Maybelline Volum' Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash1

Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash Mascara is the newest formula to join the Maybelline Colossal Mascara family. The Colossal Chaotic Lash Mascara comes to us as part of Maybelline’s Summer 2015 Collection but will remain permanently available from my understanding.

Who approved the marketing ad on this mascara? It displays a model with spidery, clumpy lashes…eep! Not the look I go for when applying mascara but ummm ok maybe Maybelline wants to take a little “creative” liberties with the mascara marketing.

Maybelline the Colossal Chaotic Lash

I actually remember enjoy the original and first Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Mascara but since that release there have been dozens of formulations and brush applicator changes that haven’t really caught my attention. I’m all about new and exciting products but the constant stream of “Miss Manga”, “the Colossal”, “Voluminous”, and other releases is not only confusing but so repetitive. As far as I’m concerned most times it’s just about a brush change and not so much a formula one.

Do we need another Colossal Mascara?

I say nay!

Maybelline Volum' Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash

Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash kinda gives you a little thrill, I mean chaotic? That could mean “OMG awesomely long lashes” or it could mean “OMG spidery clumpy lashes (as seen on the model)”. In the end, there’s actually nothing chaotic about this little mascara.

The chaotic formula has what Maybelline calls a “teaser brush” which is basically a straight bushier brush that has a slight curve at the head. This brush is supposed to plump and “disorganize” lashes into a “sexy mess”. Umm ok? It applies pretty straight forward to me. The first time I used it I did get a little mascara on my upper lash line which I needed to tidy up with my trust Missha The Style Eye Makeup Speedy Remover Stick. But honestly, the several times after that I used it I never had an issue so maybe blame that little mess on shaky hands.

Maybelline Volum' Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash mascara

There’s actually nothing chaotic or disorganized going on with my lashes as I sweep this one. It adds a little but of volume to my lashes but not a tone o length. It doesn’t clump up or create a gooey messy the way L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Rock does (I expected the formulas to act in similar ways but Miss Manga Rock is definitely the messy of the two). It’s pretty straight forward application that adds a little volume but nothing else dramatic to my lashes. The formula is waterproof but does easily remove with an oil based eye makeup remover at the end of the day. My lashes are a little stiff after application but nothing too crazy. It does keep curl fairly well but again I’m not seeing dramatic results with this especially considering the marketing is all about crazy, hot mess looking lashes.

Maybelline the Colossal Chaotic Lash

I had no issues with smudging or smearing on my dry eyes nor did the mascara flake.

Shrug…

Chaotic? Naaa. This one comes in like a lion across marketing but applies like a complete lamb. I wouldn’t say Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash did very much for my lashes sadly. If you want the gooey, spidery clumpy lash look you might want to try Miss Manga Rock instead as that’s all about messy! But the Colossal Chatoic Lash formula doesn’t relieved much of anything.

Tried it?

I was thinking the marketing was weird with that clumpy mascara ad, too. I guess it’s runway-inspired, where they roll out the more crazy looks, but I can get that look with any mascara by just applying about 16 coats. It’s the Tammy Faye Bakker look!

    • Isabella Muse

yeah or they just wanted to be a little creative with it and perhaps appealing to teens or younger girls/guys! LOL it is the Tammy Faye look! haha!

    • Marilyn

OMG I totally forgot about Tammy Faye Bakker haha! Uh oh I think we’re both showing our age though. 🙂

I had to put on about 4 coats of the mascara to notice anything, and that just produced a normal look. It added volume and a teeny bit of length. I do actually like it, but I probably won’t purchase it again if I have to use 4 coats on each eye every single time. I think I’ll try the L’oreal Manga Rock next, because I actually was looking for a spikey punk eyelash look.

    Yikes! That advertisement.
Actually, now that I am thinking about it – my eyelashes did look very similar to when I first used the Miss Manga mascara (before I let it dry out a bit).
    Not a good look.

this mascara/ad is the reason we all swear by lash comb and spoolie brushes! i can’t picture any guy or gal looking at someone and thinking ‘daaaamn those crazy spider legs lashes are fiiiine!’ but, if you do it for you and you alone, then power to ya!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL amen sista! 🙂 I think it could be potentially a cool emo/goth look maybe?! but personally I don’t like the hot spidery mess look on my lashes!

  • danadoo

Oh dear, the marketing for this is truly terrible! I would never, EVER, EVER, in a million years wear my mascara like that! This is a makeup crime in my book! Ugh!

  • Lydia

It’s odd, Miss Manga Punky is my favourite mascara by far, I love it, such volume! I love a runway look and am not shy to try looks, but ultimately, the only way this would look okay is if the person wearing it were so naturally stunning that the undone messiness was a juxtaposition. Otherwise I think you’d just look a bit mental.

  • Katherine T.

Oh my, I’m not sure what they were thinking with that ad. The poor model–she must’ve lost all her lashes trying to remove that sticky, clumpy mess off.

  • Debby

When I saw the display at Walmart the big spidery lashes threw me off, like “what is happening to her eyelashes???”Than I thought it was a special Pumped Up- same tube style and wand(just bent). Low and behold it’s a Colossal(mess)!

  • Courtney

I think the reason it didn’t work for you is because you’re supposed to use the end of the brush and “tease” your lashes while they’re still wet. That’s what it says on the advertisement, so that’s how I know. Anyway you’re probably better off not using the teaser end, since it looks so weird all spiked

Damn, I’ve been sporting this look against my will for years. I call it, “Waking up half drunk from the night before at someone else’s house and trying to put a fresh coat of your old cheap makeup on over yesterday’s in a hurry, then realizing that that there’s nothing you can do about the fact that you are about to spend the rest of the day looking like (as mentioned above)Tammy Faye Baker.”

Until reading several positive reviews for this product, I was kind of under the impression that Maybeline put a lot of money and effort into a new product, realized it was a disgusting mess, then decided they could just market it as a fashion statement.

Anyone setting on the fence whether to try or not should. I love maybelline mascara since high school. Great lash, falsies and now chaotic waterproof,is awesome. If you want full, thick and clumpy lashes in a good way you’ll love this. I got compliments first day. So easy to use. I do about three coats each eye then go back and forth on top lashes with wand.I’ll never buy anything else and always used maybelline over high priced mascaras. Doesn’t smudge or flake. I use Neutrogena eye remover with no problem. Throw your false lashes away.
