Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil2

The Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil ($7.99) is a new matte eyeliner pencil that launched with the Maybelline Spring 2016 Collection in a single shade of black. This one might remind you of the Tarte Amazonian Clay Tightlining Eyeliner which was available over 8 years ago from the brand but made a recent re-appearance in the Tarte Beauty in the Basics Set. I remember owning the original (the newer one was dry and dense) and loving it due to the small size which worked great for waterline and tight lining work.

So the idea of Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil isn’t a new one but it is a great one as the micro tip is just as small as Tarte’s version and is awesome for super precise application on your waterline.

Let’s take a look!

Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil

The Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil (0.0035oz) is a super slim mechanical eyeliner pencil that has a flat, micro-tip point. Honestly, I wouldn’t say this is the best point or pencil for doing a regular eyeliner look but for more precise work around the waterline or upper waterline this is great in my opinion. That’s not to say you can’t use it in regular eyeliner looks, you can, it’s just that it has a flat top and if you prefer more of a precise point for lining this doesn’t give it to you. That flat top is pretty genius for the waterline though as it is quite small and fits perfectly on either your lower or upper waterline plus it glides on fairly easily in this area. The point is a 1.8 mm tip which is a smidge larger than Hourglass’s recently released Mechnical Gel Eyeliner.

It is a drier, denser pencil with a matte finish but it doesn’t drag during application and applies quite easily. It’s a very intense blacker than blacker formula and even more matte than the recently released L’Oreal Infallible Matte Matic Mechanical Eyeliner and even more so than Urban Decay Black Velvet. The color holds very, very well on the waterline and doesn’t easily fade plus pigmentation is excellent. According to Maybelline it’ll wear for 24 hours straight! I wouldn’t say it would wear 24 hours on the waterline but I can get about six hours or so here and around on my lashline it wears for a solid 12 hours without fading or smearing. If you have oily lids you should get on very well with this formula as it’ll likely wear quite well for you.

Problem….

This has a great formula, excellent wear, terrific pigmentation, but it’s actually quite small at 0.0035 oz for $7.99 plus the packaging is faulty. I made the mistake of twisting it up too much to take a photo and it would not swivel down which resulted in me having to break off a slice so I could replace the cap. When you get it, word to the wise, don’t swivel it up TOO much!

Despite faulty packaging the Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil is very nicely formulated! I just wish it was a little cheaper but aside from the packaging and the price I’m loving it.

Tried it?

I got it and tried it for the first time yesterday. It worked mostly well but transferred from my upper water line to my lower water line. I guess it’s not the worst problem but I hadn’t intended to use it on my lower lash line yesterday. It was easy to apply though and I have a hard time with eyeliner in general, especially in my water line. My eyes just want to close when I get that close with a foreign object. Lol

    • Isabella Muse

oh no sorry! Mine set well, no transfer issues thankfully and no smearing! 🙂 haha, I think we all have reason to twitch when anything gets too close to our eyes! Normal reflex, even after year’s of using makeup it never goes away!

  • Adrienne

Thanks for the wonderful review and close up image of the product tip. I wear contact lenses and have yet to master waterlines and liquid eyeliners and I have to e very careful about what I put that close to my eyes and when I apply it. In Ohio we have 2 additional colors a brown and a grey but only the black was in the display the other two colors were already on the wall.

    • Isabella Muse

no kid!? I didn’t see those. The display here only had black, black, and more black! I wish it had brown I’d have picked it up! Hope this works for you 🙂

  • KimMWC03

I saw brown and grey at my local Rite-Aid too. I almost bought the black one but one YouTuber said that it was rough on her waterline.

    • Isabella Muse

sad panda! No grey or brown here just black, black, black. No problems on my waterline! I expected it to be dense, it’s def matte, not particularly creamy, but it isn’t rough thankfully!

Oilier lids? I’m on it girl!! I’ve tried the Hour Glass Mechanical , Marc Jacob, Urban decay , and ItCosmetics. It’s a never ending search for that HG liner that won’t budge. ItCosmetic lasted the longest on me which is 4 hrs lol then it fades. I heard the new Lancôme is amazing.

I have oily lids, and tried many, many eyeliners. I recommend the new Sephora Contour MATTE Gel Eyeliners -they are like a tattoo! I can get +17 hrs of wear. BH Cosmetics Waterproof Party Girl Waterproof Gel Eyeliners are more shimmery and are great too. Bare Minerals Round-the Clock Intense Cream Glide ones are really good too. Sadly, none have lasted on my waterline, but they do great on my upper lid and tightline.

  • Jordan

I got the Tarte EmphasEYES expecting it to be like the other tightliner and I hate it! It’s nothing like the old one. It won’t twist back down either. I’m trying to use it up because I hate to waste it, but ugh.

    • Isabella Muse

Ah someone who remembers that tightliner, I can’t remember the name though can you!? I HATED the new version! It was dry, dense, and awful! I tossed it! It hurt like hell to apply!

        • Isabella Muse

Inner rim liner is actually still fairly new, It was something else I THINK! I have to look through my old posts, I remember reviewing it!

  • Katherine T.

(sigh)I’ve tried many, many eye liners, and nothing seems to last on my waterline for more than 1 hour, but if I catch a sale, I might give this a try. Hope it doesn’t join my graveyard

  • Quinctia

Hmm…I think I remember reviews of the Hourglass one not wanting to retract, either.

I’m disappointed that the packaging is hot pink and the liner is NOT hot pink. I might be the only weirdo that glanced at the first pic and went “yay, Maybelline made a matte hot pink liner”!

Sounds like it’s worth checking out, though, especially since it’s not too hard to catch a Maybelline product on sale.

    • Isabella Muse

I never tried the Hourglass one, at the time I remember thinking it was a little too expensive to indulge. Haha true true! That would be awesome!

  • Joan

Tried the Trish Mcevoy gel liner. Expensive but willing to pay for a lasting tightliner. Great under you have to sharpen it. I used their own sharpener, hard to get a point again and the wood surrounding the gel scratched my eye very badly
I’ll try the Maybelline today !
    Thanks Muse !!!!!!!

    • Isabella Muse

oh no Joan ouch! be careful! Let me know what you think of this one! My pleasure 🙂

  • Nikki

This is exactly…even the no twist down mechanism…like the Kate mechanical gel pencil! Much lower price point (maybe not in Japan…?) but seriously, this is it exactly!

  • Tabitha

Ok… Maybe I’m just an idiot but I picked this up because it’s matte, long wearing, very dark and… Supposedly “always sharp.” Even the photo on the packaging shows a nice sharp tip. So why does this twist up as a flat top eyeliner that you obviously can’t sharpen??? Lol

  • Toni DeLaney

I have worn eyeliner 45 years. I don’t even need a mirror to put it on. However, the new skinny breaks and breaks. It broke a couple of times and fell in my eye. I thought it was a bad pen so I bought another one and the same thing happened. I’m on my third one now. If it happens this time, I’m out and will have to say bye-bye to a product that t have been very fond of for almost 50 years.
