Makeup Packaging I Love!

Jill Stuart Valentine's Day Collection Heart Gloss Trio 3

I realize I’ve spent a good deal of my makeup life placing a ton of importance on packaging. It’s what makes beauty and makeup so very appealing to me. Don’t get me wrong you can slap a shimmer eyeshadow in a basic black pot and I’d be drawn to it like a magnet! But just the opposite holds true of say a boring matte! Place an uneventful muddy matte shade in gorgeous packaging and I instantly need to have it.

Perhaps I’m a bit of a magpie. Collecting useless makeup just because it has pretty packaging! Of course, that’s not always the case. Sometimes we really get lucky and not only get a lipstick with a gorgeous formula but also one that comes in stunning packaging.

As I grow older I find myself becoming more jaded and I’m not necessarily all “grabby hands” with makeup just because it has beautiful packaging. Let’s face it Milani Cosmetics has some of the worst packaging around but some of the very nicest makeup, hello have you tried their blush? Awful packaging, great formula!

Now the makeup packaging is divine but sometimes there’s a hit or miss situation with my favorite brand Jill Stuart. Jill Stuart sold their makeup in Japan for a very long time exclusively and moved out to Singapore, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia a few years after the Japan launch. More recently it’s become available at their flagship store right here in New York. I play with and own a lot of different Asian brands particularly Korean and Japanese ones but by far the best packaging I’ve come across is from Jill Stuart. It’s just such pretty, princess-y packaging.

Now that’s not to say every single makeup piece I own from the brand has equally awesome formulas because lord knows I’ve run into one or two items I’ve hated over the year…but the packaging, ah the packaging is divine.

I’m all about the formula. I’m too practical for my own good. I’m drawn to beautiful packaging but if I test the product and it stinks the magic is gone. God I sound boring.

For me, I place more importance on formula and performance than actual packaging, but if the packaging is pretty too, then that makes it so much harder to resist. Wow, the packaging on the Jill Stuart is so pretty and unique! After you use up the product, I hope you can refill or re-use the packaging for something else, but if not, it’ll still look pretty on the vanity

I love packaging that feels luxurious and retro. And i’m completely obsessed with weird textures, so the product above called Jelly Eye Color withe pretty lid is right up my alley!

More pr0n! 🙂 I LOVE it. So dang pretty. Yes, I’ve absolutely bought makeup simply for the packaging. When Anna Sui first launched I ran to her store in West Hollywood to snatch it up. I still have empty eyeshadow pans, the powder box and the rose lipstick rings. I realize some makeup is priced higher simply because of the packaging, and I’m ok with that. There are some that I think could use a huge overhaul, and I’d probably be tempted to buy more from said brands if they didn’t have granny packaging lol. Thanks for sharing these pics Muse!

    • Isabella Muse

oh don’t get me started on anna sui! I swear I’ve purchased stuff I NEVER used just because I wanted to display it on my vanity Angel 😀 haha! Aw my pleasure!

I once bought a fold-out makeup palette from a company called Pupa (I think) because it was in the shape of a mouse! Never once used the makeup inside. There’ve been a few MAC releases I’ve bought just for the packaging (alluring aquatic). I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’m starting to sound like I’m at a makeup anonymous meeting…lol!

        • Isabella Muse

HAHAHA you aren’t alone I have many many many pupa palettes that I brought in Italy and also from Korea. I have an Angel one, a Devil one, oh god too many and never used them 😀 LOL! hoarders are we!

          • Angel

Aw man, I was SOOO late to the Pupa game. They have made some of the cutest stuff I’ve ever seen. Muse, maybe someday you can show us all your Pupa stuff so we can drool lol!

          • Isabella Muse

haha will do, will do but no making fun of me k?

          • Angel

Never! I would never make fun of a fellow makeup h0r lol!

          • chibicheeks

I have the devil and angel one too! I was passing by a store in Italy and they had them in a window display. I totally ditched the person I was with and ran in to get them. I ended up having to walk back to the hotel by myself because they had no idea where I had went and left me!

I am definitely a packaging junkie. I’m not talking about the box that something is packed in, I’m talking the actual container of that something. Like Lancome containers. For years I had to buy their moisturizers just because I loved the look of those white pots with the gold rose! Had to have them, just had to! But with my oily skin, I really had no use for the creams inside!! Recently Lancome has changed their look thank goodness so I’m no longer attracted to pricey items I don’t need but desperately want on my bathroom counter. So I totally appreciate your commentary on packaging – hits home with me!!

    • Isabella Muse

haha bonnie I can totally relate. I’ll totally buy perfume and hate the fragrance but just love the bottle!

  • kimkats

See, to me the Jill Stuart packaging is overdone. It’s waaaay too fussy and serves no purpose. I guess I like the look of pretty packaging, but pretty is as pretty does. I don’t leave my makeup sit out, so I don’t really care if the container is gorgeous. I just want the stuff to do what it’s supposed to do. 🙂

    Iz very basic, I gues… 🙂

  • Dee

The Jill Stuart packaging is gorgeous, and some of it is just downright old time glamour. I can just picture it on my vanity! I go both ways. Sometimes I look at something and think I just have to have it based on the look. And there are some products that look like they will fall apart as soon as they are opened. I pass on those. I want the product to work in the end, and if the container rocks that’s a bonus.

  • Pash

Lime Crime has great packaging, but their products are overpriced and meh and their customer service is terrible.

I get excited when UD has nice packaging, because it’s not always great. I love the Vice 3 palette though, and my old Mariposa palette.

  • Rachel R.

I’m mostly concerned with formula, color and price. Pretty packaging is just icing on the cake. I don’t buy makeup only for the packaging (can’t afford it, no matter how tempting it can be).

  • mirandagrosvenor

I need excuses to NOT buy more makeup, so unpretty packaging is as good as any. LOL. The “winner” in this group is hands down Almay. So very, very, very fug. You can be minimalist and still be attractive(see: Neutrogena).

  • Tanya

For me I love a good balance of cute/pretty packaging and a good quality product too. That’s probably why the Too Faced Chocolate Bar eyeshadow palette is my most favorite makeup item ever. And yes, I have overlooked some good items because the package bored me so much. I like to feel inspired when I look at my make up, not like it’s just another chore.

  • Pamela

Oh my gosh, we are so alike! I have a beautiful sea blue cut glass piece of art on my sink in the bathroom. It’s made to look like sea waves.

I only put the best packaged items on it. A couple of items I dont’ even use but they are go pretty!

Now you have me wanting the ones you are showing. You are costing me money, missy!

    • Isabella Muse

sounds beautiful! you should take a pic and share Pamela 😀 haha sorry! I cost myself $$!

  • Tracy

I also fell for the packaging of Jill Stuart when I went to HK ! Had to get some stuff. but hell it is expensive ! Especially in the very competitive Asian market.

  • Sara

I’m consistently drawn to Too Faced & Benefit simply because I like the pretty packaging lol
