Where Do You Apply Your Makeup?

makeup application

I have a gorgeous vanity in my bedroom and strangely and perhaps a bit funny is the fact I don’t apply my makeup there. I also have a rather expensive Simple Human Mirror which I used to apply skincare but not makeup.

Yeah, I’m weird.

So where do I apply my makeup?

In my bathroom.

I dunno, it just seems logical to lean over sink, look in a mirror, and apply my makeup. I shower in the bathroom, get mostly dressed in the bathroom, and I do my hair there so why not my makeup?

Strangely, enough I tend to wander into my bedroom to do my skincare routine but when it comes time to do my makeup I end up doing it in the bathroom.

I don’t think I’m alone here.

Or am I?

Where do you apply your makeup?

Bathroom?

Bedroom?

On the subway?

Do share!

I do my makeup in my bathroom if I have enough time. Otherwise, I do it in my work bathroom or at my desk.

  • Caroline

I do my makeup in the bathroom because I live in a tiny house and there’s nowhere else to do it! For awhile, though, I was taking the bus to work and doing my makeup on there. I must say, it is quite a feat to apply eyeliner on a moving bus with 20 or 30 strangers sitting nearby! LOL

  • Diana

My apartment is kind of weird: upstairs there’s not quite a hallway, not quite a room. Sort of like an alcove, I guess? Anyway, It’s fairly large, so that’s where we have our double desk for our computers and a vanity for my makeup.

  • breyerchic04

For most things, bathroom, that’s where I do skincare and my foundation and usually blush stuff. But a lot of the time I do eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick in the car, parked in my own driveway, using the visor mirror. It’s absolutely the most comfortable place I’ve found to do it, and the best angles to see it. Plus I’m sitting.

    • chibi639

I prefer to do my makeup in the house, but totes agree about doing mascara using the visor! Something about that angle and having to look up at the mirror makes it so effortless!

      • breyerchic04

Exactly, of course I’d rather get it done in the house but the visor works so perfectly for the things I have trouble with or don’t want to mess up before I get where I’m going. It’s even easier for liner than it is for mascara!

I store all my makeup in two 3×3 cube shelves against the wall of my office that has a window, a “makeup wall” so to speak. I have a vanity mirror and vanity trays on top of the shelves, and I really enjoy having the natural light when applying my face in the morning. It helps that my office is next to the bathroom, so once I’ve got all my skincare on I just hope over next door to glam up. 🙂

I have a basket with a handle and I gather up the days makeup and sit on my bed to apply it. I do this because I can’t see very well without my glasses and I need to hold the mirror fairly close to my face. I would never be able to see in the bathroom mirror without by glasses.

    • Chynna

I have the same issue with my vision. It’s impossible for me to see as far as the bathroom mirror without my glasses, so I use a hand mirror. I usually do mine in the living room so I can listen to the news while I get ready.

    • Jules

Add me to the blind chick sitting on my bed holding a mirror an inch away from my face list! I like to be relaxed and comfortable, too. Plus, i have a window next to my bed, so the lighting is better!

    • Rachel R.

Same here, I’m terribly nearsighted in my left eye. I have a stick-on magnifying mirror that attached to my big mirror. It’s the only way I can do my eye makeup.

    • dia

I hop up on the countertop! Then I shove my face right up to the mirror.

On second thought maybe I should invest in a different solution. Hand mirror sounds less dangerous.

  • Jay

I apply skincare in the bathroom, and my makeup sitting at my makeup desk in my bedroom (or in the car when I’m a really bad girl). Its funny though, I have to be looking in the mirror to moisturize my face. I just have to watch myself, or look at my face immediately after to make sure everything is still there lol.

    • Joyce

LOL! That’s so funny about the moisturizer! I don’t think I need a mirror, but I almost always look at myself in the mirror when applying it!

    • LS

If I don’t check in the mirror after moisturizer, I inevitably have at least one large glob on my face somewhere 🙁

  • Gisela

Bathroom! Even if I own nice brushes I like to in a hurry use my own clean fingers to apply concealer and eyeshadow. So, I really need a sink with running water nearby or I get annoyed really fast lol.

  • Dora

Bathroom — it’s really only the available spot. Although hoping to switch to a horizontal-type dresser (and move my current tall one to my son’s room) and then set up a vanity type situation on top of it.

  • Christina

Huh, I do mine in my room (separate room for vanity and office). I also have my skincare stashed there, though I know I’m supposed to apply skincare while my skin is still damp. I just prefer to not have my skincare and makeup ruined by the heat of my showers. When I lived in an apartment, I applied my skincare in the bathroom and my makeup…still in my bedroom. I kept my makeup in a small rolling cart. My collection is too big to do that now.

  • Adrienne

I apply mine in the bathroom as well. I have huge globe (vanity) light bulbs in the bathroom around the mirror and I get the best light in there.

  • Erin34

Because my bathroom has just enough room to sit when necessary, and the “light” in my bed room depends on if the sun is shining, I have to do my make up in my kitchen. It’s the only room with a light in the ceiling and enough outlets to plug in more lamps. So I place my mirror on the counter next to the stove, use my table as my vanity, and try to end up not looking like a clown. Hopefully, I’ll be moving soon.

Bedroom. I actually don’t spend much time in the bathroom in the AM. I’m a shower at night kind of gal, I don’t use hot tools on my hair and don’t feel use cleanser on my face in the AM. Brushing my teeth is the only part of my morning that has to be done in the bathroom, so everything else is usually done at the vanity in my bedroom or in front of the large mirror above my dresser.

  • Victoria A.

If I’m doing a full face I sit down–I repurposed my old Ikea MICKE desk into a vanity when I bought a bigger desk and that has an OttLite mirror on top (unfortunately, the mirror part is wonky and won’t stay in place without a piece of Scotch tape). But if I’m doing the quickie foundation-mascara-lip color thing I just do it in the bathroom.

  • Joyce

I do mine in my sunroom because I like to work with natural sunlight 🙂 I call it my sunroom but it’s basically my living room with a million windows, skylights, and sliding glass doors 😛

I use a regular face mirror thingy that takes lots of love to get it to stay at the perfect angle, lol. I apply my makeup at my desk that I have in the far back right corner of the sunroom.

  • LS

I do skincare and make-up in my bathroom. To me it makes sense. I want to wash my hands before both tasks, so I need the sink right there. Also, I wet my beauty blender before I use it then wash it after. My stuff spills over onto my husband’s side of the counter, but our new house will have separate vanities to prevent that.

  • blee

My sweet hubby got me a desk and a Vanity Girl Makeup mirror that I have by a window for natural lighting and and a small makeup mirror for up close deal work when need. My skin care is applied in the bathroom mirror. 🙂

  • Rachel R.

Our bathrooms are tiny and have crappy lighting, so I turned the spare bedroom into a makeup and crafts room for me. I do my makeup in there.

  • Carolyn2

Bathroom! I have poor vision so need a mirror for sure – but it’s just easier to use the bathroom. 🙂

  • Lori

I start out in my bathroom, but depending how late I’m running, I finish at my desk at work. Or in the passenger seat if my husband is driving lol.

  • Nikole

Bathroom, standing up,looking in the mirror.
I don’t have room to do my skincare or makeup anywhere else, but that’s really not why. I’m messy and I tend to get powder everywhere, ‘blow’ fallout shadow off my cheeks – if I did that while sitting at a vanity in another room I would likely ruin the carpeting or floor. Bathroom is easiest room to clean the makeup mess. I may not have those problems if I were more skilled at applying makeup like some of the other commenters, but since I still basically suck at applying makeup I continue to make a mess.

  • Sara

Wow I didn’t realize how many people put makeup on in their bathroom. I like to sit on my bed and do my makeup with a 20$ light up mirror. I don’t think I need a vanity for my makeup bc I won’t ever sit there, beds more comfortable. What a fun topic!

  • Francesca

I have a huge desk and a little side dresser where I keep my makeup…but I apply it in the bathroom. Usually the light is more ideal..

  • LS

What these comments is teaching me is that home builders should offer a built-in wet vanity option in new construction. Move aside wet bars and butler’s pantries!

  • kellly

Bathroom. I have several different light bulbs in the fixture on top of the mirror to get bright, natural colored light and an adjustable magnifying mirror on the side of the large mirror over the sink. If I had known what a help that magnifying mirror would be, I would have gotten one ages ago. I can’t imagine trying to do my makeup now without it!

  • Melissa Armour

M-F at my work either at my desk or the restroom. Sat & Sun in my bedroom at my vanity.

  • Heidi

I have horrible eyesight, so if I have my contacts in I put it on in the bathroom since I can actually see what I’m doing from a couple feet away. But I mostly work at home and mostly wear my glasses, so I usually apply makeup — mainly to feel more polished for work and because I love makeup — but then I just apply it as I start the day. Check a few emails while the moisturizer sinks in and I apply concealer, eyeliner, etc., before moving on with the day.

  • Irina

    Hi! ^^
I also have a nice vanity but I NEVER do my make-up there, because a). it has big mirrors but they are too far for me to *apply* make-up looking in them, b). it’s in a corner of my bedroom where I don’t really use that often :)) LOL, and c). poor thing is used more for stuff being deposited on / around it… (the classical chair with clothes on it ehem ehem). So I apply it at my desk 😀 with a small, round mirror that I hold in my hand, so I can see my atoms up close lol
I also have a drawer there where I keep the stuff that I’m using more often, or that I plan to use more.

  • PixieWitch

wow, i never realized how weird this is but I do mine sitting cross legged in the living room at an end table with a lamp and a magnifying mirror. For somethings i use both lights, for others I prefer the softer light of just the lamp.

  • Onyx

I do my makeup in my bedroom, the lighting is better there. I also use a magnifying mirror to apply makeup (it’s either that or wear my glasses to get ready), and it’s easier to use the magnifying mirror at my desk.

  • Katie

    Bathroom, because –
    1) tiny apartment
    2) I use my hands/fingers to apply a lot of makeup and there’s a sink right there to wash everything off!
The lighting is always terrible but I’m just used to leaning over the sink. When traveling and staying with others, it’s weird to move somewhere else so others can shower, etc. It throws me off a little bit, even if I sit at a table with better lighting, it’s still weird 😛

  • Melissa

I do my skincare in the bathroom. But it’s hot upstairs so I do makeup downstairs – foundation/powder in the downstairs bathroom and the rest generally sitting down at the island in the kitchen. On the weekend I generally take my time and do more fun makeup -often I have a glass of wine and make a little event out of it. This is when I tend to watch some YouTube videos and try new looks or techniques. But I have to have a small mirror right up close to my eyes when doing eye makeup. I like to be able to see what I’m doing up close.

  • Cara

I used to do it in the bathroom, but after showering, the bathroom gets too hot and I worried about the heat affecting my makeups, and also I was hot and sweaty after doing my hair, and my makeups would slide off my face. So I moved it all out, and now I use the formal dining room table.lol I use the simple human mirror, and have my 2 alex’s in there. I wish I had more natural lighting, though. Was thinking about setting it up on a fold up table in the living room by the bay windows, but half the time I’m getting ready for work when the sun isn’t all the way up yet. And what good would it do when it was gloomy out?lol

  • Lorraine

I used to do it in my room, standing next to the mirror closet doors. Now I use my room and a hand mirror until I can get my new house fully furnished the way I like. The mirror on the sink orbedroom vanity are useless for me because I’m very nearsighted and can’t see myself.

I do my makeup in the car a lot of were running late ( someone else driving) and when I was in collage I would do part of my makeup at the train (like a subway). I’d do foundation and lipstick at home, put on dark sunglasses to walk to the station, then do eye-shadow and liner on the train. No blush, no mascara, just heavy smokey eye every day. If it were today I’d just skip eye makeup, do foundation, lipstick, mascara and powder. Bud back then I never went anywhere without black eyeliner.

  • Deirdre

Has to be bathroom because of the sink, powder going everywhere, washing hands after applying foundation, and like others have said, that’s where I cleanse so it makes sense to do it all in one place. A vanity with inset sink in the bedroom would be luxury but even then, I think the light is better in the bathroom!

  • Tracy

I apply my skincare in my bathroom and my makeup in my makeup room where I use a combination of natural light and that ridiculously expensive simple human mirror you mentioned . I like to listen to music or a podcast or watch YouTube videos while I put on my makeup.

  • Zovesta

Anywhere. From a dark bedroom (yup) to the bathroom to the living room mirror to the reflection on my phone to the reflection on the microwave to the car visor…

    😀

Hell, I’ve even done my eyeliner while looking into a spoon!

I’m not so picky. I just make sure to check it as soon as I have good light to make sure I’ve got it all blended and nice. As soon as my room is done, I can get back to doing it in front of my dresser/vanity in there, lol!

  • Iris

In my bedroom or at my work desk. Sometimes in public restrooms too or lipstick in public.

  • TC

Skincare and makeup, morning and night, or whenever getting ready – Sitting in my bed. Shower then get back into bed, spread a towel across my lap and lay everything out on it in sections, face, eyes, lips, etc. Been doing it for years (decades) that way. I’d love a nice vanity but know I wouldn’t use it and it’d become a dumping ground for clutter.

  • Felicia

Greetings Ms. Muse. My daily routine is to shower in one bathroom then use my downstairs bathroom for makeup and hair only; of which is done standing up. I recently received a vanity for my birthday and the plan is to apply makeup there. I’ve never sat to do hair or makeup so this will be interesting. Not sure if I’ll do my hair at the vanity too much clutter then.
