beauty confession

The Beauty Confessional Box is open and ready to take your sins. You can go ahead and admit your most embarrassing beauty sins without fear of being judged!

My last beauty confession was in 2010 when I admitted to…gulp….using Mary Kate and Ashley Haircare. What?! It smelled awesome! Don’t judge!

For my next beauty confession, well, I’m sure you’ll laugh but..

teen spirit deo

I like to use Teen Spirit deodorant.

Can I use the same excuse as I did with the Mary Kate and Ashley Haircare? It smells awesome!

I refuse to be ashamed.

Ok, your turn.

Go ahead and admit your most embarrassing secret!

Dig deep!

Tell us something you’d never ever admit to anyone else.

It’s ok, it’s the Internet, no one is reading this stuff!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. it’s not embarrassing…but i always find myself perusing the bonne bell section at harmons and picking up a vanilla frosting lip sparkler every now and then. :]

  • Dusty

Sometimes I use Vaseline as night cream? Is that a good one? Haha! It works! People freak out about it but I wake up and my dry skin is SO soft! That and Ponds. I love Ponds!

Oh and White Shoulders body powder! I like to smell like an old lady and I love body powders! Love love love!!!

      • Dusty

I have NOT but I’m all about old lady gorgeousness so consider me there! Haha!

After I left the comment I remembered another one of mine… your Teen Spirit love reminded me. I don’t think it’s bad but it’s something I don’t EVER tell anyone because it gets me looks… so here goes:

I actually haven’t used deodorant since… sometime in the mid-late 90’s. I don’t sweat much so I just stopped using it and it feels SO much better! I’ve never experienced a wet forehead or sweat dripping down my body. Even when I work out really hard I just get kind of dewy. LOL! I’m a princess that way.

        • Isabella Muse

LOL Dusty you’re always a princess my dear no matter if you’re dewy, sweaty, or not 😀 I’m not really one that sweats either but it is ingrained in me to use deo…I wonder what would happen if I just didn’t bother…I’d worry I’d be all smelly and not realize it or something!

          • Dusty

Haha! I don’t know… I just never have been really super smelly. If I don’t shower for a full day then yes, don’t stand near me LOL! But otherwise…

I also dated this guy in high school (when I was in high school too, not like recently LOL) who was really cute (he looked like Trent Reznor) and I remember how he always smelled just faintly of natural human body odor. Not overpowering, just a little… and it turned me on SO MUCH! Haha! That’s about the time I threw in the towel on the deodorant… LOL

          • Isabella Muse

You always have the best stories LOL! always! So far you’ve dated J-Pad and Trent Raznor, I am jealous 😀

        • AB

OMG! I have the exact same thing!

I do have hypohidrosis and totally can’t sweat though, but in middle and high school I felt… peer pressured to slick on a little after gym class just so the others don’t look at me weird. 😡 But once I got to college I was all like “nahhhhh”.

      • sam

hey guys! wait, vaseline on your face? how do you use it, as a night cream or eye cream and leave it to soak in overnight? doesn’t it just sit on top of your skin? haha wow tell me more this could be the cheapest beauty fix! love
        !!!!

        • Isabella Muse

I massage it under my eyes gently and leave it on overnight and just gently wash it off in the AM. If I have flaky areas on my face I’ll do the same in the Winter and in the morning just wet a wash cloth and rub it away easily 🙂

  • Diana

I didn’t know they still sold that! It was the first deodorant I used. I don’t think girls going through puberty in the ’90s were allowed to use anything else.

  • Soup

Jean Nate’, Sea Breeze, Mr. Bubble…there’s more but I’m hyperventilating.

    • DiDi

I love the smell of Jean Nate and Sea Breeze was the only thing that worked for my break outs when I was a teen. It’s also good for getting hair dye off your skin

  • Nelly

Maybe it’s not like the most embarrassing thing but, I like to wear red lipstick when I’m in my house, alone and with any reason to go out, I don’t know it make me feel good 😀

  • EliCaroline

Girl! I also still use the Teen Spirit deodorant! They used to make a Cool Coconut scent that I loved. I hoarded cases of it until I used it up/it expired and had to toss it. For me, it works better than any other deodorant ever has. I’ve switched to the pink scent (and it works great) but I really miss Cool Coconut.

    • Isabella Muse

I think the pink scent is all they have now! I used to love the strawberry one. People would ask me about my perfume when I wore it, meanwhile, it was my deo! haha!

  • Cassi

I use Nyx milk as a matte highlighter.

    Yeah. I’m really that pale.

  • Jenn

My confession is really bad. I have an old Maybelline eyeshadow from college that I still use. The color , texture and pigmentation are perfect. You would never think it was a drugstore eyeshadow They haven’t made it in a long time. I finally stopped using it for fear of it rotting out my eyeballs, though it never changed in scent, texture etc. I purchased it in…..sigh…1998. Yes yes, you can judge all you like but it’s still perfect. Perfect I tell you!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL!!!!!!! Jenn I love you for admitting that. You’re my makeup hero!

  • Jenncess

My beauty confession is that I only love one perfume, and its discontinued. I have been to many many many different makeup counters and have been sprayed with anything and everything and yet, I only like one…

I pay ridiculous amounts to get my perfume on Ebay or poshmark.

    Ralph Lauren “Hot”.

    • Isabella Muse

I love the regular Ralph LOVE! And I was thinking oh “Hot” hmm can’t remember that smells like but wouldn’t fragrancenet have it and I googled and holy shiz! It’s like $199-$150 dollars a bottle. WHAT!? How much do you pay for it Jenncess?! Who knew?

      • Jenncess

Well… I just got lucky and bought a 1.7 ounce bottle, less than 1/2 empty for $17.99 on Poshmark… which was a steal!!

I am constantly browsing sites daily to look for deals.

  • Liz Hover

I used to spit in my eye shadow. To make liner. I did it for years without consequences. I tend to use a little water now. Being that I’m 40 and supposedly a grown up :/

    • Heidi

Ha, I’ve done that before. I used to lick an eyeliner brush and then run it into shadow to make liner. I try not to do that anymore, but it could happen. I also still will lick a Q-tip and use that to clean up eyeliner mistakes.

      • Liz Hover

Heidi – that’s EXACTLY what I used to do *fist bump*

  • Heidi

I didn’t know they had Teen Spirit anymore. Someone used to have a lilac one that I loved, and I keep wishing they’d re-release that one.

I still buy Bonnie Bell and other cartoony lip balms if I like the flavor.

I picked up some Emeraude and Jean Nate around Christmas and am loving them. They remind me of being a kid in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

As for the wearing red lipstick around the house, I do that a lot. I just apply whatever I’m in the mood for.

And, I think the Olsen twins are releasing a new hair product line? I read that somewhere last week, I believe…

    • Isabella Muse

It’ll never be as good as the Walmart one! I don’t care what anyone says haha ;-D

  • Danadoo

I love the cheapie Suave deodorant and always have at least 4 spares under my sink. It just works awesomely with my body chemesty. Now that it’s getting hot out, i apply it under my boobs too..it works great for preventing the dreaded boob sweat syndrome!

  • Danae

Ok, I usually lurk and never comment but I just had to on this one! Dustin, you’re not alone!! I don’t wear deodorant either. I read an article recently that explains it: 2% of the population has a genetic trait that means our bodies are an inhospitable environment for the bacteria that causes underarm odor. Lucky us – all the savings on deodorant over the years means more $$ for makeup!! Lol!!

    • Dusty

Haha! I have a few friends and people I know who don’t wear it and it’s true, nobody notices. I’m a big advocate for bio-individuality – we’re all different! Some of us just “get the vapors” and faint like a good old southern lady when we get hot! LOL!

      • Isabella Muse

and there’s you Dusty that smells like rainbows, fluffy kittens, and the residue of Trent Razor…hehe…!

    • amy

Diet also plays a huge part. If I make sure to drink plenty of water, and more fuits & vegetables, not only do I not smell bad, but I’m often asked what I *am* wearing, LOL! However, when I do slack off, I can smell pretty bad, and then I’ll use… Teen Spirit, LOL! What’s more, is I typically buy it at the 99 cents store, or Dollar Tree.

I’m almost 42, and I’ve been using it since the beginning. Romantic Rose was my scent of choice, until it was DC’d, and when people commented on my scent, I replied, “I smell like Teen Spirit.” It was actually kind of funny in 1991…

      • Isabella Muse

LOL Amy! 🙂 Honestly, people always ask me “What are you wearing?” whenever I wear it! So odd! LOL! I don’t get those kinda compliments when I wear $260 Guerlain perfume but $1.99 deo gets me compliments!

  • Rachel R.

I use men’s deodorant because I’m allergic to the scents in women’s, and I like the spicier and fresher scents used in men’s better. I still use lipsticks and eyeshadows I’ve had for 10+ years (I throw out anything that’s changed color, scent, texture, or has separated).

    • Hanna

      I also use men’s deodorant.
I wear my husbands Amber old spice, we share deodorant, there’s my confession. Haha

I’ve always worn really musky, dark perfumes, and no women’s deodorants really go well with that.
I don’t like fruity or vanilla and I dread that horrible baby powder smell!

  • Holly

I used Love’s Baby Soft up until maybe 2-3 years ago (I am 42).

When I was a teen ager I used baby powder like a normal person would use pressed powder. Now before you say “so what–she’s a goth”, this was like 1989 and goth had not quite reached south Texas soooooo yeah I was just being a weirdo.

    • amy

Look at the list of ingredients of even the most expensive, “luxury” face powder, and you’ll notice the first one listed is TALC-essentially, baby powder.

  • Gisela

When I’m 100% sure that my fiancé won’t catch me doing it, I totally use his facial cream even though I have a whole cupboard filled with my own. He made a big deal about getting Guerlain SOS creme after a nice saleslady at Sephora recommended it to him (he tends to get these HUGE dry, flaky patches when stressed). Curious me lit up “ooooh” but right away he said that I should keep my paws off, otherwise I will probably snatch it and he doesn’t want to have to buy a new jar any time soon.

Uh yeah I just wanted to try it once, but daaaamn that stuff is good. But I would never buy myself a jar because apparently it costs around 90$ here in my country. Obviously I already have too much stuff as it is.

    I’m sorry honey … T___T

  • clive

I haven’t shaved my legs since 1998. I have blonde fine hair down there. I don’t care if anybody looks at all the baby fine hair. I stopped shaving in undergrad college. I am happy to not have to shave my legs. It doesn’t look bad. I also think that shaving is over-rated. Men look at your boobs, not at your legs anyway. I met my current husband with no shaved legs. He says it looks good and he doesn’t notice. I did dump one guy because he made comments about the leg hair but he wanted me to wear lip gloss and picked my clothes out so he was too controlling for me. and old. and fat. and poor. and not as educated as me. and had a kid. and was wierd. The end.

    • Isabella Muse

lol hey, clive, whatever works my dear whatever works 🙂 and screw him! Men who don’t make you feel good about yourself aren’t worth the time!

  • Laura

Does anyone still use tinted Clearasil? It was always too dark for me, but I used to dot it on like a crazy person back in Jr. High. It always reminds me of Adventures in Babysitting!

  • Jennifer Lynn

Oh.. the memories of Baby Soft, Lip smacker in different flavors and Bonnie Bell, Revlon Charlie perfume, Electric Youth perfume of Debbie Gibson. Little Tinker bell kits, peel off nail polish, and stick on earrings. Old Caboodles The 80’s.

      • Holly

I couldn’t afford a real Caboodles so I bought a magenta plastic tackle box instead. Super classy.

  • Tiffaney

I don’t always wear deodorant either. No funky smells here, not a big sweater even thought I live on the coast in the South. I do use dumb blonde shampoo as my face cleanser, one of the few things I can use with my allergies. I also do the cardinal sin and sleep in my make up and if I’m in a rush I just touch up my mascara and go, no one knows….hehe Damn, Muse you’re getting the dirt on everybody…lol!!

  • Wingadings

I used to bite my nails when I had nail polish on. I forget to get new loofahs (apparently you’re supposed to every three or four months). I don’t brush my hair. And I totally forget to take my make-up off sometimes, which is bad because I sleep face down on my pillow- thankfully my SO never tells me I look like a clown!

This might not be a beauty sin so much as beauty horror story: I always had decent skin until after high school where I would get terrible break outs…you know once a month (I’d use my Mom’s Sensodyne toothpaste on the big “crater” sized zits). Mom took me to the Clinique counter and got me on their new acne program. Which burned my face, but I was determined to finish the expensive bottles. Fast forward a few months later and no improvement AND the ache had gotten worse. See it was only on my face originally. But it began to move down my neck, chest and back. It hurt and I couldn’t make expressions. Then Mom took me back to the counter and got the zit zapper to begin using that. Finally when I told Mom that it was moving down my body she took me to the hospital- where we found out I had a staph infection from a bug bite…

So needless to say I don’t trust the make-up or counter people. Again, not sure if it is sin so much as not liking sales people. My Mother spent $500+ to pay for things that not only made my infection worse but we found out later after the infection cleared- I could not even use. My skin had always had a sensitive bent before the breakouts-infection combo- but it’s been worse ever since.

  • kimryan8

omg I stock up on cheap maybelline face powder and use it like dry shampoo in my roots with a huge kabuki brush. Is that bad?

  • Dee

I use Vaseline on my eye area at night. Every night. I also love Bonnie Bell lip smacker in Dr. Pepper.

  • Cheri Morgan

I wear Old Spice deodorant in amber, also the use the body wash and would totally buy aftershave in the same scent. I also wash my face with a combo of mint toothpaste, baking soda and coconut oil. Never a blemish.

  • Eriu

No earth-shattering confessions, but I stopped using razors for women a few years ago after borrowing my husband’s once and got the best, closest shave of my life! If it can shave the curves of a face it can handle knees and ankles just as well. I also have tried several dry shampoos and have found nothing that compares to cheap baby powder for oil absorption. And since my natural hair color is gray, no need to worry if there’s any white residue!

    • Isabella Muse

I’m with you Eriu! I use men’s razors too! they just provide a way closer shave!

      • Nat

Tee-hee – I always liked the call-out to it in “Clueless”. It was almost considered cool to wear that stuff when I was in middle school! 😀

  • Justin

Ok my confession(s) I agree with dusty about deodorant. I do wear it but only very hot weather, it actually really irritates my under arms. I’m really bad about throwing away loofahs.
And finally I look all for Madonna’s Truth or Dare and buy it when I find it (in the clearance section at Walmart or target) it’s like a knock off of Fracas.
Oh and when I was little I bought and wear designer knockoff of CK1 called “U” from the dollar store and had to have my parents pick me up from school for wearing cologne.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL omg J! too cute. They sent you home from school for wearing perfume? Hahaha! those bitches! Didn’t they realize how fabulous you were, even in dollar store perfume 😀

  • Deb

I would take a lighter to my cheapie eyeliner pencils. The flame made them softer & easier to apply.

    • MandyB

I used to leave mine on the dash of my car to soften up 🙂

  • devon

oh man now i’m thinking of more after reading all of these! in high school i started using a lighter to heat up the point of my eyeliner (my bff’s mom taught us that) and my mom found the lighter and i was in troouuuuuble! i hoard bbw christmas scents from years ago (ps marshmallow kiss is TOTALLY frosted snowdrop) and when i was really little i would try my best to clean out the perfume sample bottles and make my own mint perfume with toothpaste and water. good in theory, not good in production.

  • maria

Oh yes, Bonnie Bell-does anyone remember their 1006 toners and the liquid rouge? And how about that musk perfume?
I confess all it’s true-I’m catholic, so I know my punishment 3 lipsticks and 3 eye shadows 🙂

  • Soup

Okay, one more. I have a Stagelight Blue Roses lip crayon from 1982 and a L’Oreal slim lipstick in Opal from 1983 (it’s THE perfect shade of pale fleshy pink w/ a hint of blue). I can’t let them go. I was hoping 3 Custom Colorists could reproduce them…we’ll see. Oh and for the sake of a broken heart I still have my grandmother’s last tube of Coty Watermelon lipstick from decades ago. *sigh*

  • Holly

Stagelight! Sweet grits and gravy! I have banging my head for like 3 months trying to remember that name. Thank you!!!

  • Bonnie S

I have oily skin and I blot with toilet paper when I’m the loo. Best blotting paper ever – just take the two ply, separate it into one-ply, and blot. Never buy expensive blotting papers again!

second confession- sometimes I just am too tired to shower. I use Pond’s cleansing cloths instead and clean up with those. They’re pretty awesome and do a great job. I’ll use a couple – I have tons since I hoard them when they go on sale. They are the best cleansing cloths out there IMHO. And then I do apply deodorant. I love the smell of deodorant – I buy the natural ones from Nature’s Gate, Green Beaver etc. They are a delight to apply. I never wear antiperspirant even though I do sweat – because I am afraid of the health risks.

  • Stephanie

I used to wear frosty blue lipstick and chunky glitter on my face in middle school.

I like the berry Teen Spirit. I also had Bonnie Bell bronzes. I spend a lot of my time smelling my makeup lol
