof, the water *should* bead up and the shadow should not wash away.

i’ll give it try twirlgirly when I get home from work

This is a must try for me. With eyes that constantly tear (I have a dry eye condition that means I have to have my tear ducts plugged so my corneas don’t get damaged), I despaired of ever finding a primer that kept my eyeshadow on longer than 2 hours without crusting and washing away until I tried Lime Crime Eyeshadow Helper which is my only HG product. But with a $20 plus shipping price tag and the fact that they are constantly out of stock on items, I would love a reliable, affordable backup. How would you say this compares?

    • Isabella Muse

i’m not sure I never tried Lime Crime anything sorry Eriu 🙁

      Eriu,

I have a similar issue…one of the tear ducts in my right eye is blocked due to scar tissue in my sinuses and nose as a result of an auto accident years ago. My right eye waters like crazy and the tears flow up onto my eyelid, and what powder shadows don’t wash away become crusty. I haven’t been able to wear powder shadows since the problem began a couple of years ago….

I hope this product will truly make it possible for me to wear powder shadows again, until I am able to get my nose fixed and that tear duct opened up again!

I have been using this product over the last week and love it. I really like their waterproof brow gel too.

I bought this product but haven’t played with it yet. I figured it might be nice 🙂

Hi, Miss Muse! I have the HD Eyeshadow primer and I love it! Actually, it’s my favorite of the NYX products I own. I used it during an office party and my eyeshadow stayed put for more than 12 hours. I don’t think I had creasing, considering I have a very oily face and eyelids. Since I haven’t used it that much, I don’t think I’m need of another primer.

i really liked the hd eyeshadow primer too 😀 glad to hear you love Christine!

  • Rebecca

Yep, for some of us waterproof makeup is less for swimming and more for commuting to the office when it’s horribly humid out.

This one is a must-try product of NYX 🙂 I’ll surely buy one.

I just tried it with stick eyeshadow (not a powder) and it looks horrid at the end of the day, all crusted up all over my eyelids. I’ll try it again with powder shadow, but this experience wasn’t pretty.

oh wow sorry to hear it! Normally I don’t use primer with cream shadows, they seem to stick fine without for me!
