Gather round dry skin girls you need the new Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer ($32) which is a water based facial primer that was introduced for Spring 2015 to the permanent Kat Von D Sephora Makeup Collection.

Take a look!

One thing I’ve learned in my beauty life is that if my skin is dry my makeup looks like hell and goes to hell! I need to make sure I’m super hydrated, I’m talking so moist that I glide when I walk. A hydrating facial primer is one of the key steps to ensure my makeup not only applies easily but also looks fresh without clinging to my drier areas.

That’s why products like Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer are pretty incredible.

If you’re looking for something to reduce the appearance of pores or something to mattify your skin, well, this isn’t a good pick for you. However, if your dry, thirsty skin needs more moisture, this is in fact a product for you!

Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer comes housed in the same round container as the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation. It also has a new little plug which can be placed over the spout to prevent the primer from hardening up inside the container. I haven’t purchased Lock It Foundation in a while and they may already include this little cover with it! I sure hope so because the foundation is prone to blocking the spout as it hardens up.

Apparently it’s formulated with polymers that provide a protective barrier on the skin to prevent foundation settling into fine lines and pores but I honestly feel like that’s impossible due to the texture of the product. This formula is water based with a very light, runny texture that absorbs easily into skin but doesn’t really have the ability to blur or even fill larger pores. Lucky enough, I don’t really have visible pores so I’m perfectly fine with what this does do and that would be provide plenty of moisture.

The formula contains a host of great ingredients like B5, aloe vera, jojoba, and even shea. It’s the type of product that provides moisture and just keeps on giving because my skin feels pleasantly moist throughout the day without being shiny, greasy, or dewy. When my skin is moist, my foundation is happy. This ensures my blush, my foundation, and anything else I might be wearing on my face isn’t sticking or clinging to drier areas. It gives my skin a smooth, well hydrated surface for my makeup to cling to.

The texture is fabulous as it’s the type of product that absorbs super easily and feels virtually weightless on skin. For me, it quite reminds me of a translucent slightly thicker version of Make Up For Ever HD Elixir. I didn’t really notice a fragrance with this, perhaps something very light and subtle in the background?! But I think I’m imagining that!

If you wear and love Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation you realize how thick and creamy it is. This is actually a great product for sheering that Lock-It Foundation out. A pump of this and a pump of the foundation gives you a nice, hydrating texture. I wouldn’t say it extended my foundation wear but it did provide long lasting moisture that made my foundation and blush look better through the wear. If I didn’t know better I would think it contained hyaluronic acid as it has some great lasting moisture effect.

Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer is an excellent facial primer for those with drier skin! This one is nice for providing long lasting moisture, providing a smooth, hydrated surface for makeup, and allows makeup to wear fresher for longer.

It’s available now at Sephora and Sephora.com.

I’m surprised this works well with the Kat von D foundation, because this is water based and the foundation is silicone based isn’t it?
Either way, I’ll check this out because my dry skin needs some hydration..

I have this and my nose and mouth area love it! I wonder if it would be wise to mix primers, like maybe put a silicone one where needed and this one elsewhere?

I’m actually trying out this primer now but with the Smashbox photo finish foundation primer which I put in my t-zone (because I have combo skin). I honestly think this is the nicest primer I’ve used (I refuse to buy Hourglass), it leaves the skin supple and my foundation applied like a dream.

I sampled this the other day at Sephora and it was so lovely! Unfortunately my skin doesn’t play well with cetyl alcohol so it was a no-go for me 🙁 Great review as always, Muse!

Thanks for the review! This definitely sounds interesting, might get a sample at Sephora and see how it goes. My face can get really dry in cold weather

Muse, I have super dry skin and I’m looking for a perfecting but hydrating primer – do you have any recommendations besides this one?

    • Isabella Muse

hi jane typically moisturizing primers aren’t really perfecting in my experience. You kinda have to give up one benefit for the other so it’s either perfecting OR moisturizing but never really both! The new Wet n Wild Primer I recently reviewed might be a good pick, it’s thicker, hydrating, and it does blur minor imperfections.

Muse and Jane, have you tried Missha M Signature Radiance Pore Primer? It makes my skin look smooth and blurs pores, and I feel it’s hydrating (my skin is normal to dry generally) as well as creating a beautiful velvet finish to my skin. Just a thought if you haven’t found a perfect primer yet. <3

thanks nicole! I haven’t! Gotta check it out 😀

    Muse,
Thanks for this review! I am struggling with my skin care in general and many primers break me out. I love the MAC primer, but for whatever reason I suddenly can’t use it as it seems to be making my dry skin worse. I am gonna try this one and the WnW. Do you have any good suggestions for serums and lotions for dry sensitive skin? Thanks for being awesome! This is my favorite blog hands down!!

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t really have sensitive issues so I don’t really have any recs Brooke. typically I’m dry but not sensitive. You might want to use curel for a few days, that always seems to be very hydrating but gently on my skin when it’s extra dry! https://www.musingsofamuse.com/2014/11/curing-patchy-dry-facial-skin.html perhaps try it a few days and drop everything else from your regime? aw thank you! that means the world to me!!!!!!!

I have very dry skin so this seems to be a good pick. But does it help make your foundation last longer? I’ve never used a primer before. My problems are that my nose gets really flakey and dry. And my foundation wears off half way through the day.
