Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation Review & Swatches

Physicians Formula Cushion Makeup

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation SPF 50 ($16.95) is a new, permanent cushion foundation with a weightless mineral formula that promises to blur fine lines, correct visible imperfections, and give skin a airbrushed finish while protecting it with an SPF 50 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen.

Not since It Cosmetics CC+ Veil Beauty Fluid Foundation has a cushion makeup made such a great impression on me.

I really like this one!

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation is one of two drugstore cushion foundations you’ll run into this Spring. The other is the new L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation which I liked well enough but if I had to choose one I’d go with Physicians Formula for sure!

Cushion makeup have trended in Korea for the last three or so years and arrived on our shores earlier last year at department stores. I’m happy to report this Spring we’ll be seeing more and more of them at the drugstore.

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation sadly arrives in three color selections. Unfortunately, Physicians Formula has yet to lift its “one shade fits all” mentality so not everyone is going to fit into their Light, Light/Medium, and Medium shade range. But if you are lucky enough (their light or light/medium tends to be a perfect match for me) to fit into one of those three shades you’re in for a treat.

This cushion makeup arrives in a cute bright blue compact. The face plate looks like a plush cushion as you can see! Cute! It’s a dual lidded compact so the first lid opens to reveal a full size mirror and a rubberized sponge with a second lid that snaps close to keep the cushion inside fresh. I took note like many cushion makeup the actual foundation snaps out of the compact which has me curious about whether or not Physicians Formula will offer refills at some point in the future. If not, you can snap out the cushion and re-use the compact with another cushion refill of your choice from say Lancome or Etude House should you like.

If you’ve never used a cushion makeup before they are simply a sponge saturated with foundation which you can press into to release the product onto a makeup sponge, onto your brush, or fingers. Some people question bacterial issues with cushion and also the benefits of the cushion. I dunno why I like cushion makeup 🙂 I guess because a lot of the time I find the consistency of the texture super lightweight yet creamy and easy to blend. It’s a consistency that I haven’t run across in my foundation travels. Fluids, creams, BB Creams, liquids…none really compare to the consistency of a fluid foundation suspended in a sponge. For some reason, the texture is lighter yet super creamy and blends very, very flawlessly and it hasn’t been something I’ve been able to replicate with other foundation products.

Physicians Formula is light, creamy, and blends with ease providing a smooth, satiny finish on skin that perfects, brightens, and creates a flawless appearance. I love the smooth finish of this product, truly it does look airbrushed and it wears like a champ at around seven hours without fading. I had no issues with this adhering to my drier areas which was a huge plus! Coverage is pretty sheer though and should handle minor redness and darkness, duller skin, and uneven skin tone issues but might struggle with acne, acne scarring, or other harder to conceal imperfections.

I think both the shades I tried had a strong orange-y look in the cushion but swatched and applied with lighter beige undertones. I can actually get away with either the Light or Light/Medium shade selection! Both looked great on me.

It is a little expensive at $16.95 but it has a $9 mail in rebate offer plus CVS often as the brand on sale at 40% off so that helps the price along a little bit.

All in all Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation proves one of the best cushion foundations I’ve had the pleasure of using lately. Light, natural looking, easy to wear and apply, this one had absolutely no issues formula wise but one just wishes they would extend the shade range so everyone could partake it such a great formula.

Loves it.

O Skin Twin of Mine – if you were going to have to buy one shade, which would it be – the light or the light medium? Light looks a little *too* light, and the light/medium just a hair dark….. I could totally do the light/medium when I get a lil summer sun, but not sure about right now?
Thanks for an excellent review Muse – was really eager to hear about this!

    • Isabella Muse

Right now Light for sure Kim! 🙂 but Light/Medium for Summer! Aw my pleasure girl! 🙂 xoxoxo!

  • auntymaim

Ohh this packaging is adorable! I love the cushion form factor for travel – I travel a lot for work and want a higher coverage foundation that can last thru a long day at a conference or presenting, so I need a liquid foundation but literally every time I have brought one it has leaked. Nothing like a $40 bottle of foundation smeared all over the inside of a ziplock bag. >< I picked up the dinoplatz cushion and an etude house one but haven't been happy with the formulas or colors yet, they really bring out any unevenness in my skin texture. I'll give this a shot next thanks to your great review!

    • Isabella Muse

My pleasure Auntymaim! This doesn’t have the higher coverage you might want though! It’s a bit sheerer but still lovely 🙂 Also did you see that Missha compact they did? It allowed you to create your own cushion with your own foundation! They might have restocked it 🙂 worth a look!

  • Jinytte

Thank you for your review! Very interested in this and would snatch it up if I hadn’t just bought the Pur Minerals cushion. (I’m good for a while since it also came with a bonus refill)

I think this might be on sale at Rite Aid. Physicians Formula face cosmetics is BOGO 1/2 off and spend $15+ get 500 points.

    • Isabella Muse

My pleasure Jinytte! 🙂 I’m glad you got the Pur one, that’s a good one!

  • Terry Lam

Hmmm Maybe the loreal one is better on norm/combo skin. It didn’t get greasy in the tzone for you Muse?? I just want get it because of the cute compact……lol but I need decent coverage for my acne. Thanks babe!

    • Isabella Muse

Nope! Would have mentioned if it made me greasy 🙂 Coverage isn’t good enough for acne sadly 🙁 It’s more sheer! Just a heads up!

  • luna

Muse are all cushion foundations/bb/cc cream refills interchangeable with each other?I was wondering if all other cushion refills were the same size? Thanks!

    • Isabella Muse

Hi Luna. It’s hard to say as I don’t own every single cushion out there 🙂 So, I’m not sure if they are all the same size. I know that the Holika Holika cushion is a little larger than other cushions I own so that won’t fit into other compacts, Etude House seems the same size as the Physicians Formula one but the It Cosmetics one is a little loose inside the PF one as I tried it the other day. Sorry I can’t say if all cushions are interchangeable :-/

  • Daniela

I don’t know if there’s anything that can replace my IOPE Matte cushion (which is not matte at all I promise). But I kinda wanna try this one or the L’oreal one. Still undecided!

  • Katherine

Hi! Thank you so much for your review and swatches, you always get the new products so quickly! I have fair skin (I wear W1-2 in the L’Oreal True Match line) and in your swatch, it looked like Light might work for me, but it’s quite hard to tell. Just off of the top of your head, do you think Light is worth a chance for me, or do you think it might be too dark? If you’re busy don’t bother answering, I just wanted to ask you since you saw the shades in person and could probably tell better than me!

    • Isabella Muse

My pleasure Katherine! Hope the reviews are helpful. I’m not familiar with the L’Oreal True Match Collection shades and having never seen a photo of you it is hard to just throw out a shade match for you. I’m really not sure which shade would work for you. I’m sorry!

  • EliCaroline

Glad you reviewed this. I am going to pick one of these up today, but I wanted to be sure it was Muse-Approved before I did. 🙂

I have noticed with cushion foundations that I go through them and run out noticeably more quickly than I do a typical jar foundation. Is this just me or have you noticed something similar?

    • Isabella Muse

Depends Eli! I found the Asian ones last a little longer for me but the US ones, like this one, I seem to go through very fast. They don’t contain a lot of product :-/

  • Silvia

Next time I plan to travel I plan to get this! Been trying to decide between Physicians Formula or the Loreal wonder which shade matches better they are both attractive cases but the blue beats the other one. Looks so pretty the compact. Many years ago I had the Body Shop and also Cover Girl pressed foundation and found easily to pack and apply while traveling. I still have them but since they are old I use them after applying lotion to my legs as a light tanner. Lol! Works great I only wear rarely for a dress or skirt night out. Btw, I tried both the light as well as the medium Jergens Glow leg tanner and they didn’t do a thing for me. Also, had some itching reaction to them I kept thinking it must be my pj’s or something else? Returned both first the light one and then the medium shade to Target. Not good! Itch is gone! Farewell leg tanners I’m done trying those things have never worked on these legs. Running helps lot more and also gives me strong legs.

I picked this one up today. The shade names were different from those in your review though — Ivory, Natural and Beige. I got the natural which I guess is a light/medium, but it wasn’t called that so a little confusing. I like that the SPF is mineral type rather than chemical type.

I tried the Maybelline one too, which I will probably return to Ulta. I found the coverage on the Maybelline to be sheerer than the Physicians Formula one, though I am going to try the Maybelline (in Classic Ivory) one more time before deciding whether to return. Interesting because the Maybelline was supposed to have fuller coverage.

    • Isabella Muse

Yeah, they expanded the shade range recently to include three new shades. The ones you listed are new colors 🙂 I really liked the PF one a lot! The Maybelline one is nice but the PF ones fits better for me!

  • Phyllis Reklis

Hey! just noticed the updated mention of the new shades ! Will you be testing the Natural or the Beige? or know of anyone who has tried those? Thanks so much! Hope you are not snowed in!!!

    • Isabella Muse

I haven’t tried them as the light/medium shade works great for me already! I don’t know who might have them sadly sorry 🙁 if I do try them I’ll def swatch! Thankfully all is back to normal today 😀

      • Phyllis Reklis

Thank you for the reply! I will watch for reviews out there to see what people think esp to see if beige is darker than light/medium and where the neutral fits in the range? Glad that you are back to normal in NY…my kids in Astoria were back to normal today as well.

        • Isabella Muse

no worries! If I try them will def swatch. Happy to be back 🙂 We had a lot of delays this weekend going and coming back but the weekend wasn’t too ruined 😀 Ah travel! Glad to hear your kids are back! Back to the grind this week 😀

        • Cheryl

I emailed customer service at Physicians Formula to try to get a better handle on the shade ranges. The info provided, the shades run (lightest to darkest) as follows: ivory, light, natural, light/medium, medium, and beige. I am still attempting to figure out the undertones of light and natural, as light/medium was too dark and too orange for me. I need something lighter and more neutral. Not sure if my best bet is light, or natural.

  • Silvia

I don’t own this cushion foubdation but plan to after finishing all other I have. I do have their blushes, shimmering strips and love those for a tan contouring or lightly over all highliter on cheeks. I think if you are very fair (as I am) is safe to go with the lightest shade? Their natural powder and blushes are even a bit dark on me unless i slightly use them barely tapping with a soft brush. I have the pink blush it is very natural looking I tried the peach and returned barely color on that one. They are very light mist of them I use them for days of exercising (lol!) or for that barely look. Not too crazy about them but do love the shimmering strips. If these helps? 🙂
