Hit or Miss: Kat Von D

kat von d makeup

Kat Von D is one of the longest running Sephora in-house brands. Sephora has collaborated with a variety of characters and celebs over the years including Hello Kitty, TokiDoki, and a variety of others but Kat Von D has been around since 2009.

Recently, when Kat Von D launched her own online portal for her makeup line I felt for sure that it would mean she was pulling out of Sephora. But nope, she’s still going strong with new product launches each season.

I heard she’s even reformulating some of her fragrances. I have them all, I really need to pull them out and use them…!

What do you think of Kat Von D’s makeup and beauty line?

Is it a hit or a miss?

Umm this is actually a hard one for me. I really like some of Kat Von D’s offerings like her concealer and her Lock-It Foundation! For a while I was obsessed with own every single eyeshadow palette she put out until I realized I rarely use them due to the frost factor. I mean, if I’m honest, about 90% of her eyeshadows have so much frosty glitter! I hate frost with a passion!

More recently her Shade + Light Blush Duos were pulled after receiving really bad reviews. I suspect maybe they are reformulating these?

So her brand def has some misses sadly.

But she also has some hits!

Her lipsticks are typically very good and her base products are almost always excellent especially her concealer.

I hate to be wishy-washy about my reply but I’m going to say the Kat Von D Makeup Collection is a hit and a miss for me.

I think most of you will likely feel the same way!

But do share!

Is Kat Von D a hit or a miss for you?

Or maybe both?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Hey Muse! I just have to say that I love your blog and I read your reviews before I try ANY product. Thank you for keeping us up to date in the beauty world! I have Kat Von D’s Mi Vida Loca Remix palette and it is the best eyeshadow palette I have ever used. I love it! But I’ve never tried any of her other products.

Aw you’re welcome Christian <3!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 I didn't pick up the Loca Remix but glad to hear it is awesome! Some of her palettes were def hits! Some had a bit too much frost for me 🙂 Thank you so much for your great comment, made my day!

It’s a huge miss for me. I don’t care for the eye shadow formula, the everlasting liquid lipstick is the worst! It doesn’t stay on, migrates, and needs constant reapplication. I did really love the Saint perfume and was sad to see it go. Hopefully that’s one that will be coming back. Since most of what I’ve tried, I haven’t cared for, the rest is a pass for me.

I have her contour pallet and I also have three of her lager ones that I like ( matte and shimmer)and two small three shadows in a one. I do like them all , but I don’t like the lip stick much. I have not worn it. 🙁 Oh I have some blushes and like them too. I have two of her perfumes and I like them also. So 75% hit for me. 🙂

Her Tattoo liner was my holy grail until it got all streaky on me with the application! 🙁 But those liquid lipsticks, her Shade + Light palettes, and the Lock-It line are just fantastic to me. So when I see more floppy products (I’m looking at you blush duos), it makes me sad.

Her foundation was a miss for me. Sampled it and loved it until my wrist turned terracotta orange 20 minutes later. 🙁

I love most of her line…Trooper is my HG cat eye liner, Shade and Light Eye palette I use every day (so creamy and pigmented…even the lightest shades), the Tattoo concealer is creamy, non-Creasy…I use it as foundation!! I even have an original brush set from her (has tattooed roses engraved in the handles) and I use 2 of them every day!
Really the only thing I’m not crazy about are her lipsticks, but I’m not a fan of matte, dry lippies by anyone!!

Such a miss for me! Im really glad that the stuff i did try was all mini sized,i would have cried if i had spent a lot of money. The tattoo liner was great….for about a week. I seriously have 2 dollar Jordana liquid liners that are soooo much better then this! The lipstick i tried was all thick and crumbly, AND the cap wont stay on! I doubt that i try anything else from her.

The permanent line is mostly a hit, and I’m happy the Studded Kiss lipsticks got reformulated. I like the lipsticks and liquid lipsticks, and the permanent eye palettes. I did not like the last two holiday eye palettes: Way too patchy and way too much fallout. The blush duos were awful, but they got pulled, so hopefully those will be reformulated.

Despite the deep following across the beauty blogosphere for kat von d products, I have never found myself attracted to her products. I am not sure why? Maybe it’s the packaging? I have to say I am a total fan girl of hers tho . But I don’t find myself ever Being curious enough about her products to ever buy it. Weird.

I’ve really liked the interstellar shadow pallet, tattoo liner & a few lip products that I’ve tried so far. My only complaint is that I wish there was a bit more office friendly selections available. I get that she is a tattoo artist & edgy is her thing. The long lasting formulas she creates are quite useful for everyone – but I feel a little excluded from the brand sometimes.

    • Courtney

I agree with you. Maybe that’s what it is. I don’t feel like I am the type of consumer she is geared towards?

  • Linda

I always have a tube of her Ink Liner in Trooper. That is the only product I’ve tried from her line, and it’s a must-have for me.

  • Marina

It is definitely a hit AND a miss for me! I adore her liquid lipsticks, but the traditional bullet lipsticks just don’t work for me. It’s like they don’t want to stick to my lips! Only one of four I own (Lolita) actually sticks around and doesn’t fade in a few minutes. Her liquid liner is fantastic and is my HG, go-to liner. I have been a makeup addict for about ten years now, and I STILL struggle with liquid liner, but this stuff helps a lot. I am a fan of her concealer, too. But her shadows…yikes. I used to have two old school palettes when I was first getting into makeup (Ludwig and True Love). Ludwig was okay, but True Love was pretty terrible! I’ve since bought the Mi Vida Loca Remix palette, and that didn’t wow me either. The colors are chalky and don’t blend well, in my experience. I want to love them, but I just can’t. Lastly, I have Sinner perfume and I love it. It makes me feel so sexy! So overall, a mixed bag. I really dislike the shadow formula and the standard lipsticks, but the liquid lipsticks, liner, and a few others odds and ends have been good.

The black tatoo liner is without a doubt a hit for me. I think the contour palette is a little overrated for the fact that no body need all three different highlighter and contour on one face. It might look good on different skin tones, but for just my face, one highlighter and one contour shade is enough. To be fair, a lot of contour palettes out there have the same problem as KVD. I noticed that KVD’s contour palette is very photo friendly, it gives me a sophisticated look and I can easily sculpt my face to look much skinnier in the picture. On the flip side, it is very easy to over do it and have a muddy face under the day light, at least for me. I also own a Metal Crush eye shadow and it is very nicely pigmented, goes on beautifully. It’s just a bit too pricy for one eye shadow (I got it as a gift from my boyfriend). I can’t wait to try out the liquid lipstick! Lolita looks so good on everybody, I just wonder if it feels too dry.

I have several of KvD’s shadow palettes, but the “Shades and Light” Eye Contour Palette is my favorite. I also love a lot of her lip products.

FYI Kat Von D, Tokidoki, and Hello Kitty are/were all actually manufactured by Sephora, so they will never be sold anywhere else 🙂 I used to work for Sephora, I think there were a couple other brands too, but I can’t remember them and/or they may not exist anymore.
