Does Knowing About Holiday Makeup Collections Ahead of Time Ruin Things for You?

Holiday makeup

I was talking to Dustin Hunter today about how technically it really isn’t Fall yet. With weather ranging in the 90’s and humidity thick enough to cut with a knife I should know better but lord knows I’ve been decorating my home with a ton of Fall stuff the last few days and there’s no end in sight. Fall seems like it goes by a little too quickly for me. Maybe it’s because I love the season but for me it just passes by very quickly. So, of course, I like to get my Fall decor up as early as possible and enjoy it as much as I can before the long hard Winter arrives.

Funny thing as when I should be rejoicing in Fall makeup collections I’m more about racing around and preparing for Holiday 2015 Makeup Collections. Funnier still is the fact that so many Instagram accounts have been posting Holiday Sneak Peeks since as early as the end of July.

Ouch!

So I was wondering, Does Knowing About Holiday Makeup Collections Ahead of Time Ruin Things for You?

I have to say, yes, it does. I like hearing about new collections and I leave teasers but knowing about an entire Holiday Collection in the Summer just ruins things for me completely. It really takes the excitement and anticipation out of new makeup releases for me.

It’s kinda like finding your Christmas presents in the closet and looking through them all before the 25th. So when the 25th does arrive and you’re sitting with your family unwrapping your gift there’s just no magic, no excitement, no surprise…

The same holds true for Holiday Collection info that circulates in the Summer. It’s fun to find out about the releases but as we get closer and closer to the Holidays it seems like there is less and less to be excited about as I already saw the collection.

Sadness!

What do you think?

Do you like knowing ahead of time what’s to come or does knowing about holiday makeup collections ahead of time ruin it for you?

Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. #NOPE! for me it’s like Christmas comes early with little sprinkles of makeup wonderfulness for a few months. I love knowing whats coming out ahead of time so I can really think if I NEEEED to have something, or I want it because of the “holiday exclusive” buzz.

    • Isabella Muse

True, there are benefits to knowing ahead of time as you can budget yourself as well as contemplate what might sell out and what will stick around for a while 😀

  • Dee

All of my fall decor is up too! My favorite time of year.

It doesn’t ruin it for me in the least. Something to look forward to!

  • amy

I just want it to be available within 1-2 weeks of knowing about it. I don’t care for the manufactured hype; I don’t stray too much from a handful of brands, so the budgeting isn’t that hard, especially around the Holidays, since I really only go for palettes, and I can estimate what they’ll cost within a few dollars.

  • Courtney

Hmm. This is a double edged sword for Me. I do love perusing the blogs and social media about upcoming holiday collections early but I don’t like the idea about how corporate greedy it all seems. 🙁 I guess I kind of see it as companies so relentlessly shoving stuff down our throats earlier and earlier in the year to make more money off consumers. Is it crazy I think that way?

    • Isabella Muse

No, not at all. I think that companies use social media in a major way to push collections at people really hard. It’s a great way to gain a follower and fan base but it can be very overwhelming!

  • Tonya

I prefer to know! Regardless of when you find out, it’s exciting! Then you can make your wish list & make sure you get the items that are absolute favorites versus buying some, then better sets come out and you either miss out or end up spending way more than you should. I do 90% of my beauty shopping between Nov & Jan so always appreciate knowing! (Keep those sneak peeks & releases coming!! :D)

  • Cici

It doesn’t ruin it for me. I actually like knowing ahead of time what the holiday collections will look like because then I know for sure if I want to skip certain eyeshadow palettes or lipsticks etc. I would hate saving up my money for the holiday makeup and then find out on that day that the quality may be pretty bad. I like it when the holiday collections come out early because it gives me time to read reviews from trusted beauty bloggers and then I can really decide if I also like the packaging and all that jazz

  • Angie

No. I’m not made of money so I need to take time to save up and budget for stuff. And really take time to make sure I want something and it’s not impulse.

    • Laura

I totally agree with this. I like to plan on what I think is worth buying and staying on budget. Plus knowing ahead of time let’s you save $ up instead of spending it on something else.

  • dia

Nah, it lets me plan ahead. For instance, I was going to get a face oil, but I saw a nice Josie Maran set coming up that has a full size face oil, so I’ll hold out for that.

It’s a little bit of both for me. I recall all of the excitement & anticipation of the Sephora Holiday Catalog arriving in early November in years past and the slow drawn out way I’d go through it, trying to savor all of the surprises on each page individually before I’d flip the page to another set of all new awesome surprises on the next page. It made what could’ve been like a 5 minute skim into a nice experience that I’d slowly savor over coffee, tea or cocoa when I got home from work that night that it arrived in the mail. So now with the early reveals, it makes looking forward to any holiday catalogs less of a surprise experience and kind of kills the joy of it. My relaxation ritual to usher in the holiday season & winter is gone, replaced instead by too many photos & reviews too early on. It’s almost like why even bother having “special limited collections” when they’re going to spend 6 months plastered all over all forms of social media? ***HOWEVER, I can understand why some folks might like to know in advance what’s coming out & when so they know better how to budget their $$ to save for what they want. This whole debate seems to me as if it’s a bit like the difference in those folks who prefer to learn the sex of their unborn baby before it’s born versus those folks who prefer to wait until after the child is born to find out what they had. But, it’s a good debate/question nonetheless.

Like others have said, not in the slightest. It helps me plan – the Fall/Winter collections are always my favorites, and even though I want to BUY ALL THE THINGS I can’t. So the more I know about what’s coming, the more I know if I can buy now, or I need to save some resources for later.

That, and I’m of an age where I can’t remember….anything. So I tend to forget about them anyway. Which means I get a second pleasant surprise when I see them again :).

  • Amber

I love to find out ahead of time since I’m usually already trying to save my spending money to buy holiday sets. Don’t get me wrong. I love fall. It’s my favorite season and I even have fall colors in my living room because I love the warmth of it. But knowing what’s coming for the holidays is an extra little incentive to start saving towards my holiday splurge lol! And I do have to save for it since my oldest son has a birthday in oct., my daughter’s is in november and my youngest son’s is in december. And then there’s christmas shopping for them. I need to plan what I want and what I can afford lol! Keep the sneak peeks coming.

  • Kari

YES!!!! it does, I love surprises so knowing everything ahead is quite sad, at least for me. Actually I got the feeling that every year the releases are earlier isn’t? You are still savoring your summer makeup and you have already the fall makeup sitting in your counter waiting to be used and in fall you already want to use the winter one…
By the way I love your gifts analogy

  • Karen

I like hearing about the upcoming Holiday collections in the Fall. That way it gives me time to consider which ones I really want to spend my money on. I don’t want to get caught up in the “holiday craze” and spend more just because it’s Holiday time.

  • Michele

I read your post & smiled the whole way thru. Finally, a kindred spirit who understands the need I have to do my fall decorating early so that I can really enjoy it. Fall always goes by way too quickly. It was 108 last week in SoCal but I turned on the air & went to town decorating. Thankfully, the temps have cooled down some this week. As far as holiday newness, I think July is a bit too early but September reveals aren’t bad. I do need to budget, so it really helps to see what’s coming up. It great to coordinate what I’d like to have w/the Friends & Family sales, too. By the time Thanksgiving gets here, I’m in full holiday/family/entertainment/kid stuff mode, so there is precious little time to linger over catalogues and websites. Getting my goodies early allows me to enjoy the holidays without worrying that I have to go here & there and order this and that or avoid the disappoinment that something I really wanted has sold out. I stash my treasures and open them slowly, trying everything out over a period of weeks. This works out really well in one way because January is kind of slow with not much going on. Perfect time to open a new goodie & play.

    • Isabella Muse

haha Michelle! YES! Fall seems to past by really quick so might as well enjoy it while you can! I notice FF sales come earlier and earlier each year so I end up having a majority of my holiday shopping done by October. Too True! Jan is always slow for newness and a great time to enjoy the Holiday stuff we hauled 😀 Happy Fall (unofficially haha)!

  • Iris

I prefer to hear about the upcoming holiday collection so I can get a shopping list ready for them. So many decisions and delicious choices.

  • Emily

I like knowing about holiday collections ahead of time. I’d hate to go overboard on spending if something comes out of the blue and it gives me time to think if there’s anything I really need ahead of time.

  • Julie

The first day of fall (9/21) is when I am officially ready for ALL new Philosophy holiday scents to be available!! :0)

  • Lisa C

I’m torn! Like you, I feel like the surprise and awe is taken away by knowing ahead, but then it’s nice to plan on where you want to lay those hard earned $$ at too! But there are sometimes when they come up with last minute surprises, so that’s nice!

  • jaz

I would rather wait until fall actually starts to worry about holiday collections- so late September, early october

  • genevieve

Well seeing that in Australia our seasons are the opposite of yours it can be difficult buying new autumn colours when we are going into spring. Luckily here in Melbourne, autumn lasts for awhile and yes, it is my favourite season too.
I think previewing the holiday palettes too early does take the gloss off things. The hard part is when the holiday palettes are limited editions and when you are on holidays, ready to browse and purchase them, they are out of stock….. So that would be oh so tough.

  • Maggie

It makes it better and easier for me. I like to get my budgeting and shopping done ahead of time so during the holidays, I can wear what I bought and budgeted for and just enjoy the times and be in the moment.

  • Lynn

I like knowing. Like someone else said, it hekps me decide if I really “NEED” it or if I am just really feeling “pressure” since it is a “limited” or holiday item. I guess I have been in the “dark” I haven’t seen any of the 2015 Holiday collections yet. Hints maybe (although I can’t recall what they were) but not entire collections. I like fall as well.. Spring and Fall… the weather is wonderful those times of year.

  • Maria

It doesn’t ruin it for me. I like to plan ahead and see what I like and don’t. What I hate is when I missed out on something :/ haha
