Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick Review & Swatches

Maybelline Creamy Mattes Lipsticks

Yes, it’s true! Maybelline has a new creamy mattes lipstick collection for Fall 2014! The Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick by Color Sensational is a brand new launch that includes 10 shades of matte lipstick which I believe are all permanent colors. Creamy Matte Lipstick seems to be a trending at the moment as I’m seeing a variety of brands doing textures like this but Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick is ground breaking as far as drugstore formulas go as they are one of the only drugstore brands offering such a formula at the moment.

Recently, I tried and loved Butter London Lippy Moisture Matte Lipstick and I’d say that the Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick formula is quite similar in texture but the price is a heck of a lot nicer at $5.49 each (at Harmons).

Take a look!

Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipsticks

Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick is a little difficult to explain in terms of texture. It isn’t quite the matte texture we might be familiar with as it combines elements of a matte lipstick with a thick, creamy, buttery texture that glides on lips easily. The creaminess is where things get different because matte lipstick, well, sometimes it’s legendary for being a bit stiff, a bit dry, and sometimes, sure, it tugs during application. I think the Creamy Mattes formula re-imagines the traditional matte lipstick and makes it more wearable with a super soft, buttery texture that’s simply to die for.

Seriously, Maybelline hit in right out of the park with this formulation. Not only are these creamy but they have a very soft, buttery texture that doesn’t tug during application and wears very, very well without being dry or stiff on lips. I have drier lips and they glided on easily and looked smooth, even, and perfect for up to five hours (some shades wore six hours). I never felt like the finish was sucking moisture from my lips which is sometimes that often happens when I’m wearing a matte lipstick. The colors didn’t crack, migrate, or feather and they had a very, very strong wear without fading or losing intensity well after a five hour period. They feel buttery but they look velvety on lips sans shimmer, sparkle, or glitter of any kind which gives them a sophisticated look!

Of course, we should talk pigment. Out of all eight shades I purchased I’d say none of them lacked pigment. All eight provided full opaque color on a single pass and just got even more impressive when built up. Some shades do leave a slight, visible stain behind as they wear away but this doesn’t really stick around for very long. They do have a very subtle taste and fragrance which most Color Sensational Lipsticks have, it kinda reminds me of play-doh?! But it didn’t really disturb me in the least.

All in all I think Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick might just have re-invented the matte lipsticks and made it a more easy to wear formula with a dramatic finish! You likely haven’t seen the last of creamy matte lipsticks but Maybelline is the first the break ground at the drugstore with one and it’s a winner!

Maybelline Cream Matte Lipstick is launching now at drugstores.

Tried them?

I am totally lusting after Daringly Nude and Touch of Spice. Unfortunately, the display at my Target was totally picked clean with only one sad, slightly mashed, Craving Coral left over. The hunt continues…!

    • Isabella Muse

I went hunting the day before for more shades for a friend but nada! one lonely one and it was squished too 🙁

  • LipstickHoarder

YES YES AND YES! I so want these!!!! Hopefully my local Walgreens have them. Great post, Muse!

  • Ali

I am hoping to hoard at least 2 of these… I really hope I can find these in the rural midwest!! I NEED Daringly Nude!! 🙂

  • yelena

daring nude is perfection on you muse! drool! I would like to try this and the lust for blush 🙂

  • Skye

I can’t find these anywhere, not even online 🙁 I would love to get my hands on them but even Maybelline doesn’t offer them on their site. So confusing. I feel like I’m in a make up twilight zone.

    • Isabella Muse

I found them at harmons drugstore or you can check bed, bath and beyond and christmas tree stores.

      • sandra

Bed Bath and Beyond sells these???? I haven’t been in a while I guess. I actually just got back from my local Target because the website said they were in stock for all colors since yesterday but nada. They probably got a shipment but haven’t stocked the shelves yet. I wanted to to try and get them while they were fresh before people start opening them up and using/swatching them and putting them back on the shelf -_- Hate that. I was able to score the magenta color last week at least..

        • Isabella Muse

yes, if your BBB has a beauty section! 🙂 also Christmas Tree Stores 🙂 I hope you find them Sandra!

  • Cindy

Went to Bed Bath & Beyond yesterday and they had one or two of each color left. I would up buying Craving Coral, Siren In Scarlet, and Faint For Fuchsia (because I need another matte coral, red, and bright pink like I need a hole in the head). Also had two $1 coupons from the papers for any Maybeline lip product + 20% off entire purchase in BB&B so I wound up paying $3.39 for 2 of them and $4.39 for one. Can’t beat that!

Bought Butter London’s “Come To Bed Red” with my $10 Platinum Member birthday coupon from Ulta and LOVE it. Now I know I have to buy more colors of that one, haha!

      • Cindy

Haven’t tried the Maybelline ones yet but I did try the Butter London one and that was perfect!

        • Isabella Muse

fantastic! 😀 You are going to love the maybelline ones even more! they are a bit creamier 😀

  • Cindy

BTW make sure you open them and look at them to make sure they aren’t touched before you buy them. I don’t know why they aren’t sealed but there are a lot of people out there who think if a lipstick for sale isn’t covered it’s theirs to make a tester out of. NOT cool!

    • Isabella Muse

AGREED! I had to open them all when I went to the check out bc I was worried they were swatches, squished, or tested! not COOL!

  • Heidi

Intrigued. I want to see the other shades. I love the deep wine red, as it looks so rich. I hope there’s a brown-red with these. That’s what I really want to find in a matte.

  • Kalli

I picked up Touch of Spice the other day at Target and wore it yesterday. So love! So much pigment and felt so good on. I swear, Maybelline and Revlon make as good as, if not better, lip products than many high end brands! I want to get more of these, but the Target I went to was clean out!

  • Dee

My Target had the display but they it was really picked over already. Will try BBB tomorrow as Touch of Spice looks like my kind of shade. These all look great on you!

  • morgane

that wine color looks. seriously. amazing. I have been searching for something matte and deep for fall for so long and that looks perfect!!

  • Lacy

Muse it’s really not fair how lovely you look in all the shades. I’m so envious! I’ll def be grabbing daringly nude, touch of spice and divine wine… I love a good matte lippy… 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

lacy you’re good for my ego and way too kind! these are divine! I hate mattes but these are so easy to wear I think you’ll adore them as a matte lover!

  • Bianca Christine

Oh my…Touch of Spice…I think it’s calling my name!

Now…if I can only find one before they’re all gone.

  • Sarah

Just found these this past weekend at Target. I got Lust for Blush and it’s going to be part of my lipstick repertoire, but for me personally it’s not something I can’t live without.

For someone who likes mattes but is sensitive to the drying/tugging sensation of matte lipsticks, this is a great choice. It’s definitely a smooth lipstick and the feel can’t be beat. I personally don’t mind the drying sensation of matte lipsticks and love strongly matte finishes. This lipstick has a matte finish, but it still has a sort of smoothness to the finish. (I’m really not certain how to explain makeup finishes sometimes!)

The pigment is definitely there, but given the color on the display, I expected Lust for Blush to be a bit darker. The shade is much more true to the swatches on this blog than anything. Still a useful shade, just not exactly what I expected.

Loved to see the other shades and love to see other thoughts too!

    • Isabella Muse

sarah thank you SO much for your thoughts/input! very helpful to readers deciding on these 🙂

  • Angel

When you said they looked velvety, you had me sold. That is the most important thing I look for in a good matte. That velvet finish, when done right, is just magical. I need three of these, the spice, the nude and the red one. The red looks like it might pull orange on me but I’m willing to give it a shot at this price. Great review, I can’t wait to apply these.

  • Torty

Craving Coral looks especially good on you Muse – I wonder when these will hit the UK shores…

    • Isabella Muse

oh thanks torty! I’m actually surprised you guys didn’t get them first!

  • CoCoJo

Ooohhhh! I see a couple that I am definitely getting! Why is lipstick so hard to resist? How boring would life be without it!

  • Loremil

I am loving the colors. They all look great on you! Nude and lust for blush are the two shades that caught my eye. I don’t need anymore lipstick, but I feel that I must get them! 💄

  • Simone

Ouch. I need several of these. I had a butter london matte lippy in my hand at Ulta the other day, and I’m glad I put it down. I’ll be giving these a go first. Perdy.

  • elizabeth v maiorana

These all look so pretty, especially on you. Really nice looking lipsticks- leave it to Maybelline, though, right? Thanks for the post- I will probably end up getting all of them…xo Beth in Pgh :-))

  • Amara

I actually found these at my CVS which normally gets things first before the other ones in my area. I’m in LA so there are a ton. I went the day they were putting out the new shipment so I had my pick pf them. Be on the lookout people!

  • Christine

Gah! These are gorgeous! I’m loving the Touch of Spice..The wine color looks very nice on you Muse. 🙂

  • Mindy

Looks like Touch Of Spice may be a dupe for UD’s Revolution lipstick in Manic. I’ll have to swatch when I get it!

  • Monica

Looking fab Muse!! I’m so happy you switched these! I ordered these today for the drug store I work for & we get them direct from Maybelline. So far they’re permanent, like the nude colors they released. Sometimes they disappear after a few years.

  • Roxy

I went to Walmart, cvs, and walgreens and can’t find them :(. I’m in texas I wonder if they will get here soon.

  • Christina

These all look amazing on you, especially loving the vampy look! I’ll have to keep an eye out for these now that they have your approval 😄

  • becky

i’ve literally hit up ALL the stores in my surrounding area! walmart, 2 targets, rite aid, cvs, and walgreens, BB&B and NOTHING! target was the only one that actually had the display, but only had the ones that were already touched and none of the color i want. i just want one color! is that too much to ask?! :'(

  • Kelley

All the shades look smashing on you – just lovely. Having very fair skin, I have my eye on Divine Wine to create a vampy look for Fall. Thanks so much for the review!

  • wndlws

These are beautiful and classic/classy shades I had to go to three different Rite Aids to find the three shades I was looking for because they were sold out,my hunt included two Walgreen’s who did have any of the nude’s in yet. All in all very worth the hunt, the color lasts and it is not drying on my lips. Very few of the lip products I own live up to this claim and I own a lot of lip products.

  • Kelly Merta

These are BEAUTIFUL, but very hard to find but I LOVE THEM. They are so matte and creamy.

  • Kirstin

Love the post! I just ordered lust for blush and touch of spice from ulta.com. It’s a good option especially if there are other things you plan to buy!

  • Nancy

First off, thank you for your thorough review. These are the kind of reviews that determines my decision to buy or not to buy. With that said, I’M BUYING!!! Hopefully, I will find them at c.v.s. or Walgreen. I know how quickly new make up lines sell out at the beginning. Can’t wait. Again, thank you.
    Nancy

    • Isabella Muse

aw my pleasure nancy glad it helped you good luck finding and update me when you try 🙂

  • Yelitza

HIII MUSE! I have been wearing touch of spice and its such a perfect shade! it is also a color that works on a variety of skin tones, I wore it yesterday with a moss green smokey eye. the color just scream: Fall, here I come! yay!

  • DamiensMom

God bless you for sharing these swatches. I googled the shades and wanted to see how they looked so you helped me out big time! I love matte lipstick and my first place to buy is MAC but being a mom $15 lipstick is too expensive. I wanted the Maybelline creamy matte lipstick as soon as I saw the commercial and now that I’ve seen the shades in action I want them even more. I just hope they’re in store when I go get them!

    • Isabella Muse

oh my pleasure Damiensmom I’m glad it helped you! I hope you find them! 🙂

  • Bonnie S.

In Canada we have a colour not mentioned here, Ravishing Rose, which is a candy pink that is surprisingly wearable. I also bought Touch of Spice, it’s amazing how different it looks on me than on you – that’s the beauty of makeup though – it’s all very personal.

  • Pauline

Lovely swatches! I think I’ll be going for Craving Coral, it’s a lovely shade.

  • Bi

Would you say shade divine wine a perfect dupe for Limecrime velvetines? I really need to know…either this or Menow generation II lipgloss. but I know nothing of menow except it might contain lead(?), and maybelline is much safer choice. Please let me know..and thank you!

  • Seema

Um, I have a real problem with you and your reviews. Why is it, that every shade of lipstick you tried on looks frikkin amazing on you?! Not fair.

    • Isabella Muse

YOU ARE too kind Seema 🙂 <3! thank you! I love you for that!
