Makeup and Beauty You Don’t Need

Makeup and Beauty You Don't Need

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty You Don’t Need! I thought I’d do a recap of some makeup misses that you may or may not have read about. This is a collection of items that didn’t quite work out for me that I felt perhaps weren’t worth indulging in, priced too high, or just had performance issues!

Of course, different strokes for different folks I always say! So something I absolutely hate you might absolutely love and vice versa! But I still thought it would be fun to round up some of makeup misses this month.

Take a look!

Tarte Glisten Cheek Stain
I’m still trying to get over the devastation factor on this one. I love Glisten Blush! It’s my favorite shade and I was really excited it was being formulated into a cheek stain! Since Summer is still very much here I had visions of giving my cheeks a gorgeous peachy pink glow. Sadly, all I got with this was a lot of shimmer, not a ton of color, and it looked all kinds of frosty on me.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Blur Primer
YSL’s new primer seemed posivitely dreamy so imagine my surprise, even as a dry skinned girl, how greasy and slick this face primer was! Skip and get their Blur Perfect instead!

Sephora Bright Set Loose Finishing Powder
Sephora’s new “banana” powder seemed an ideal treat for brightening up and setting powder but I wasn’t quite sold out the texture for using under my eyes and would highly suggest going with Besame’s powder instead!

Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Gloss
The fact that Baby Lips was being formulated into a lipgloss took the beauty blog world by storm. Everyone and their mom is recommending you pick up these new glosses but I thought they were sheer, not moisturizing, and just a really mediocre lipgloss at best.

Too Faced Love Flush Long-Lasting Blush
Love Flush is getting a big hooray due to its very, very cute packaging and Tarte fans were hoping this formula was as long wearing as their beloved Amazonian Clay Blush. But no dice! I didn’t like this very much at all and felt the finish was rather flat and the wear pretty short.

Too Faced Love Flush Long-Lasting 16 Hour-Blush
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blush
Neutrogena’s new blushes look cute and pigmented and they get high scores for both but the formula isn’t quite as great as I had hoped for!

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield
Murad scores high for perfecting skin and prepping it well for makeup but the expensive price tag and the fact that it promises to protect skin with an SPF 50 had me lowering the grade on it!

Rimmel Keep Calm and Lip Balm
Rimmel’s Keep Calm and Lip Balm tickled my inner anglophile but these seemed like they’d be more fitting as a child’s toy!

sad about those neutrogena blushes! i saw them at walgreens and was excited for them 🙁
and i totally agree with you on the baby lips glosses. so bad.

    • Isabella Muse

glad someone agrees as everywhere I look it is endless Baby Lips Lipgloss raves 🙁 I thought they were just meh!

  • Renu

Love how honest you are! Thanks for the heads-up about the Blur primer. I did think it looked too “liquidy” for my oily skin, but resolved to try it out. Will stay away. Awww I did want those Rimmel balms for the Keep Calm packaging. Have you tried Ben Nye’s Banana Powder? How did you like it?

  • Alys

I was going to pick up the Neutrogena blush as a cheaper alternative but glad I didn’t. I just am now trying the Tarte amazonian clay blushes, so I’m really excited to see what great reviews it has. As for BabyLips, the name has always creeped me out and I can’t deal with anything on my lips that smells and tastes like sunblock. :/

  • Tracy

It’s funny that you don’t like the YSL primer because until this one I hadn’t found one that I liked. I always tell people on my blog that you can’t take my word for it and to always try products out for themselves. Even if a friend of mine has the same skin type things sometimes work differently. Can’t say that I’ve tried anything that I’ve disliked lately.

    • Isabella Muse

Hey Tracy! Glad you liked that one! It might be better for me in the Winter or so I hope. Right now it’s way too greasy and slick feeling! Different strokes for different folks 😀 I never feel like anything I review should be taken as the last possible word because anyone can go out, buy it, and end up loving it when I don’t. So you never really can’t tell when something someone hates you end up loving 😀

  • Susan

Lipstick queen frog prince did not react with my lips at all. Just translucent (expensive) grease.

  • Khadija

A v true observation, v brief yet v clear and complete review of the products, helps a lot to find good spending of our money. Thanks a lot.

  • sassy

I was so excited about too faced blushes (they are so cute) but I will save money for something even cuter and better! Thanks Muse

    • Isabella Muse

I’d swatch them in store Sassy! You never know you might love 🙂

  • Kiss & Make-up

Wow, okay, if the new YSL primer makes even YOU oily I don’t want to know what it will do to my already oily skin :-O

I won’t lie, I’m very bummed out about the Too Faced Love Flush Long-Lasting Blush 🙁 They’re so prettyyyyy!

    • Isabella Muse

I do suggest swatching them in stores chica ya never know you might love!

  • Nathalie

Thanks for sharing your list! I have been on the fence about many of these items and now I shall skip. 🙂 Benefit Cosmetics’ mascaras are a big miss for me. Everyone raves about them, but their spiky wands are so uncomfortable and their formulas do nothing for me (smudge and/or do not hold curls).

    • Isabella Muse

my pleasure! Yea, you’re not alone, benefit mascara in many cases are a miss for me too!

  • JJ24

Baby Lips gloss are a total fail for me, I feel like they actually suck moisture out of my lips. Also the MUG foiled shadows as they crease and fade like crazy on my oily lids no matter the primers or bases or how many I use.

  • Genevieve

I think it’s honest reviewers like you Isabella that warns us about products that simply don’t work and saves us money. Thank you so much.

  • Pamela

HATE the Baby Lips! Didn’t seem one bit moisturizing. I so agree with you. Nothing, but nothing, beats Dior Lip Glow.

  • Courtney

I honestly only by Baby Lips stuff for my 8 year old. I guess since I’m an artist at Sephora, I’m kind of snobby about lip balms like that because I constantly have a Fresh one on me. The YSL primer looks like glitter hair gel and honestly, feels like a greasy mess. The Too Faced blushes don’t strike me as a must have either. The Tarte stain sticks were never my thing but, shockingly, I’ve never tried the blush in Glisten. I will have to grab that next haul. I don’t like primers that feel like silicone so the Murad one was not my jam, however, the client who wants the blurring primer and a high SPF, tends to love it, especially on mature skin.

  • Katherine T.

Oh, it’s too bad the Too Faced Love Blushes didn’t work for you:( I got mine in I Will Always Love You ( peach with gold shimmer) and it’s gorgeous!! I compared my swatch with yours, and I don’t know if there’s a QC issue, but mine has beautiful gold shimmer/sheen while yours does more muted and flat. You can try layering a gold highlighter underneath it. I got a sample of that Murad Invisible Blur Primer and hated it — it is so heavy and siliconey, ugh! I felt like it was smothering my pores. And it made my makeup look flat and un-natural, like it was sitting on top of my skin. The L’Oreal blur one felt the same

    • Isabella Muse

There is a real possibility of that Katherine! I notice some Tarte QVC stuff is vastly different from what Tarte sells at Sephora etc….! I’ll have to swatch the blushes at Sephora and see if it’s better 😀 Aw sorry to hear, I liked the Murad but just wasn’t convinced it was an end all for SPF!

  • Jeanine McAuliffe

So sad about the Tf blushes. Glad I didn’t waste my time or money tho but that heart packaging is adorable!

    • Isabella Muse

Don’t give up! You might wanna swatch them anyway in store Jeanine, you never know you might like ’em!

  • Traci

Yes, I was very disappointed in the Rimmel Keep Calm and Lip Balms. I was excited to find them on clearance at Walmart, but they were not even worth the dollar each that I paid for them. I couldn’t get past the smell, and they were not moisturizing 🙁

I really like the Baby Lips lip balms, but don’t plan to try the Baby lips gloss.

  • devon

there have been a bunch of things that i have tried and returned lately–the new eva mendes line at walgreens/duane reade called circa…their mascara is awful. you swipe it on, and when you go to swipe on again, it pulls the product right off the ends of your lashes. the disney dare to dream Pocahontas highlighter was also disappointing as left NO slight shimmer or glow on the skin. UD’s naked powder foundation made it’s way back to sephora too–even though the texture was lovely, there was no coverage and it oxidizes like crazy!

  • Lori

I bought 3 of the Baby Lips glosses…for my 10 year-old. She LOVES them, and they’re so light they’re appropriate for her. Lol.
