Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick Review & Swatches

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick is a new lipstick formula that launched along with a new HD Lacquer Lipgloss for Fall/Winter 2014. The new Ultra HD Lipstick is available in 14 shades and will be apart of the Revlon permanent lipstick collection.

Unfortunately not a lot is known about the formula as the display really doesn’t reveal much and HD in the beauty world pretty much means “flawless” but when it comes to lipstick what exactly does it reference? I’m just assuming smooth color with an even, smooth finish?

None the less I was curious about the new Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick and I’m relieved to say…

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick Fall 2014

I only purchased three. Typically I’ll go all in on a purchase and grab a few shades but I’m happy I only got three shades as I’m not terribly impressed with this formula.

The Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick comes housed in a simple silver mirrored barrel with a clear case. I’ve heard a lot of rants about the packaging since posting a picture and brief intro to the lipstick yesterday across social media and here on Musings of a Muse. Personally I don’t mind it. It’s simple and I like the clear lid so I can see the actual color inside. My main beef isn’t only with the formula here but also the fact that the lipstick does not swivel completely down so as of last week and into this week I have officially sliced off chunks of lipstick with each and every single use. Grrrrr! Why!??!!? Lipstick should always swivel completely DOWN! These leave a little tip of lipstick that doesn’t completely swivel down so each time I place the cap on I end up taking a chunk of lipstick with it.

The formula is quite creamy, almost slick with a slight sheen finish. I have no rants about the texture. It feels like although a little itty bitty silicone-y on the set but nothing to bothersome. Pigment is also great as all the shades I tried had fairly opaque color on a single swipe. Unfortunately, these have a very unnatural way of sitting a top lips and proceeding to settle into my natural lip lines making them appear uneven, patchy, and dare I say less than smooth. I really disliked the way they looked on my lips after the initial application and worst still as the wear progressed. So much for HD quality finish eh? I think the flavor and fragrance will bother a lot of people as well. I’m not sensitive and I don’t mind flavored gloss or lipstick but these have a cherry cough syrup flavor that wasn’t terribly pleasant to my mouth.

Between faulty packaging, a mediocre formula, and a less than tasty flavor I wasn’t terribly impressed with the new Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick formula. They may end up working for you so I wouldn’t completely write them off but personally I just thought they settled on my lips in a really unnatural and unflattering way!

No like!

The Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick is launching now at drugstores.

Love the first shade on you. Very glam, and holiday. Love the way you styled your
    outfit, you look great!

  • Tammie

Yeah the packaging (specifically how it doesn’t swivel all the way down) is the huge turnoff for me. Revlon doesn’t usually do that so I wonder why they started now. It’s annoying and always looks cheap when they do that, I don’t get it…

  • JoElla

    “cherry cough syrup flavor:

I’m out! *gags* now I am having bad flashbacks of cherry triaminic…..

I am really surprised by this. Revlon usually has wonderful lipsticks. WTH happened?

  • Kate

I think you may have saved me some money.
Saw these on another blog and thought I would take a look

    Meh

  • Brian

I am guessing they didn’t make the color swivel all the way down so people can see the color before buying it but I find that I ALWAYS knick the lipstick when it doesn’t swivel to the bottom. I want to try the Rose shade and one of the lacquer glosses just to test the formula but I do agree that the color does seem to just sit on top of the lips, instead of blending in and looking smooth and buttery like the Colorburst lip butters.

    • Isabella Muse

I can appreciate the clear packaging and I think you can still see the color with it swiveled all the way down…but having it stop at that point really makes for a pain as I sliced off every single shade I purchased grrr! agreed, colorburst are so much nicer!

  • Kayla

Ugh, the packaging is just like the Wet n’ Wild lipsticks! Hate that! It makes the clear case (the actual useful part) look so ugly and dirty after taking so many chunks of lipstick with it!

I’m not really a huge fan of Revlon to begin with so I guess I’ll pass on these. I love their Just Bitten Kissable balm stains and matte stains though! <3

  • Angel

Ok, that is a major pet peeve of mine – lipstick that doesn’t swivel into the tube. Forget it, just forget it. Between this and those terrible looking brushes on the HD lip lacquer, I say no effin way Revlon. Thank you for saving me some money Muse!

  • kellly

Listen up, Revlon! We’re all ranting about your lipsticks that don’t retract completely into the case!
I have an issue with that, too. No matter how carefully I try to replace the top, I always manage to nick the product and make a mess of the case. It shouldn’t be tricky just to put the lid back on! And while I’m on a tear here, I hate the Revlon regular lipstick cases where they’re dark opaque cases with a little window on the top of the lid where you’re supposed to be able to see the color down in there in the shadow of the case. I haven’t tried using a flashlight in the store but maybe that would help. I’d be happier with a totally transparent or translucent case where I could really see the color I’m getting, if that’s their objective — especially since most of the displays don’t have testers any more!
Ok, thanks for letting me rant. I’m over it now.
I like that rose color and might just give it a try even with the less than stellar review. . . . Revlon roses have always been good colors on me.

  • majick

at first shot these do look really pretty but I have the same peeves as everyone else.

  • mirandagrosvenor

Revlon needs to just STOP with having 4 zillion different kinds of lipstick and stick to the classic Super Lustrous and Moon Drops in every shade under the sun. These look like some that they put out a couple years ago (I can’t even remember the name) and I was like why??? The only ones that have made a dent are ColorStay and the Lip Butters and I hate the Lip Butters.

  • Lorna

Poinsettia looks very nice on you! It kind of makes your eyes look brighter!

  • Wendy

I picked up two of these over the weekend, wish I had read this first LOL

The scent and fragrance are icky!!

  • SusanW

The colors look lovely on you. I really love this lipstick. It reminds me of UD Revolution, same silicony silkiness, high pigmentation, etc, but the Revlon has better colors and a better price.
Now, the packaging is just bad. I lost a chunk of the top of one of mine too.

I’m going to get more colors…specifically the poinsettia and hydrangea. The smell is very faint to me, btw. The only fault I’ve found beside the packaging is the silkiness may be a bit much for some, but I think these are worth your time and trying out.

    • Isabella Muse

thanks susan! I’m glad you like them!!!!!!!!! Yeah the packaging totally drove me nuts!

  • Mary

I agree about the packaging. I have to be super careful, lest I accidentally nick the lipstick on the side of the tube. Also, while the color (Dahlia) looked really intense, it’s really more of a sheer formula. Also, the color disappears rather quickly. I don’t mind the fruity taste/smell though. I’m rather disappointed with this lipstick.

  • Sarah

These *just* showed up in my area and I picked a few up. I seem to be the odd man out because I LOVE them. I was a little skeptical because I had tried their classic lipsticks a few years ago and found them to be horrid. I avoid them like the plague now. They were heavy on the lips, tasted awful and smelled bad. I really like the light weight texture of these and I think they smell like vanilla. I don’t really taste anything when they are on my lips. I think these are better suited for people who prefer sheerer coverage. I avoided Lipstick (and still kinda do) all through my teenage years and early 20’s (I was forced to use gloss exclusively) because I just couldn’t find anything that was not opaque and frosty (Hate, hate, hate frosty). I am loving the current matte and translucent trends and really hope Revlon keeps this formula. I could see myself becoming a daily wearer of this. Hopefully they may rethink the case a bit, I don’t have problems, but it really is a bad design.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m glad to hear you like Sarah 😀 I agree about the case, it drives me nuts I can’t swivel the lipstick all the way down!

  • Jenn

I had a terrible allergic reaction to this brand. It’s the first time a lipstick has given me a reaction (also first time using Revlon). I’m sure it’s something in the fragrance/taste. Anyway, I’ve heard that an allergy to HD Revlon is not uncommon. Just a heads up.

  • Sam B

I only have one of these, and like everyone else, I HATE the packaging. The color is really pretty, though. I have hydrangea… which is a hot pink that leans slightly toward coral. The only way I can really make it wear well, though, is by patting it onto my lips with my finger. Otherwise, it just sits on top of my lips and looks really unflattering. I probably won’t be buying any more of these.

  • Kate

I purchased shade 870 today and will discard the entire lipstick because of the sickly taste and gritty feel. It is the worst lipstick I have ever used.

  • Melina

I must say I LOVE these lipsticks, their formula, silkiness, longevity, shades and the lovely scent (taste)! It’s like tasting caramel/fudge, how can anyone not like it?! ;D

The packaging maybe not so much, i.e. that the lipstick doesn’t wind all the way down, but that’s what I consider a minor flaw 😉

  • Cherry

I love this line of revlon. The packaging may be a turn off but their formula definitely works for me. I only use clinique for my lips but when I tried this one, its perfect! Doesnt dry my lips and lasts long too. The smell is kinda strong – but the sales person said it was a mango cream scent, so I changed my perspective on it. Haha I have the rose, orchid and ponseitta shades. I love their darker shades; I only need to swipe it ones or twice.

  • Courtney

I just purchased 2 shades today, Primrose and Rose. I only tried them on briefly but loved both of them! I actually enjoyed the slight flavor and thought they were very flattering. I wonder if the formula has changed at all since they were released so long ago. I will say the package is still as poor as it was when they were originally released.

  • Claudette

I tried one as well and I agree with you re the patchy colour .. i bought an orangey colour which looks pretty nice and summery in the tube but when you put it on your lips it does not give an even colour thus making it look like you applied lipstick when drunk !!

  • Silvia

I just purchased 6 of these today! They have a range of colors at Big Lots for $2.00 so I went crazy and got a bunch. The colors are all beautiful I hope they turn out ok. They also have a few Max Factor, the Kerry Perry Kitty colored one and LA Girl. For that price I have the rainbow. I did like one I previously bought at Target they are smooth and a beautiful shade.
