Clairol Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo

The new Clairol Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo is a silicone free, mineral oil free, and paraben free clarifying formula infused with Strawberry and Ginger Fragrance! This is a clarifying formula that deep cleanses hair and removes build up.

I’m actually very excited about the new Clairol Hair Food Shampoo and Conditioners as it’s difficult to find haircare that’s silicone free outside of Lush!

Let’s take a look!

Clairol Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo is one of three different haircare collections available at Target and Target.com at the moment. Clairol Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo is the only clarifying shampoo in the launch and considering I’ve been using SO much Carol’s Daughter lately I really needed something to detox my hair and this sounded appealing!

This is a thick gel consistency that has a beautiful strawberry and ginger fragrance. The fragrance is incredible! The ginger adds depth to the strawberry and gives it a nice warmth! It’s a full on strawberry fragrance for sure but the ginger gives it a nice subtle warmth.

This doesn’t create a ton of lather but there is some foam. It doesn’t feel like a silicone-free formula but still has the thicker gel consistency of a regularly formulated shampoo which I like. It rinses clean away easily and it leaves my hair not only smelling incredible but super, duper squeaky clean. I used it twice a week for the last month (you don’t need to use it that regularly, once a week is fine!) and it did an amazing job removing buildup left over from WEN and Carol’s Daughter. It rinses silicons from my hair and leaves it feeling very, very clean. And thankfully not like straw! I didn’t experience any drying with this and felt it was quite gentle on my drier hair without over stripping. Lush is great but some of their shampoos can leave my hair quite dry but Clairol’s formula seems to agree with my hair. Keep in mind after you wash away much of the buildup in your hair you’ll find your hair feels lighter and kinda “wispy” which can make it a chore to style at times. But personally, I don’t mind in the least as sometimes you just really need to detox your hair and scalp and this formula does an excellent job of it.

If you’re shampoo, conditioner, and styling products are leaving mega build up in your hair I highly suggest Clairol Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo! This is a great clarifying formula shampoo that will leave your hair super clean.

It’s available now at Target and Target.com.

silicone free, mineral oil free, and paraben free but has sulfates? i’ll pass.

    • Sammy

Lindsey, I agree, no sulfates. Yuck. Plus Clairol (P&G) still does animal testing 🙁

difficult to find silicone free hair care besides lush?

Here are some great silicone free brands:
    -briogeo
    -devacurl
    -sheamoisture
    -nubian heritage
    -jessicurl
    -raw curls
    -living proof
    -curly hair solutions

    …there’s more of course 🙂

I’ve been seeing popup ads for this, so I was excited to see your review.

And then sad because it’s got a lot of sulfates in it. My head would weep if I tried this. Bummed. 🙁

Have you found one that’s free of: Sodium Laurel Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate?

I’m highly allergic to these and they are extremely harmful and in almost everything from shampoo’s to makeup removers and food.

I’d like to find a shampoo that’s free of SLS

  • Kiss & Make-up

This sounds great! I need a good clarifying shampoo, especially for right before I color my hair.

  • Ame

Ohh awesome! I don’t like sulfate free since it doesn’t get my hair or scalp clean and damages my color like nothing else. This sounds like a winner for pre-color prep.

I was sent a free sample of the hair mask in my influenster box. It is full size and smells amazing, it actually makes my hair really soft. I want to try the clarifying shampoo but I may pass because apple cider vinegar works so well

I am dying to try this 😀
saw it at target last night but held back. any curly hair girls tried this? my hair is already dry so I’m scared to do anything else to it right now.

p.s. what’s this influenster box everyone keeps talking about?

  • Ashley

Yessss! I am so glad I found this review! My hair gets so unmanageable between salon Malibu treatments so I’m always on the lookout for a great shampoo in between treatments! Thank you!

Just bought and used. i had nasty oil build up in my crown area. Def made a huge difference!!! Will continue to use 1-2 xs a week! I have fine thin log brown hair but get these weird build ups a few times a year. i am so happy and way more affordable then nioxin that i used to use.

Hi I love this product and totally agree with your review. Maybe I shouldn’t but I do use it every day on my color treated hair- my hair looks and feels super. My color holds very nicely. I do have it professionally colored every 6 weeks. I like the Target Price and hope I’ll start seeing it at other stores that I shop at more frequently than Target.

  • Rusty

I actually prefer sulfates so this looks good to me. Thanks for posting the review, I’m planning on checking this line out.

  • Jessica

My hair has always held onto everything i put in it so getting rid of build up has always been difficult, but this brand is a life changer. I’m finally down to washing my hair once a week since there’s very little build up or an abundant amount of oil

I used the Clarifying shampoo today for the first time. I recently moved into a new apartment. I was surprised with one no water pressure, and the salt and soap they used in the water soap definitely did not help the situation. Needless to say, when I showered my conditioner did not come of my hair! I bought the Clarifying shampoo hoping to remove the buildup, which it did but not fully. Just a little bit disappointing. I may have to try the Big shampoo by Lush.

The Alberto Vo5 Kiwi Lime and Vanilla Mint Tea clarifying shampoos work really well for their $1 price, if anyone is looking for a cheaper option.

These will definitely strip your color and are probably full of sulfates, etc., but they are super clarifying. I only use them every so often and haven’t had any problems with them damaging my hair.
