Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Muddy Puddles Perfume Oil Review

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Muddy Puddles Perfume Oil

I’m not a chocolate person. I mean, around this time of the year when Halloween is so near and all the drugstores have piles and piles of snack size chocolate bars I can honestly say I’m not terribly tempted by any of it. When I was a child my mom would pick me up from school and once a week she’d let me go to a small coffee shop near my school and purchase a single bar of anything I wanted from rows and rows and of candy bars and chocolates. Typically this was our Friday afternoon ritual and for some reason it’s a childhood memory that sticks out in my head more than others.

I remember at that time Hersey’s Chocolate Bars, Kitkats, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups tasted so incredibly good. But I’m not sure if recipes have changed over the years or my palate isn’t quite what it used to be but chocolate just doesn’t taste as wonderful as it did when I was a child.

I also dislike the smell of chocolate. As a person who enjoys fragrance and loves burning candles and wearing perfume that smells like cupcakes, pumpkins, and anything else foody you’d think I’d love a chocolate scented fragrance or even a chocolate scented candle. But nope, I typically skip chocolate candles or fragrances. Although I do admit to having a huge addiction to Guerlain Gourmand Cocquin.

Recently, the Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs Lilith Birthday Perfume Oils released and with it a hot cocoa scented perfume oil called Muddy Puddles. I dunno why but I decided I’d give in and try this out for myself and I’m happy I did because I quite love it.

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Muddy Puddles Perfume Oil is a limited edition oil released on the Lab’s Trading Post and created by Ted for his daughter’s birthday. It’s inspired by a rainy day, splashing in muddy puddles and coming home to a warm mug of hot chocolate made by mom.

On first sniff, in the bottle, this smells like raw brownie batter. I admit it was too chocolate-y for me and I kinda curled my nose up. I mean it smells tasty even delicious but did I want to wear it on my skin and smell like brownies all day?

The first application you really get deep, dark chocolate. I burn boiling water so I’ve never attempted to make hot chocolate using actual chocolate! I’m a hot chocolate packet kinda gal. But my mom makes homemade hot chocolate and it is pretty amazing. Wet, on my skin, this perfume oil smells exactly like the melted chocolate my mom uses to create hot chocolate.

As it settles and dries down the chocolate swirls around with hints of marshmallow and this is in fact where it becomes a true hot chocolate fragrance. It just evokes the spirit of fluffy marshmallow that are slightly gooey and bobbing around a creamy, hot cup of cocoa. This isn’t a Fall fragrance for me but it does bring to mind Christmas and cold Winter nights or the special day I spend with my mom and sister each year at Rockefeller Center to see the tree and follow it up with lunch at Serendipity 3.

As it dries down further it becomes kinda sexy smelling. Chocolate, fluffy marshmallows, but totally wearable and edible! It’s a true to life hot chocolate scent that surprisingly wearable. I think wet it can be very chocolate-y but it settles into a very soft chocolate marshmallow fragrance that’s delicious.

There’s so much magic in this fragrance so if you’d a gourmand fragrance fan I’d highly recommend checking it out. Ted captured the spirit of hot chocolate beautifully in this special fragrance.

I keep wanting to buy BPAL but I look at the prices and then skip it. Are the bottles larger than they look? They look like the Fortune Cookie Soap ones.

Also, are the bath oils or hair gloss any good?

    • Isabella Muse

there are 5ml or 0.16 oz. Fortune Cookie Soap has 1 and 2 dram bottles. The 1 dram bottle holds 3.69 ml and the 2 dram holds 7.3 ml of perfume. Bpal’s bottle are physically shorter and chubbier in size but they hold less or more depending on the size you are going for from Fortune Cookie Soap. I haven’t tried the hair gloss but the bath oils are lovely you have to be careful though as they make the tub very slippery! 🙂 Also, these oils are stronger than Fortune Cookie Soap, they are concentrated so a little dab or two is plenty for a nice linger and throw. The sillage on 100% of the Lab’s oils is incredible. It’s a high quality product.

my pleasure!!!!!!!!! 🙂 Honestly, I realize 25 is a lot and there are many more reasonable etsy sellers but believe me I tried lots and bpal is one of the best out there! You’re paying for excellent quality!

Kimm, you can also buy “Imps” sample sizes of most BPAL scents for $4.00 and even those are so concentrated that they last for ages! I have a huge collection of those and they always throw in free ones when you order 🙂 Might be a way to try before you make a commitment to the pricier full-size bottles.

excellent advice Amanda! But sadly the LE fragrances are not available as imps 🙁 just keep that in mind when ordering!

This is totally off the subject of BPAL, but since you mentioned how good chocolate USED to taste, you are right. The type of cacao used now is a different breed coming from a different species of cocoa plant than what was used years ago. It has a different flavor, and the products made from it taste different now than they used to.

I’m glad you mentioned this Kellly because sometimes I totally thing it is me. Chocolate used to taste so much better when I was younger. Nowadays it’s kinda bitter and leaves an after taste in your mouth. It isn’t as good as it once was and isn’t terribly appealing to me in the least. I do however, have a major downfall for Cadburys 🙂 but UK ones not the ones made here in the US! 🙂

    Dear Scent Twin,
I was not even considering this one. Now it lives in my cart.
Your friend in perfume driven poverty,

LOL Hi Brooke! 😀 I got my SS order and loves it. P.S. If you love BBW Winter Candy Apple this is so for you! It’s spot on but stronger!
