What Are Your Makeup and Beauty Problems and What Are Your Fixes for Them?

Makeup

What are your makeup and beauty problems and what are your fixes for them? Dull skin? Any super hydrating moisturizing that you’re using that eases it? Problems with cakey foundation? Any great primers that fix the problem?

What are some of your current makeup or beauty problems that are causing you issues and what beauty hacks have you found to fix ’em?

Here’s one of mine!

Itchy, flaky eye lids! I have no idea what is going on but my left eye has decided to develop a gross crust on it and I’m having a hard time getting it to go away. It’s kinda flaky and dry plus it itches horribly. I think it’s just a case of super dry skin.

The problem?

My eyeshadow looks awful! I can’t even get my beloved Benefit Lemonaid on right as it ends up looking all patchy and gross.

The fix?

I’ve taken to applying a little Clinique Smart Treatment Oil on it prior to applying Lemonaid, my eyeshadow primer, and my eyeshadow. This not only adds moisture but it also helps my eyeshadows from caking up and looking dry!

How about you?

Problem:dry under eye that look so bad with any concealer corrector foundation an can not be set with any powder. The fix: kielh avocado eye cream and Anastasia corrector from Macy’s . you can not believe how many concealers I tried……woow.

Dryundereyes, this sounds wonderful. Does it stay long and creaseless too? Thanks 🙂

I don’t have a fix but a re-occurring problem. My beauty issue is with applying matte, stains or any type of pigmented lip color in the winter. I exfoliate and somehow get one uneven patch and it shows through the color so I start over and when I try to rub off that uneven patch on my lip starts to bleed in one spot and applying anything oil/petroleum (moisture) based keeps the rest of my lip color from applying correctly. If someone has a quick fix that would be great!

My mom has this problem Adrienne and our doctor made her do the following : avoid scrubs for a few days, as well as all lip products except for Aquaphor lip balm. She keeps a thick layer on at all times, especially at night. After a few days she can ease back into regular lip products but she continues Aquaphor before bed. This has been a dream product for her at a very reasonable price! She’s been doing this about 3 months with excellent results (totally unfairly, she has this problem year round!)

I’m Canadian so I understand your issue with flaky lips in the winter. I made a homemade scrub with coconut oil and brown and white sugars and it’s been working really well for me!

I have a similar issue. What works for me is exfoliating my lips (GENTLY!) before bed, then applying a thick layer of Nuxe Rêve de Miel before bed. I massage it in well and when I wake up, my lips are soft and ready to go. I notice that brushing my teeth also dries my lips, so in the morning I brush first thing after waking up, then apply a light layer of some lip balm (not Rêve de Miel, it’s too thick for daytime for me). By the time I do my makeup, I notice that my lips are ready even for the mattest of all mattes. 😀

      Hope this helps!

    Problem: Cakey powdery looking foundation
Fix: Use Nivea Cream as a Moisturizer and NYX Dewey Setting Spray after applying powders and buff in lightly after it dries down a bit with a fluffy powder brush. It will not mess up your face and gives a natural flawless finish.

Problem: extremely dry, flaky lips. My fix is using the new clinique sweet pot lip scrub/lip balm. This is THE STUFF! It does a great job of removing my dry, flaky skin without being too harsh, and the balm is buttery and moisturizing. Best yet, its all in the same package and perfect for on the go!

I have dryer skin. And when I put my skin care on it makes my lids as if I have oils lids. So I wipe off my skin care after 10 min on my lids. They are ready for a primer and I keep my eye color for hours.

I have the same issue with oily lids and that new Maybelline eye primer has solved it. I can use my oils and then apply the primer before my shadow. It keeps the shadow in place all day (even my MAC shadows, which normally disappear on me entirely).

I also get dry flaky eyelids! Eyeshadow goes on super patchy. I put some aloe vera gel on my eyelids and it works like a charm!

Oily, dehydrated skin is my problem especially in the winter so I double prime. After my morning moisturizer I use a hydrating primer all over and then a mattifying primer in my t-zone. The 2 thinner layers of hydration ensure that my skin can take a mattifying primer & setting powder all day without becoming uncomfortable. I’ve been loving the Neutrogena Hydro Boost gel spf 15, the MUFE step 1 hydrating primer and the Becca mattifying primer. The MAC Mineralize Timecheck lotion is also beautiful.

Problem: watery eyes ruin my under-eye makeup.

Solution: the best solution I’ve found so far is to bring my under-eye products (like mascara, an inner-corner highlight, and a shadow stick) to the office and apply them there instead of doing them at home (my eyes tend to water most when I’m outside, so once I’ve reached the office I’m “safe”).

It’s kind of a pain in the butt, I’ve been trying out NYX’s “Gotcha Covered” waterproof concealer, but since the powder I set it with isn’t waterproof (and it’s hard to keep from dabbing at my inner corners when they’re watering) it’s not really working.

I do love those little Q-tips with eye makeup remover in their stems though (Almay and CVS’s store brand make them, probably others too), they come in portable packs and are great for erasing smudges.

Blee, I’m confused . Are you saying you’re putting your moisturizer and everything on your eye lids ?

  • Lorraine

Sorry muse that last reply was for a specific comment. I got dry skin on one of my eye lids once, and I’m typically very oily.
It got so bad I had to go to the Dr, and he told me no eye makeup for 2 weeks (I cheated with liner) & then to not use primer as much or as often because the skin was basically not able to breathe with a constant physical barrier of thick primer plus shadows I was wearing every day.
I’ve since switched to a thin coat of the nyx hd primer and I don’t put it all up my lid and don’t wear it every single day and I’ve been ok.

That’s not a beauty hack sorry but your eyelid problem sounded similar!

    • Isabella Muse

hmmm! Lorraine, thanks! I was just thinking this morning that I might need to avoid eye makeup because my eyes have been acting so weird lately!

Dry, dry, dry skin that makes my makeup look powdery and wrinkly. (Yuck!) I have been totally into sprays/mists (including one from Essentiel Elements that smells like rosemary, yum) throughout the day. I am sure my coworkers (who can hear the spritz but not see it) are wondering what’s going on, but feels so refreshing and keeps me from drying out.

  • Sara

I apply lipstick from the bullet like an old lady. Lol. No cure for that unfortunately. However, I have better luck with the lip crayon type lippies. I’ve got dozens of them. My favorite, believe it or not, are the Wet n Wild balm stains. They are a thin consistency but don’t travel outside my lip line and are nicely pigmented. Easy to reapply. Been practicing with liquid lippies. So far so good. Ofra and the Revlon liquid lipsticks are looking and feeling really nice.

Problem: Massive blotches of dry skin on my upper cheeks. Makes applying foundation a nightmare and blush goes on extremely sloppy.

Solution: Stop exfoliating as often and use the First Aid Radiance Pads for gentle removal of dead cells. Use day cream and hydrating primers in the morning, and use Radiance pads and facial oils (Body Shop Oils of Life omfg are saving me this year) at night before bed. Skin is so much better in the morning and far fewer horrible blotchy spots. 😀

Also, I second the idea of using aloe vera (best to find the actual plant. Most Asian/Hispanic markets have them all the time) and even refrigerate them for a cooling effect. Squeeze a bit to the lids morning and night and it should really help! I have this issue in the summer due to severe allergies and eye drops that dry me the hell out.
