To Beard or Not to Beard That is the Question

Beards are apparently a hot and very trendy topic at the moment. If you live in New York I’m positive you’ve run across many a man sporting a beard. Sometimes unkempt, other times utterly trimmed to sheer perfection.

My personal favorite beard of choice would belong to my lovely friend Dusty. As far as I’m concerned he’s the only man alive that can have a beard and rock it hardcore.

It’s a funny thing as I see more and more products catering to beards. Beard oils, beard combs, hell Etsy has a crazy amount of beard related paraphernalia and grooming products. I mean there’s even like a fragrance mist for beards. Beards in the beauty industry are obviously VERY hot at the moment.

I’ve always sat and wondered how I’d handle having a beard. I mean are there issues with like beard crumbs after eating? Do you have to shampoo and condition your beard? Does it smell bad if you don’t? When you’re at a club does your beard get that weird smoky smell that sometimes clings to your hair after a night out? Do you have like bad beard days where your hair is standing up in all sorts of weird directions? I mean I already have a crazy skincare regimen plus add to the fact I have crazy hair (it’s long, wavy, and a pure bitch to take care of) plus a host of other girly issues and I cringe thinking how difficult it must be taking care of a beard.

I have to say one of the most surprising beards I’ve run across is Jamie Dornan. I dunno what it is but his beard kinda is a personality all itself. If you see him in an interview you can’t take your eyes away from the beard. It’s like they are interviewing the beard and not Jamie. It feels like it’s a separate entity. I can’t take my eyes off. Mind you this isn’t because I like his beard, it’s just so RIGHT THERE and I can’t seem to take my eyes off it. It’s unexpected and doesn’t seem to fit him for some reason.

Let’s not also forget about Ten’s beard. His grows in slightly ginger. You watch the man for several years running around in a trench coat and converse with the perfect head of hair and suddenly one day he wakes up with a beard and flat hair. It’s rather disturbing. Fan girls everywhere are still weeping that his smooth face and perfectly coiffed hair are gone forever more. I call his new look the Broadchurch.

ten

Fassy has a bit of a beard going on as well but I guess we can forgive his stupid sexy hotness. I mean Fassy’s beard crosses oceans so you have to give him a little credit!

I, myself, happen to be a huge bishounen boy fan myself. Smooth face is the way to go. Maybe a bit of stubble is nice but not all the time! But a full beard? No. It’s just not how I like my guy! I prefer a nice smooth face!

If you were a guy would you sport a beard? Seems like a lot of work to me haha!

Do you like guys with beards or are you all about a smooth face?

Do share!

I think beards can be nice sometimes but not unkempt, shaggy ones. My husband has a smooth face and that’s what I personally prefer. I’m not sure I’d like him with a beard!

Ten with a beard is very unkempt looking to me!

  • Amanda

I’m with you Muse, not a fan of a beard. I live in Charlotte NC and EVERYONE (well men I mean) here has a beard, it’s hilarious. Everyone I work with has a beard. Everyone when you go out has a beard. I don’t get it!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL everyone? That’s not good. *buys razors and hands them out*

      • Amanda

Haha that’s a good idea, I’ll carry around little gift sets to give out!

    • Isabella Muse

THANK god! I couldn’t handle it, I’d make you shave!

  • Missy

I’m in the minority LOL! I love my husband’s beard! He keeps it neat and tidy and it’s shot through with a little grey. Makes him look very handsome 😀 He keeps saying he’s going to shave it off and I keep saying Noooooo! LOL

  • Sarah

I’m not a fan of body hair on guys or gals as I find it icky. The only hair I’m Ok with is on the top of the head and eyebrows/lashes. I remember a few years ago, there was this big to do about guys that like to shave their chests and people thought it weird but I liked it.
I’m with you muse, I prefer the bishounen look myself.

  • Filipa Lourenço

I love beards, but the very short ones, not the hobo looking beards.

  • warpaintny17

Hi Muse! I agree, nowadays Jamie’s beard is too big and distracting. I like beards sometimes if they are short and neat. I usually prefer smooth faced or a little stubble!

    • Isabella Muse

very much so. It just doesn’t fit him! Me too 🙂 smooth is great, a little stubble at the end of the night is good 😀

  • Jackie

I like guys with beards…and without. Of course, it depends on the guy and how the beard looks on him, but if a guy can pull it off and it’s neatly groomed, I kinda dig it. It adds a certain character to his face. I also like guys clean-shaven…It all depends on the guy and what suits his features. But yes, beards are highly trendy these days.

  • eunice

JUST NO. no beards for me. i don’t like nasty beard burn. those long-haired metalhead dudes with beards are nice to look at, but nah.. even a stubble won’t do it for me. bishies are my thang.

    • Maggie

Oh, I totally agree! Sometimes, beards are nice to look at and complement some men’s features but beards are soo scratchy!

  • Nat

I like the time in between stubble and beard – that midpoint is the sweet spot for me. Like Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3…mmmmmmm…. *drool*

    • Isabella Muse

naa Snake always appears completely unkempt to me Nat! *shakes head* nope! Skip!

      • Nat

*GASP!* Blasphemy! *covers ears* LALALALLALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU LALALALLALALLA

        XD

        • Isabella Muse

I’m so sorry! They keep changing his appearance and it seems to get nastier and nastier! lol! Although I have other game crushes I can share does that make up for my lack of Snake love? You know i love my bishounen boys Nat!

          • Nat

Haha, yes you are forgiven! I just finished watching Giant Bomb’s “Metal Gear Scanlon” playthrough of 3, so I’m all in love with Snake right now (well, I pretty much always am but it’s particularly strong with me today, lolz). 😀

I like bishounen too, but only if the guy looks grouchy/angry. Or has lines under his eyes. I’m weird in my tastes! XD

          • Isabella Muse

I haven’t watched it yet, it launched a few days ago didn’t it? I’m honestly not a die heard Gear girl. Maybe Des might creep in as stubbly hotness! I can give him a pass. http://gothic-icecream.deviantart.com/art/Desmond-Miles-282727860 Just a little stubble, if he had his hood on in this pic even better! I’ll give you that for stubble. Compromise? Remind again why we are endorsing such otaku behavior and perving on gaming characters? Shame on us. The Mr Darcy grouchy ones are nice but Lee Lee Joon-gi being all sad and mopey really does it for me too! You just wanna hug him, give him a cookie, and tell him everything is going to be ok! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buHi2f8jMI4

          • Nat

Yah, it went up just two days ago I think?

Whaaaa? Des? When there’s Ezio to drool over? Girl we have different priorities, lolz! 😀

          • Isabella Muse

Ezio come on! Des got more of a college guy look! Wait, there has to be a fanfic for that somewhere right? Ezio and Des? 😀

  • Nina

I am not a beard girl. But never say never. Michael Fassbender can have a beard and be wearing a sack and he would still be hot in my opinion.

    • Isabella Muse

the man can walk around in holey sweatpants and a sweaty, dirty t-shirt and I’d be like, “Fassy honey, you look good enough to eat”

  • Ryou

Hmm, I personally prefer smooth face just because I like the texture better, otherwise it’s a bit of a sensory processing issue for me (beard burns are no fun). Not to mention that as far as preferences go, I tend to be more attracted to femme over macho.

Ultimately, though, it’s really up to the guy. My preferences has nothing to do with whether someone should grow their facial hair or not, or how they should grow one. I’m not going to police it, much like how I expect people not to police my decisions regarding my appearance, either.

  • Carolyn

I don’t mind neat and trim beards but am not a fan of the big bushy ones that you see on a lot of hockey/baseball players.

Also, it is on trend right now so am seeing beards on some men that don’t have the face for it (but then who isn’t guilty for trying to be on trend when we can’t pull it off)

you see a lot of interesting looks in Movember and for some men, I’m very happy when December 1 comes around 🙂

  • Molly

    Beard all the way.
I find beardless mens’ faces to inevitably have some scratchiness – no thank you. Also, my husband looks about 12 when he shaves his beard off, so he’s only done that once in the 10 years I’ve known him. 🙂

  • Tracy

Aw, where’s the stubble option? I prefer my husband with some hair on his face, and so does he. No full-on beards, but no baby-smooth skin either. To me the five o’clock shadow is manly but not obnoxious or distracting.

  • Heather F.

I like both clean-shaven guys and guys with beards, provided the beards are short and well-groomed. I can’t appreciate lumberjack beard trend, maybe because it makes me think of creepy old polygamist pioneers and I’m not really into that. (But if someone is happy with their messy beard, more power to them.)

My husband grew a beard last month and it was unexpectedly hot (like, *really* hot; I guess his face shape just works really well with a short beard?); unfortunately, he couldn’t figure out how to trim/style/groom it and shaved it off in frustration rather than let it grow unkempt. Hopefully he’ll grow it back.

    • Heidi

Ha, I gotta laugh at this. My husband has a beard (a neat one) and I talked him into shaving it off ages ago, mainly because they’re scratchy. It didn’t look right once it was off. I instantly started campaigning to get it back. Thank god he did!

    • Isabella Muse

haha agreed Aurora 🙂 totally love Des! It’s the hoodie!

  • Heidi

I didn’t like beards when I was in my teens and 20s, but now some guys look pretty hot with them. My husband has a beard, too, which helps a lot. It just looks like him, if that makes sense? He keeps it neat, though. If it were a Duck Dynasty guy’s beard, however, yuck! The way Joseph Fiennes has it in Shakespeare in Love = hot!

  • Sandy

I’m the same way Muse. I’d make my guy shave if he decided one day it was a good day to grow a beard! Just not into the beard thing!

  • Kitty

I love my husband’s beard, but it has a lot to do with my job. I teach high school music and when my husband shaves he looks like a high school kid. It makes me feel gross and wrong. For me, a beard makes a man look….. well, manly.

  • Monica

The Broadchurch isn’t too bad on him! He looked the best as the Doctor, though. The beard is much better than his ponytail/mullet for Richard III. I looked up how much it would be to meet him at one of the SciFi conventions… $400!!!! I kept thinking of your version of “If I had a million dollars.” “I’d take you to meet Dr. Who.” 🎶🎶

    • Isabella Muse

he looks rough to me, hard to see him in Broadchurch lol! AMEN! the mullet was fiercely bad! LOL! I know! The Who experience was overpriced as hell!!!! I’ve been to many cons but never dished out $400 for a photo. obscene!

  • jacinda

I do not like beards on guys under 40. For the life of me, I cannot understand why a man would want to hide away his face, under a beard, during his formative years. And by that, I mean while he is at his youngest, best looking, time of his life. You just cannot get those years back.
