What Makeup and Beauty Are You Hoarding?

makeup hoarder

Hello, I’m the Muse and I’m recovering pigment collector who’s in remission for nearly 10 years now. Yeah, I use to hoard pigments. I think maybe at this point in my makeup life I have enough pigments that I can maybe combing with a mixing medium and create shimmery bricks which in turn can be used to build a sparkly little cottage on a English hill somewhere overlooking the ocean.

What Makeup and Beauty Are You Hoarding?

I think makeup junkies are perhaps natural hoarders. We like something and automatically we need to own it in EVERY SINGLE SHADE EVER CREATED! ASAP! Oh dear, you can sit and shake your head mentally and tell yourself you are not that girl or guy but deep down you know you kinda are. Some people have a better handle on it than others but 99% of us just hoard makeup like the factories will burn down tomorrow and never create a color cosmetic again ever.

Shrug.

Who knows where our weird mentality comes from.

I’ve improved over the years that’s for sure. I’ve finally figured out I don’t absolutely need every single shade of brown eyeshadow ever made. I also downsize a lot and give away lots of makeup, etc…!

I do however, still have my hoarding tendencies. For example, Bath & Body Works Candles and Hand Soaps are two items I have hard time giving up! I won’t disclose the exact amount of candles and hand soaps I have but just know when the apocalypse hits you can come over my place and we’ll always have plenty of light from beautifully scented candles and plenty of hand soap to wash away zombie guts!

What makeup and beauty do you hoard?

Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I hoard makeup until I run out of space or can officially admit that I won’t use something. I give TONS away to my friends and family. I am not quite as bad with shower gels, lotions, etc, because I throw out the old products when I get new ones. If they are totally unused I will also give those away.

  • Jennifer

Samples! I have an entire drawer full of makeup samples and skincare samples. I haven’t used them because they’re the wrong color, etc. But, I cannot make myself throw them away!

    • Isabella Muse

that’s an interesting one Jennifer! I’m a terrible person as I’m guilty of throwing away samples!

      • Angela

Isabella you should donate them to a woman’s shelter or the military. They are always looking for these types of things!

        • Isabella Muse

I actually donate new makeup/beauty items to an organization for young girls/teens. They do outreach for special events like Proms where girls can’t afford makeup, clothes, accessories and need a little extra helping 🙂

          • Rachel R.

I think that’s great. I need to do something like that. I have all these huge palettes from e.l.f. and bhcosmetics that I got as GWPs. The quality is really good, but I just don’t use them, since I have so much other stuff. Then there is stuff from subscription beauty boxes that I don’t use.

          • Isabella Muse

donate my dress was a prom dress donation service from several years back! I called them up a few years ago asking if they needed makeup/skincare/etc and they recommended me to local orgs that would take the items Rachel. You might to check them out! Also my Girlfriend’s Closet is a nice one for donating clothing/accessories for women in need!

          • Isabella Muse

ps if you’re in NY check out the LESGC! A HUGE favorite of mine. They are an empowering org for young women!

          • Jenny

Sorry for intruding onto this thread, I’m in NY and I’ve been looking for places to donate my unused makeup since I’m downsizing my ridiculously large collection. Does LESGC take make up?

          • Isabella Muse

Jenny, you can actually email them as they typically have a list of things they need depending on the season! 🙂 and yes, they will take makeup, just depends on if they need it at the moment 🙂 Hope this helps! Thank you for your interest! It is a great org and I’m happy someone showed interested in it!

  • Brittanie

I hoard makeup palettes like nobody’s business. When Christmas time rolls around I go into complete pokemon mode and gotta catch em all. And I am completely okay with this 🙂

    • Maddy

Hahaha “Pokemon mode!” I’m exactly the same way! But it’s not just around Christmas! I have a problem I think :p Who just picked up all three of the new Tarte palettes? This girl. Did I need them? Absolutely not. But 15% off at Sephora made it justifiable for me!

      • kimkats

ROFLOL!! I hear you about the new Tarte palettes! Didja see the new QVC TSV one that Muse posted about a couple days ago? that whole set may be another “gottagit” for me!

      • Butakimu

I’m so guilty of hoarding palettes too. Too Faced & Marc Jacobs palettes are my weak spot.

  • devon

a couple times a year, i would put together shopping bags of makeup and beauty crap and give them to my friends to pour over and take what they wanted. when i became vegetarian a couple years ago, i purged EVERYTHING that was not cruelty free…i really hardened my heart and chucked things i liked and gave away anything giveawayable. but then i started back up with cruelty-free brands. and i replenished… but the one product i have WAY too much of is mascara. i’m talking tubes and tubes and tubes and i use them all equally (i do replace and throw away when necessary!) but i need ever. single. one.

    • dia

      I do that, too 🙂
Once in a while, I would get together with friends over brunch, and bring with me a huge bag of samples ranging from fragrance vials to packets of foundation to tubes of cleansers for them to pick over. I’ve also brought mini cleansers and shampoos that I don’t want to the local homeless shelters.

  • Karen

I hoard nude lip products, and eyeshadow pallet. And body lotions, sprays and perfumes. Oh and mascaras. And eyeliners. Lol. It’s a problem but one I love to have. I have an entire room donated to my makeup and my bathroom has a large 16″x16″ container that is overflowing with all of my bath and body products. My friends make fun of me for it, until they want to come over to my house to get ready for an outing and use my stuff. Lol.

  • Danadoo

Ive got big time lipstick hoarding tendencies..i havent counted them lately, but i have at least 100 tubes! I go shopping in my own stash when i feel like i want something new. I get paid tomorrow and I’ve been conspiring to buy some more clinique intense chubby lip pencils..those things are the greatest, and my favorite lipsticks i own!

  • Eve

Lipstick. Some people eat their feelings, I buy lipsticks. There’s just something about a pretty new lipstick in a lovely color that makes me feel happy. I wear almost all of my lipsticks so my hoarding isn’t that bad imo.

  • TropicalChrome

Nail Polish. Don’t ask how many bottles I have. I don’t know. I have never counted. I don’t plan on it. I don’t want to know either.

I know I have elebenty gabillion bottles of dark purple shimmer polish all of which are a tiny hair different in shade because I have zero resistance to the siren call of a new dark purple shimmer nail polish. And I’ve made my peace with this. So when the apocalypse comes, we’ll have candlelight, clean hands, and dark purple nails :).

(I do keep a box of polishes I KNOW I will never, ever use again, and I let any friends who are interested look it over and take whatever they want. Some of the polishes that were complete fails for me have been wonderful for them.)

    • Dayna

Me too! I’m a nail polish hoarder. Every once in a while I go through and shake them all because I fear they’ll become unusable if they separate? The purples seem to separate the fastest! I have way too many hot pink nail polishes. I keep buying the same color in different brands without realizing it. And I bought Madison Ave Hue twice by accident. I’ve gotten good at giving myself manicures and they can sometimes last up to two weeks, then I feel guilty not changing the color since I own so many bottles. I can never win. How it started – I used to buy myself a new bottle every time I wanted a manicure because I figured I was saving myself money by not going to a salon. (Get nail polish for 1-6 bucks versus a manicure for 10 to 25 bucks) Now the only new bottles allowed into my house come from ipsy.

      • mirandagrosvenor

Nail polish doesn’t expire and you can always thin it out, so I’ve ceased to feel the least bit guilty about that. Get a good topcoat and you’re golden.

I have way too much of pretty much everything, except skincare. It’s just not exciting and since I’m using it when I’m still half asleep I don’t want to think about it too hard. I have things I’m happy with finally and I’m not inclined to experiment.

    • JoElla

      Nail polish is my weakness.

And what color is on my toes and fingers right now? Nothing.. they are nekked.
I am hopeless utterly hopeless. I am currently getting my list together for the zoya sale.

  • dia

Those little samples of perfume vials! They give away so many of them, and I think it’s such a waste to toss them, so I have a bag filled with probably 100 VOCs. I’m usually faithful to my current scent (B Balenciaga), so I rarely use the samples, but I do give them away to friends.

    • Lisa

This was fun reading for those of us who “collect”. I love the perfume samples vials, and I use the small BBW cleaned out candle (glass) to hold the samples I have. I use those up and refill with more because I always have MORE SAMPLES! I also collect lipstick, gloss and lip liners. I love them all and try to get around to using them at least once or twice — maybe have 100?? And only two lips……

  • Erin

Lip stuff, nail polish and Sephora palettes…I want all the colors!! It’s a problem! I need to let my friends look-such a great idea 🙂

  • ashley

I’m a perfume hoarder, and I love skincare. But if you saw my collection of everything, you could definitely tell its a borderline obsession.

    • Isabella Muse

omg me too ashley. I hoard perfume too! bad idea though they go bad 🙁 haha!

  • Krystle

I hoard single eyeshadows (I have about 90 last time I counted), lip products (about 180?) and mascara (about 30). I have way too much, but I must have MORE

  • kimkats

don’t….. need…. every….shade….. of… brown… eyeshadow?… what are these words you speak? 😀 I used to hoard BE loose eyeshadows. I still have virtually all the ones I ever owned, and I haven’t touched them in years. Literally. But I can’t bring myself to toss them, or figure out something else to do with them. I think I’m going to press some of them, and then I’ll have to figure out what else to do with the rest of them. But there are some lovely shades that I can’t bring myself to unload.

I did a major purge of things about a year ago, and with the untouched stuff I had, I make like 8 gift bags for a local shelter for women and kids for Christmas. I figured the little kids would make out like bandits b/c Everyone wants to make sure the little kids have something for Christmas. I figured the older kids and the women should have the same consideration, and I think most all women like to get skin care/makeup to play with. I like to think maybe having it gave them a little bit of a boost. I bought some inexpensive (but amazingly nice) makeup bags at a local dollar store and packaged the products up in those, and then put that in a gift bag for the holidays. I think it was a good way to pass on things I would never use.

I still buy makeup but not as much as I used to. For one thing, it used to be the thrill of the chase; now I have nearly all the brands I’m interested in less than an hour away, so the chase is gone. Furthermore, I’ve just become more selective in what I know I would use, and the insane “gotta have it b/c it’s hot” lemming seems to have moved on.

    Wow – that’s a long winded answer, isn’t it? 😛

  • Heidi

Oh god, I hoard way too much, I’m sure.
I have samples, but usually just a quart-size ziploc bag of them, and not stuffed to capacity.
I also hang onto nail polishes (I might have about 400 of those), plus close to 200 lipsticks and balms. If I find a lipstick I like or a sale, I want to hoard them, especially if I think this beloved shade or formula will go the way of the dodo.
I especially love finding a sale, though. If I can score $75 worth of stuff for $15, I’m thrilled.
I also have too many CC and BB creams, too many hand creams and a fair amount of the Bath & Body Works candles.
I work mostly from home so I justify that last purchase as making the home office extra lovely. (I’m sure the scent of Lilac Blossom, Red Velvet Cake or Sunshine helps my productivity!)
I do try and toss stuff that never gets used or starts to smell off, for whatever that’s worth.

I do try and toss stuff out from time to time, too.

  • Carrie

I must confess! While I only wear lipstick once in a while (I always forget to reapply), I have so many tubes! I have corals, reds, purples, nudes, pinks, and an orange but I have them tucked away. I didn’t even realize how many I had until I was organizing my stash a bit ago.

  • TLE

I’m hoarding Sonia Kaschuk items! I stocked up before Target closed down in Canada, and now I’m afraid to use it…..I’m rationing!

  • Maria

Everything!!’ Palettes, qcv sets on auto delivery, individual items and nail polish, lippies. Not too many body lotions.

    • aztrouble24

Qvc and hsn sets are my downfall too. Especially the IT Cosmetics sets. I’ve never not bought whatever they were selling in whatever auto pay auto delivery special tsv
It’s all my grandma and mothers fault I remember them as a kid being delivered on a daily basis. I’m sure the wills have $22000 of qvc jewelery I’ll be receiving some day…

  • Meredith

Lip. Gloss. Pink, rose, purple, nude, shimmer, matte, cream, sheer, opaque. It’s a problem. I probably have over 200. But I use so many and love them all. I do weed out the collection occasionally and throw out the ones that smell funky etc.

  • Angela

Everything beauty! I have two walk-in closets full right now of totes loaded with stuff.

  • Brendanese

I hoard Eyeshadow palettes— I’m scared to count but I know for a fact I have at least 30 and I have at least 5 Too Faced Palettes… yet I’ve never tried their eyeshadow formula…. There’s a serious backstock of new products to try :/

  • Rachel R.

Eyeshadows of all kinds, including loose mineral/loose pigments, palettes (my biggest weakness! It’s like getting a new box of crayons as a kid.), singles (less than the previous two, but still a ton of them); eyeliner pencils, and lipsticks.

  • Patsy

Marketing gets me with palettes ALL THE TIME! Sure, I probably have 1/2 the palette already in my stash. But not all in one place with this particular designed packaging!
I also hoard: nail polish (some over 20 years old now), lipstick, samples (throwing them away would be so wasteful!), and lipliners.
Thankfully, I was never into the Bath & Bodyworks craze, or those BOGO sales they always have would have me drownding.

  • Erin

Blush!! Blush, blush and more blush. I can’t stop. I probably have 40+ compacts or pans of blush *hangs head in shame* I always tell myself I cannot purchase another blush until I’ve used up at least 2. However it takes FOREVER to use up a pan of blush. I then get antsy for my next fix, end up caving and buying at least 3 new shades of (insert name of whatever new blush release here). It is such a vicious cycle.

  • Soup

I have been a counter manager at Clinique/Macy’s, a DM for Sally Beauty Supply and a SM For BBW…I’m hopeless. My worst obsession is iridescent lip glosses, like Inglot 541…they look blue in the tube and turn an awesome pink on my lips. The only things I don’t horde is blush, I mostly use a pallet and I use Clinique rinse off High Impact mascara pretty much exclusively.

  • Zovesta

Definitely lipstick. Mostly wet n wild lipstick, and KOCO lipstick. Aside from that, some eyeshadow, I guess! Not a whole lot else I hoard, I like to get a few of every kind of thing.

  • Caroline

hehe, good comments here, love reading about people’s hoardes.

I love lipsticks – usually in the berry colors. I keep telling myself, do not buy another lipstick/gloss, stick, etc… but then I want to try that brand or this brand….

  • Jen

i’m guilty, I hoard lip products….any and all types of them. I don’t like that I hoard them, but I continue to.

  • Sacre

Eyeshadows, in any form. And perfumes, the more, the merrier. I also stack samples. Just recently pulled them out and for use, since I’ll get more anyways.

  • brenda

Depends, sometimes it’s meteorites, sometimes it’s mac lipstick, or blush, or eyeshadow… Right now it’s highlighters from mac LE, and beauty powders 🙂

  • Pama

Bare Minerals Loose Eyeshadows. I’ve only ever totally used up one pot of e/s, becauseI think I need every new color of loose shadow that Bare Minerals makes. I recently packed up a huge box of duplicates and gave them to my niece.
Lipsticks are my other weakness. Couldn’t tell you the last time I completely used up a lip product. Wait! Oh yeah, it was Fresh Sugar Berry lip treatment.

  • Katie

I’m all about the blush! I have so many, so I feel compelled to use blush in every single makeup look, but it can make a look come off as overdone, especially if I’m wearing a vibrant lip as well. They are just so pretty and you can’t really go wrong, like you can with lip shades.

  • Bonnie S

I have 250 lipsticks (counted ’em) but I don’t count that as hoarding because I am in denial. And yes, I have several tubes of the same shade. And yes, some of the colours I now hate and won’t ever wear. Sigh.

  • aztrouble24

I’m non discriminatory I hoard all makeup. 12 foundations, bb, cc, for summer, 13 for winter, 200 lipsticks I hardly wear, eyeshadow palettes out the wazoo and so much qvc and hsn.
I think I’m getting close to my own show, makeup hoarders soon to be on tlc. ..

  • MandyB

I have a lot of almost everything, but lip balm and hand cream are the worst hoard for me. Oh, and the perfect product that is FCS whipped body butter. I seriously have 17 of them. I had to make a mental note to stop buying more till I use up what I have.

  • Natalie

I used to let myself buy makeup on a whim and wound up with a lot of waste after a few years. For me having anything I wanted was fun at first and then got old after a while. Now I am the opposite and am a minimalist in a way. I have makeup and still love it, but it is only the best quality and is a well edited collection. I use all of the makeup I own. I don’t have makeup which I hoard and sits in a drawer not used. Happiness isn’t having ten foundations anymore.

  • bebe

I am a sheet mask CRACKHEAD!!!..My Beauty Diary, My Scheming, Barrier Repair, Lovemore, Naruko..you name it, I’ve got it. I do use them, but not fast enough to justify purchasing more..and yet there I am..on Sasa.com, Everydaybeauty.com and Amazon..then there are the bi-weekly trips to Main St. Flushing and Canal Street “just to look”, and I ALWAYS come home with a bag full of stuff. Last time I took inventory I had 700 masks, but by the time you read this, it’ll probably be up to 750 (but I’ll bet that I’ve probably got the best looking skin in Brooklyn as a result, LoL). 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

are sisters Bebe lol! I am constantly hauling huge bags of stuff home from Queens particularly masks lol!

  • YoKasta Martinez

I’m an eyeshadow, pigment. and eyeliner hoarder – and not just any old hoarder either – I hoard Urban Decay and MAC products especially, but Sugarpill is slowly creeping its way up that list too! It doesn’t matter if it’s a palette or a single eyeshadow; if it catches my eye and I read enough reviews of said product on all the beauty blogs I follow, then I have to have it.

I also hoard skincare. I’m always looking for something that works on my extremely oily skin that actually does what it promises. So far, I’ve only found a handful of products that deliver, so until I find my Holy Grail prodcuts, I guess I’ll just keep on hoarding 🙂

I did a product purge a couple of weeks ago. I’m about to do another one this weekend. It’s going to be interesting to see what I give away this time!!

  • Pamela

I am totally hoarding something that is no longer available. Smashbox Photo Finish ILLUMINIZING primer. I mix it with my foundation. I can’t find one thing to replace it!

    It makes your skin glow.

  • Genevieve

I am a bath and body hoarder. Especially during the sales, I will pick up lots. But then I use them as gifts for my friends during the year. A brand I know you don’t have in the US is Natio – cruelty free and it has the BEST bath and body products ever. I have really sensitive skin and yet I can use their shower gels. So, I have a lot of these.
Yes, I am a long time lipstick queen, perfume queen and eyeshadow palette queen. I try to give them all love.

  • Iris

I hoard a lot: lipglosses, lipsticks, eyeshadow, perfume, soap/body washes, lotions. I’m trying to cut back; nowadays I only get an item if I really want it.

  • Cate

I “hoard” Korean makeup and skincare. I love them so much. Laneige products changed my life.

In makeup in general, I’m a lip product hoarder. Not much on lip glosses but Lawd knows that I have enough lipsticks for 10 people. XD I’m trying to cut back on my makeup purchases but when I pass by a Skinfood or a The Face Shop store, the temptation… oh, it’s a struggle.

  • Cindy

It is insane to hoard stuff. I mean, how much time does one need to finish lets say a lipstick or an eyeshadow? I don’t need that many colours and I am completely fine with what I have.

I do wonder when I am going to finish those 16 brown eyeliners though? I just pulled them all out and I know they all have another wear. But from those 16 liners I actually have 2 diffrent colours of brown. Just 2 diffrent colours and I am fully aware of the they are not the same they are simmilair- rule.

Somehow I have this fear of waking up and not have a brown liner on stand by. Why? I have to go on an brown liner no buy untill I am on at least 4.2 Dark brown, 2 more copper, 2 UD that will last me all day and 2 lets say with less staying power.

  • Cecilia

Eyeshadow palettes, the bigger the better. The thing is, I can’t even apply eyeshadow properly… but they’re just so pretty!
