Sephora Jem and The Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror5

Sephora Jem and The Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror ($18) is a new limited edition compact mirror inspired by the Jem and the Holograms movie and cartoon that Sephora recently released with their Sephora Jem and the Holograms Makeup Collection.

As you know from my past review I wasn’t exactly pleased with this collection. It seemed like a rushed release with very little time or effort put into the making of it and that unfortunately extends to this compact mirror!

It took a while to come in stock but earlier this week it finally did become available for purchase so I quickly snatched up my Sephora Jem and The Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror and stalked the mailman until he delivered it to my door because, you know, Jem and stuff.

I haven’t yet seen the movie but I heard it was a hot mess and hey, after watching the trailer I could have told you that! The writing was on the wall as they say. But I thought for sure that the fact Sephora was creating a Jem inspired makeup collection would makeup for the fact the movie killed my childhood. Unfortunately, Sephora’s Collection actually proceeded to dig the knife even deeper starting with the terrible, no good, very bad Jem and the Holograms Eyeshadow Palette.

Jem and The Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror

I think some of the past limited edition mirrors that Sephora has done was some of their best wort and the recent Sephora Disney Reigning Beauties Mirror Collection was pretty nice as well. But sadly that quality doesn’t extend to the Jem Compact Mirror.

This is shaped like a gold vinyl record with Jem’s signature as well as a nod to Sephora with a lightning bolt in the corner of the palette. One side is a regular mirror and the other side is magnified.

I think the first thing that shocked me about the mirror was the size. It’s quite small and isn’t as heavy as some of the Disney mirrors. The second thing that not only shocked but disappointed me was the fact the art work isn’t even painted on the mirror, it’s simply a sticker, slapped onto the face plate of the mirror. Given time it’ll likely peel off with time and that saddens me.

So, in the end I think it’s a nice collector’s piece but it sure is rather sad that it isn’t better quality.

The Sephora Jem and The Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror and the entire Jem and the Holograms Makeup Collection is available now at Sephora.com.

I’ve been thinking about getting the mirror but have been waffling (I bought everything else in the collection, though). I thought the sticker top looked cheap, but I also thought it would be shielded by a clear dome like the Disney mirrors. If it’s not…yeah, I think I’ll probably pass on this. I can acquire more solidly built mirrors at Hot Topic for a third of the price, with better designs (they had a really cool Peter Pan one made to look like the face of Big Ben with Peter and the Darlings’ silhouettes flying in front of it). It’s a real bummer though because I love Jem so much and was hoping for some quality grown-up merch. I guess we’re all still waiting for it to get the proper treatment it deserves.

ohhh gotta check out that hot topic one Victoria! I guess I’d rec this for collector’s and considering you have the other items it might be worth getting (but that’s only me, I have a touch of OCD there lol! Because I’d have a hard time owning it all and missing one piece). But basically it’s kinda crappy. Just a gold compact with a sticker :-/

I came real close to buying this, so glad I waited and didn’t. Had high hopes it would be a quality compact mirror. 🙁

That’s really crappy, Sephora! As Victoria mentioned in the above post, Hot Topic has lots of super cute, high quality mirrors for like 6 bucks, i just got a cheshire cat one and i love it!

Hi Ms. Muse! I’m sorry you’ve been generally disappointed with Sephora’s Jem and the Holograms collection. I don’t know if temporary tattoos are your cup of tea but it seems that Flash Tattoos have their own Hologram product. Hopefully this might make things brighter! ^_^
