Does Your Favorite Fragrance Simply Not Last On You?

y u

Ugh it’s like the kiss of death when you love a fragrance but it simply doesn’t work with your body chemistry and your skin proceeds to suck up all that delightful scent. I replenished my stock of Diptyque Oyédo on Friday night because I was in need of some SERIOUS retail therapy and I couldn’t help but think to myself how I wish they’d put out a parfum formulation because the EDT simply doesn’t cut it for me.

Does your favorite fragrance not last on you?

Oyédo is a tangy blend of lemon and orange with a mix of green notes but for me it’s all about Pez! It just smells like Pez candy to me and on my skin it goes very sweet. Lime, orange, lemon, and a certain sweetness plays with the notes on Oyédo and creates a very pretty fragrance. My body chemistry just doesn’t love it but I get a lot of compliments when I wear it but typically that’s within the first hour of misting because after an hour it is gone.

If you’re dishing out $125 for a fragrance you want it to last a hell of a lot longer than 60 minutes (hell sometimes it’s gone within 30 minutes).

None the less Oyédo remains one of my top Diptyque fragrances and I continue to buy it! It’s just a shame my body chemistry fails to work with it.

There are any number of fragrances I love but don’t last on me! It’s such sadness when you really love a blend but it fades into the great abyss soon after after application.

What are some of your favorite fragrances that simply do not last or work with your body chemistry?

Do share them!

It’s discontinued but it’s still my favorite of all time: Michael Kors Very Hollywood. It smells like LA nights and I love it but I barely lasts an hour! It breaks my heart.

  • Ashley

I have around 30 bottles of perfume. Some last better than others. They say after getting out of the shower put non scented lotion on, and then put Vaseline on your pulse points, spray the perfume on the pulse points but do not dab your risks together as it kills the top notes.. to help with the staying power.
I’ve found that Chanel 5 has the best staying power of any perfume I’ve ever tried, and Coco mademoiselle. These fragrances must be of quality, because I can still smell them on my skin after a long work day.

    • Isabella Muse

thanks for the tips! the vaseline I’ve never tried! I think coco mademoiselle lasts the longest on me as well!

    • Heather F.

Coco Mlle really does have amazing longevity–I once applied it in my living room and could smell it for the next WEEK. No lie. (In the room, not on my skin. I do shower occasionally. 😉 )

    • Aranxta

I’ve found Cetaphil moisturizing creme under weak scents helps them to last longer. Oddly enough, spraying my hair with a weak scent makes it last longer… I have weird hair.

  • Georgie

My all time favourite is Balenciaga Paris by Balenciaga but, yeah, the lasting power is less than impressive. Same goes for Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber 🙁

  • Justin

So with me Diptyque Eu Duelle EDP lasts a decent amount of time on me but other niche lines do not. I just bought 2 Byredo perfumes and they may last couple hours and kilian.and kurkdjian last all day for me. I do know that Eco companies like lush and TBS their perfumes don’t last at all.
Reading the comments the one Chanel I like Platinum egoiste lasts forever on me. Must be whatever they do with theirs

    • Isabella Muse

Duelle lasts long on me as well! Could be because the notes are deeper, richer, warmer. most of Kilian lasts very well on me too! TBS no, never. Sometimes I get LUCKY with TBS but it is rare. And Lush, we discussed it, they changed their formulas, they simply aren’t cutting it for me either lately 🙁 I prefer indie over niche lately. many indie brands are doing very well at creating unique and powerful blends! Niche, I dunno, lately it’s been downhill! Even my beloved annick goutal hasn’t been cutting it. Replenished Rose Absolue from Paris with a bottle I purchased here in the US and for some reason it isn’t as strong..I get like 90 mins wear and it disappears.

  • LA

i love See by Chloe but it doesn’t last on me 🙁 i only have the rollerball, i’m reluctant to buy the full size because i can’t get the scent to linger!

a while back i got a full-size lola by marc jacobs as a gift and although i don’t love it, it does last and last. i don’t own daisy but i can always tell when someone’s got it on – the marc jacobs ones seem to have a great staying power.

  • Chelsea

My favorites aren’t long lasting likely due to the types of fragrances I’m drawn to – light floral eau de toilettes. My perennial favorite, Chanel Chance Eau Tendre, is too light and citrusy to last long, so I really only wear during the half of the year that’s not cold here in Michigan. I’m currently using Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet and it has better lasting power.

  • Karen

Gucci Guilty & Flower Bomb. For some reason neither of them had any lasting power on my skin. I ended up giving away FB & selling Gucci at a garage sale for a whopping $10. 🙁 Pretty much any EDT has no staying power on me.

    • Isabella Muse

flower bomb? sthu! really? Flower bomb is crazy on me. A little squirt is enough to get me through a week haha! shocked to hear it Karen!

        • Isabella Muse

haha you got worst chem than me 🙂 seriously flower bomb is crazy strong! damn girl 🙂

  • Lisa

I feel like almost no perfume lasts on me, but I wonder how much of that is just me going nose-blind to it. I was wearing Banana Republic Rosewood the other day, and couldn’t smell it at all, but then a random girl on the sidewalk asked me what perfume I was wearing. And she wasn’t even standing that close to me.

    • Isabella Muse

I get that too sometimes! It’s like, “HA!? I can’t smell anything!” but someone will randomly tell me how great I smell and what is it I’m wearing. Go figure.

  • Sacre

What worked for me is applying perfume behind ears almost on hair area xD and same on neck. That way I get sillage from all perfumes I got.

  • Kimmyyy

I actually ended up hunting down a rollerball of Charlotte Ronson perfume oil after I read a review you did on it, but unfortunately, no matter how much I slather on myself, it’s gone within the first hour or so. I figured with it being an oil that it would stick around, but nope 🙁 kills me!! I also love Juicy Couture Gold Couture (smells like yummy vanilla!) but it tends to fade within like 2 hours, sometimes 3 if I’m super lucky. Maybe that’s why I’ve stuck with the same perfume (Ralph by Ralph Lauren and occasionally, for nights, Lucky You) since like 5th grade! I just want something beachy, damnit!!

    • Isabella Muse

oh no sorry Kimmy 🙁 what about Jennifer Anniston’s beach scent? or Bobbi Brown’s which seems to have super linger!

      • Kimmyyy

I know, it’s such a bummer because that perfume oil smells divine! I’ve never tried either of those, so I’ll have to hunt them down! I’m all for anything vanilla, beachy or citrus. Thank you for the ideas! I love these perfume posts, even though I have no idea how to tell if I’ll like a fragrance by reading most of the descriptions, lol! Most of it is nonsense to me because I’ll think something in it smells good, then I’ll get to sample it and hate it! That’s happened to so many that I thought I would fall in love with! Oh well, on to the next one 🙂 By the way, a perfume that smells like Pez sounds freaking amazing!!!!! Probably my favorite candy ever, mmmmm.

        • Isabella Muse

oh my pleasure. have you tried Stila Creme Bouquet? Amazing foody vanilla 🙂 lovely and long wearing 🙂 I KNOW! I hate reviewing fragrances sometimes because how do you give people an idea of how it smells in words?! 😀 I wish we had scratch and sniff monitors! hahahahah mine too!!!!! This smells exactly like pez! but damn it wears short!

          • Kimmyyy

Totally forgot to reply to this. I actually haven’t smelled any of Stilas fragrances, which is funny because I hear good stuff about them! And you do a great job at describing them, I’m just not fragrance smert enough to figure out what any of it means, lol!! One day, we will have that, and it will make shopping for perfume sooooo much easier… By the way, have you ever tried Philosophy’s Sea of Love perfume? It sounded beachy so I was curious! Then again, I did see several of y’all saying their fragrances done last, so I’m thinking I need to search for JA’s beach fragrance and the Bobby Brown one… I wonder if I can find either of those in store around here, hmmmmm.

          • Isabella Muse

ha thanks kimmmyyy I always feel like I stink at describing fragrances 😀 yeah scratch and sniff monitors ASAP please! 😀 I don’t really LOVE philosophy fragrances so haven’t checked out sea of love yet! 😀

  • Heather F.

For me, Maison Martin Margiela Replica Beach Walk has been the most disappointing–it lasts maybe an hour on my skin before vanishing completely. (Not even a hint of base notes left!) At $125/bottle, that’s not cool.

  • Michou

This is why I tend to buy perfume oils so that it sort of… melts into my skin and lasts at least half the day. Most sprays both dry me out AND don’t last nearly as long. 🙁

If you were to spray your clothes (or use it as a linen spray), you would be able to at least enjoy it more and it would last longer. Is there a chance that you DO still have the smell but cannot smell it yourself anymore? I had an old coworker that would DROWN herself in perfume and when confronted about it, she said “oh, I’ve been wearing it for years… maybe I just got so used to the smell.” I had never considered that but I get told how awesome a perfume smells by other people long after I can’t smell it anymore.

  • Rachel

ugh, yes, CK Shock is one of my faves, but it’s gone in an hour, if that. I can’t stand really heavy, strong scents, so the ones I really like never seem to stick around!! 🙁

  • Alexis

Chanel’s fragerence chance doesn’t last on me at all. Maybe for like an hour but that’s it. I bought the matching lotion and put that on before I apply the fragerence like the lady at the counter said but that doesn’t work for me.

  • terry lam

I love anything sweet vanilla scent. But the sugar cream by Philosophy perfume is not long wearing at all. I think all their perfume doesnt last, even though most of it smells great. I get great long wear with every other ones out there.

  • Lauren

This is why I will not buy fragrance without a take home sample first, fragrance is the one thing I will push for a sample to be made for me. If the sample doesn’t have staying power over a few wears, I will not buy no matter how much I love (sorry Lolita Lempicka). I like Lush perfumes but the “natural” perfumes seem to fade or morph to base notes faster. Mainstream commercial perfumes seem to last longer, maybe more synthetic ingredients. My longest lasting perfume (in the bottle and during wear) is Versace Crystal Noir Eau de Toliete. It is my occasional sultry evening wear fragrance, and I’ve had a bottle for probably 10 years. One or two spritzes still last all night!

  • Karen C

My all time favorite EDT is Hypnotic Poison by Dior. It’s a spicy, oriental fragrance. It lasts about a couple of hours. They have a new “type” of fragrance called Eau de Sensualle. I’m thinking I might try it and see if it lasts longer.

  • Dee

It’s not my favorite, which is a good thing, but Philosophy Amazing Grace is gone in about 15 min. Not kidding.

  • Ms. Heathen

My skin makes Britney Spears Fantasy just disappear after three hours. Same deal with Stella McCartney Stella and DKNY Be Delicious. Oh and most of Philosophy’s fragrances, and La Vie Est Belle. Some of it is user error since I try to apply fragrance very lightly, if other people can smell me I’m probably giving myself a massive headache.

But if I’m not loving the drydown on something, I can be guaranteed to be stuck with it forever and ever. I sampled Hypnotic Poison at one point and it stuck with me even through showering. My body chemistry does unkind things to that beautiful fragrance, it’s so sad.

  • Adrienne

For me its D&G Light Blue, ALL of my Marc Jacobs Favorites; Honey, Daisy Delight, and Sorbet. I put them on and before 10:00 am the fragrance has dissipated. I also had this issue with my D&G Dolce and I LOVE all of these fragrances.

  • Iris

I really liked the way Black Sun by Common Brimstone smelled in the bottle but my skin ate it. It was gone in 5 seconds. I’ll have to try a few more fragrances in the brand to see if they do the same thing. If so, I may have to gift them all to my mother.

    • Isabella Muse

i haven’t tried black sun but have a few of there other oils they are nice but not as strong as bpal!

  • Kirsten Norman

So is it really body chemistry? I loved this sample of Diptyque Eau Moheli, but it lasts no more than an hour. Apparently their “Eaux”s are fragranced water which I guess is similar to an eau de toilette? Or maybe they are even less concentrated. I just love this fragrance but don’t want to spend $100 for 100 mL of the weak stuff, and it doesn’t help that the $48 rollerball has 20 mL 🙁

    • Isabella Muse

in my experience eaux is just a fancy way of saying EDT lol! To me they seem a step down from EDT. I actually have the rollerball and the fragrance isn’t any better imho! Blame it on the formula maybe the lighter notes? Or just our body chemistry? But I’d love an EDP especially for this price!

  • Karen C

So I have a question. My mother has a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent parfume that she bought in Paris in 1958. Is it still good? The bottle is beautiful and it still smells wonderful but I was just curious if it is safe to still wear it 😀

    • Isabella Muse

Fragrances last about two years Karen depending on how they are formulated. It’s not dangerous, as far as I know, to use something that’s old! I wouldn’t doubt it still smells great as it is likely well made! Avon California is one of those scents that seems to have absolutely no expiration date and smells as fresh as it did fifty years ago haha! So no, I don’t think you’re doing anything bad if you use it!
