torrid penny dreadful

Torrid is on a roll with their clothing collections lately! Orphan Black, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and now a Torrid Penny Dreadful Collection? I may or may not be obsessed with this show because Reeves Carney is so damn hot.

The clothing has a dark yet modern goth edge and features subtle scorpions cut outs, a nod to Vanessa, the main character in the show.

Beware, the sizes RUN stupid big. I got a size 2 in the skater dress and it has to go back! Way too big! Also the shirts were super big as well so you might want size down on anything you may be considering as a purchase.

The Torrid Penny Dreadful Collection is available now at torrid.com.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I wouldn’t ever associate this collection with Penny Dreadful but you’re presented me with the opportunity to take this off topic for a moment: what is up with the vanity sizing? It is out of control and makes me hate to shop even more! I’m normally a size zero or size one, but those sizes have suddenly become too big for me. And I’m not talking cheap brands…I have a pair of Gap slacks that I wear for work that are double zero and falling off me.

If you look closely they have little scorpion cut outs, so that’s kinda the nod to Penny Dreadful/Vanessa 😀 I have no idea, vanity sizing makes me laugh. Everything I buy at Torrid is obscenely overlarge. A size 1 is equivalent to like a 5x or something. It’s absurd! I’ll never understand Torrid’s mentality with vanity sizing, let’s be honest, you shop Torrid because you’re a bigger size, I’m comfortable with the fact I’m a short chubby girl and that’s who I am no reason to hide it and say “I’m a size 1” when I’m not LOL. Who are they trying to kid? Plus the sizes are just TOO large. They aren’t true to size at all.

So the collection is adorable and I’ll definitely be sending my lil sis a link.

I would like to state my displeasure with their choice of model, however. Not that she’s not beautiful because she 100% is, but she’s maybe a size 8-10? I understand that in the fashion world an 8-10 is considered plus-sized but, in the real world, she probably couldn’t fit into much of anything from a store like Torrid that caters to the plumper princesses. If you’re shopping online and don’t get the luxury of seeing the garment in person, you should at least be able to see it on someone around your size without any of the special behind the scenes tricks (rubber bands, water bottles, tape, clamps, etc.) so you get an honest depiction of the lines and fit of a garment.

To me, it’s false advertising which, last time I checked, is not only highly frowned upon but very much illegal.

    Just. Stop. Lying to everyone.

Sorry for the rant. This is obviously something about which I’m very passionate haha.

Thank you Andrew. Can I get a big fat sloppy kiss please? 😀 I love you right now haha! I completely agree. Torrid has beautiful models but they are in no way plus size!!!!!! I mean she MIGHT fit into the size 0 or the size 1 but….it’ll swim on her 🙂

Hey, I’m just saying what we’re all thinking haha! I used to do modeling and I’ve worked behind the camera, so I’m all too familiar with the tricks they employ to take clothes made for the average person and make them look like they fit on someone who needs a completely different size. That’s one of the reasons I stopped; that plus I was just scary thin. So thin that my parents threatened to put me in treatment. In fact one of the biggest reasons I aspired to be so thin was seeing so many people get celebrated for being near starvation. I may be showing my age, but this was during the earlier days of the internet before people started embracing natural, healthy bodies.
Anyway, that’s beside the point. The point is that telling a woman who is a size 18 that she’ll magically look like a size 8 just for wearing a certain shirt is crazy. What’s crazier is leading a size 18 woman to believe that she needs to be a size 8 to be beautiful. Nope. Sorry. Beauty isn’t reserved for people who can wear certain clothing sizes; beauty is everywhere in everyone and we should all stop giving a da*n what size clothes we’re wearing. Are you healthy? Are you comfortable? Do you feel beautiful? That’s all that matters.

Sorry for the rant. Stuff like this just gets under my skin. I’m finally looking back at everything I’ve put myself through to try to obtain this ridiculous standard and I’m just like, “WTF?! Why did I torture my body for so many years just to say I wore an extra small?!” Thank you for letting me vent and rant, though; I don’t get to do that with many people and it helps more than you know. Thank you <3

Your rant is awesome 🙂 rant away as much as you like! I know any number of people that would be happy to hear you feel this way now if we can just convince the rest of the world 🙂

I think she looks fabulous in each style. She’s got great coloring that goes with anything!

    • Isabella Muse

yup, agreed, I didn’t think she looked bad at all, was just expressing she isn’t really plus size 🙂
