MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipstick Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipsticks

FranknFurter, Oblivion, Sin, and Strange Journey are four of the limited edition MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipstick shades launching for Halloween/Fall 2014.

When you think of the Rocky Horror Picture Show I’m sure any number of things pop into your head! The Time Warp, Frank getting it on with everyone from his self made muscle man to Brad our reluctant heterosexual hero, and even good girl virgin Janet, and let’s not forget the epic motorcycle riding Meatloaf as Eddie (he also played Dr. Everett Scott in the play!).

Needless to say another epic thing that stands out from the film is all the lipstick! I’m positive the vampy lip look originated from Doctor Frank n Furter’s own stunningly dark, red lips.

The MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipstick shades celebrate all good things Rocky Horror to say the least.

Do take a look!

MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipsticks Halloween 2014

I only tried two of the four MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipstick but I will be hauling the others when they launch (MAC says they’ll be available online today and on counters October 2nd).

The lipsticks come housed in a glossy black barrel and feature the Rocky Horror Picture Show lips emblem on the bottom half of the tube. The outer packaging has the same design but also features an interior black and white design featuring characters from the film.

MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Lipstick Swatches (Sin and Strange Journey)

MAC Sin Lipstick was crazy difficult for me to apply. This is most definitely a lip brush lipstick experience. It tugs like crazy during application and has a very dry, matte finish. The rich, super pigmented color coverage is impressive but the formula and texture as a complete hassle in my opinion. It’s pretty much opaque easily enough but it also drags like a b*tch which in turn makes it look patchy and dry. The color, applied correctly, will last for several hours easily. I put it on at 5:30ish and it was still going strong until 2am! If you don’t mind the drier texture this super strong of blackened burgundy will create dramatic lip looks. It does require makeup remover to get off completely. But for those with drier lips? BEWARE!

MAC Strange Journey Lipstick is probably a nod to Columbia. This isn’t red but a bright autumn orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. Unlike Sin it was very creamy and glided on easily. The color wore strong for 7 hours and left a staining effect behind after the initial fading began. It wasn’t drying on my dry lips but it didn’t provide much in the way of moisture either. The color is very strongly pigmented and will provide opaque color on a single swipe.

If you’re deciding on shades to purchase at this point I’d give Strange Journey a nice nod of approval but be careful with Sin! That’s one that I’d leave up to experts. It’s a hard formula to work with and a hard one to wear.

I’m looking forward to trying the other two MAC Rocky Horror Show Lipstick shades when they launch!

Which are on your wish list?

Or are you throwing in the hate and snagging all four?

Do you know if this collection will be sold through Nordstrom online? I missed out on the blush today and it’s sold-out through Mac. Thanks!

Gads! I love Sin! (Please do not snicker.) Actually this has been one of my favorites from MAC for years! All of the PRO shades are wicked good! So glad they launched them at counters so I can quit telling people “yes you CAN buy it, you just need to call a PRO store to get it.” I agree its a lip brush lipstick tho…

    • Isabella Muse

you are my hero….this formula is absolutely horrid. I already own it from pro and lord knows I’m happy to have it in a le rocky horror tube, call me crazy, but the formula omg the formula was made in hell! seriously!

  • Fancie

I love both of these colors! It’s too bad Sin doesn’t perform better. The swatch looks really, really dry. I don’t know if my dry lips could handle it

There is no “decide to purchase” they were sold out after a few minutes. Except FNF, that is a whole new level of stupid. Damn you MAC and there limited collections. I love RHPS but I will never ever buy a limited collection from MAC again. Not that they would care or notice it but no, I am off the bandwagon.

Strange Journey looks lovely! It’s not quite red, not quite orange, I like it 🙂

  • Marina

So glad I passed on Sin. I figured since it was perm I didn’t need it. Plus I have so many colors like it! But I got the other three and they should be here today! Lucky I took a chance on Strange Journey! Looks fab.

  • Eli Caroline

Aw! That’s such bad news about Sin because it looks so good on you.

  • Majick

I would love Strange Journey (it’s def a ME color). In fact, I’m wearing MUFE #40 today and I think it’s a good dupe? Also, NARS Heatwave is similar. I lost my NARS heatwave :-(.

I think SIN is surprisingly nice on you. It’s almost goth but not. Too bad the formula is yucky dry.

The red is just FAB on you. 🙂
    THanks for the swatches!

    • Isabella Muse

OH I love heatwave great shade. Thanks girl, not sure I like it! Looks weird 😀 my pleasure!

It’s a little gothy but not bad. I think you could work it with the right outfit. 🙂

I was lucky enough to pick up Strange Journey and Oblivion yesterday. Our MAC store in Shrewsbury had it and were kind enough to mail it to me since I couldn’t get there at lunch.

kind of wishing I would have ordered the eye shadow palette now but better that I saved some moola. KWIM?

Strange Journey looks beautiful on you! It brightens up your complexion even further and brings out that pretty blush 🙂
