Urban Decay 24 7 Waterline Eye Pencil

So it is hot and humid in New York which means it is a perfect time to test the Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil. Because what better time to test an eyeliner created exclusively for waterline use then in the hot, soup-y weather as you wanna see how it’ll withstand not only the heat but also how it holds up on the most moist place of your entire eye yes?

Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil ($20) are a new and permanent five shade collection of 24/7 Eyeliner Pencils that were developed for use on the inner rim of the waterline with a creamy, demi-matte finish that promises a waterproof all day wear. These launch on September 12th on Urban Decay’s website with the Urban Decay Holiday 2015 Collection.

I want to tell you all about how Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil blew my mind but sadly they really didn’t. I love the idea of a waterproof eye pencil created exclusively for waterline use. A long time ago Tarte created their inner rim and later on re-invented it as the Tarte Amazonian Clay Tightlining Eyeliner (which was sadly never really as a good as the original formula) but I can’t really think of many brands that are out there creating pencils for waterline use. They really should though right? It’s kinda a lacking area in the beauty world. I will say the longest and best wear I ever got from an eye pencil on my waterline is Mally Beauty Evercolor Automatic Waterproof Liner. To this day I swear by her black Evercolor Eyeliner for use on my inner water line.

Of course, there are a million other long wearing formulas I love as well such as Urban Decay’s Perversion and L’Oreal’s Infallible Gel Lacquer Liner both of which wear quite nicely on my inner rim.

But fact of the matter is all these eyeliners have a very creamy, gel-like consistency that won’t work for everyone particularly those prone to oily skin. So of course, something drier is in order for the most moist or wettest area of your eye and that’s where Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencils come into play but that’s also where they fail.

The idea is a good one BUT…they made them just a touch too dry and a bit too dense to fully work well on the inner rim. They swatch very roughly on skin with a very dry consistency that’s matte in finish. I feared they wouldn’t work on my waterline but I wasn’t prepared to give up hope as I swatched them on my arm. It takes time and patience to get the best intensity as the color just doesn’t flow well due to the density and dryness of the pencil. I find myself going around and around my inner rim to get the pencil “wet” and flowing. They just have a knack for dragging on my inner rim as I apply without producing a ton of color. Sure, they swatch intensely but getting that amount of color on my waterline proves an obstacle. I feel I have to do several passes before color shows up and at the point does it’s kinda sheer. The wear isn’t terribly good either as I can get about three hours in before they just break up and separate around my inner rim before fading away.

Dare I say if you have oily lids you might just want to use them as a regular eyeliner as they’ll likely wear strongly on your upper lash line!

I likely won’t be giving up Perversion for inner rim use for Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil. Perversion works great on my waterline and provides a solid blacker than black finish with a fairly long six hour wear on my waterline. I expected longer wear and a superior formula from 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil but it didn’t quite grab me sadly.

Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil launch next week on urbandecay.com.

Think you’ll try them?

my pleasure Daisy. A bit too dry for me sadly! I think it’s hard creating a waterline formula that’s equally creamy and long wearing 🙁

I LOVE the colors but it really smears. Blink to hard and you have it below your bottom lashes. I was so excited when I purchased these. But it is very hard to keep it where you want it. I am extremely disappointed. I have stayed faithful to it for 5 months. I think I need to move on. I will sure miss the colors.

  • Melissa

Noooooo … This makes me so sad! But thanks for preventing me from spending possibly $100 and buying all five 😉

    • Isabella Muse

Don’t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try one maybe but don’t buy all of them, you’ll be disappointed 🙁

  • Phyrra

I couldn’t get some of the colors to deposit color on my waterline. It was frustrating. I end up using gel liner on my waterline since that lasts better for me than anything else.

  • Liz

Boo, I was hoping for good things! I’m an oily skinned gal and might give one a go just to try them. I wonder if you warmed them up with a quick blast from your blow dryer maybe they would apply better. I’m tempted to try.

I, too, have good luck with Perversion on my waterline so I’ll just stick with using that. Too bad these are too dense/dry. This was a good concept and I agree with you, Muse, that pencils designed for the waterline are sorely lacking in the makeup universe.

    • Isabella Muse

It really is a product line that isn’t readily available across brands, I’m surprised someone hasn’t jumped on the idea at this point but I guess tackling the waterline is hard! I’m good with perversion too ;-D at least that wears long and strong!

  • Maggie

Muse–I’m going to swatch these in person in hopes that they’ll do on my eyelids. Eyeliner meltdown is sadly a normal thing for me.

aw sorry girl! But think about how young you’ll look well into your old age 😀 Oily skin rocks when you think about it that way 😀

  • Cindy

When I was a kid in the 80s we took eyeliner pencils we bought from the flea market and held them in the flame over the stove to get them soft! HAHA! Wouldn’t spend $20 on an eye pencil to do that. I rarely use eyeliner on my waterline now but I do use it outside – my lids aren’t oily but I do like pencils that don’t budge if I put them under my eye. Wonder if these would work for that.

I have a wet, teflon waterline and have never found a pencil that can hold up more than a 5 min to 2 hours on my waterline. I did try your gel pot eyeliner trick and that holds up longer but not bulletproof. I will have to check out the Mally one though. I wonder if these UD ones can hold up on my oily lids.

    • Melissa

Try the Kandee Johnson trick – use the pencil on your waterline and then pat a black shadow on top (or whatever color). I get monstrously long wear when I do it that way, though if I’m not careful I also get eyeshadow in my eye …

  • Twirishlady

I’m curious if I would have luck with these. I have super watery eyes so my waterline tends to be “moist” (terrible word!!) already which might make these dry liners work ok on me. I might have to check one out.

  • T

I agree that Mally makes the best liner for the waterline hands down!! I use her Matte Shadow Stick in Black and Brown for the inner rims and waterline and adore them!! Best ever!! The only other liner that has come close was Smashbox Shadow Liner to-Go. I bought backups of that and love it!! Glad I saw this review before spending my money!! Thank you!!

  • Scivvy

This is so disappointing! BUT! Have you tried the *new* Bareminerals eyeliners? They are amazing on the waterline. I always have trouble with my top waterline as i guess it is, well…watery. I have found very few that will show up. It’s been Buxom and now the new BM Round the Clock liners. Love them!!

  • Nataile Brown

So sad because I had high-hopes for these. I have super watery eyes and am still looking for something that will last for me. Although, Peversion does last the longest. Thanks for the honest review. 🙂

  • Crystal

aw that’s too bad… the only waterline liner that works better than the others is the essence gel pencil eyeliner. there is a learning curve to it though, as it is ‘gel’ it sets instantaneously, and another pass will remove what’s already on the skin/line. but if ‘warmed’ up it deposits good pigmentation.

  • Cat

This was a bust for me. Just picked it up yesterday in the shade “Rail.” I wish I had done some googling on it before. It didn’t really last any longer than my other UD liners or the kohl pencil I generally use. Back to Sephora it will go! 🙁
