MAC Fluidline Eye Pencil Review & Swatches
MAC Fluidline Eye Pencil ($16) is a new, twist up eyeliner pencil that MAC launched with their new A Novel Romance Collection. Being a massive fan of MAC Technakohl I was excited about a new mechanical eyeliner pencil plus add to the fact that Fluidline is one of MAC’s more legendary products and it seems I had an instant hit on my hands.
Mmm or not…!
MAC Fluidline Eye Pencil will be available in seven shade selections with the MAC A Novel Romance Collection launches August 21st. Fluidline has always been in a pot formula so I guess MAC decides to give the pots a rest and go with a mechanical pencil design. These are a twist up eyeliner but they d not not come with a smaller sharpener on the top the way some of the newer mechanical pencils do. I stopped using Technakohl because I hated when the fine tip would wear down and I had no way to sharpen it. Not a big issue really because you can always grab one of the smaller sharpeners you have from other mechanical pencils but for $16 bucks a pop it would have been nice to have one built into the lid.

I tried these in three shades and honestly wasn’t all that impressed. Fluidline in the pot has a gel formula with creamy formula that typically applies without tugging or skipping. In many cases, Fluidline is almost always very pigmented as well no matter what shade MAC releases it in.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the same experience with Fluidline Eye Pencils. These are disappointing. They feel very dry to me and do tug on my lash line a bit plus I feel the need to go over the line twice before I see a good, solid, even finish on my lash line. They don’t well on my waterline unfortunately as the drier texture means they don’t produce a good pigmented finish on the waterline. They do smudge easily enough and might be a hit for those with an oily lid as you might see a better glide with such a skin type. However, those with drier eyes might not appreciate the drier formula.
The colors are quite pigmented when swatches however, on the lash line you do have to go over the line for most pigmented finish.
Overall, I felt like MAC Fluidline Eye Pencils were a downgrade from the original formula. If you already like the pot version I say stick with it as the new eye pencil format isn’t all that great!
These launch on counter and online at maccosmetics.com this August.
