Remember When Avon Used to Have New Makeup Releases?

avon

I’ve been mumbling to myself recently about Harmons having absolutely nothing new. I’ve been known to talk to myself occasionally particularly about my favorite topic, makeup. I figure, if I talk to myself it’s ok so long as I don’t start replying to myself.

Anyway, if you know anything about Harmon’s you know they have a really great selection of new drugstore makeup quite often but lately I walk in and of course, there is literally a mile long wide aisle with NYX, L’Oreal, Maybelline, etc…etc…BUT there’s sadly no new stuff.

It’s rather bleak, cold, and terribly lonely at Harmons lately.

I feel a gloomy cloud follows me around as I walk from aisle to aisle muttering about the lack of newness.

You know who else hasn’t had anything new in LIKE FOREVERS and EVERS? Avon!

Remember when Avon used to have fun makeup releases!?

Ok, so yeah, sure Avon is a hit or miss kind of brands.

Hit: Haiku! Miss: Concealers! YAK!

But fact of the matter is they have always had some really fun seasonal offerings and limited edition color cosmetics. Cynthia Rowley, Jillian Dempsey, and a slew of others have worked with Avon and successfully launched some very fun products.

I mean, hello, do you remember the Rose Gold Lipsticks!? Those were awesome.

I can recall a time when Avon was launching a new lipstick almost ever other month and they crushed it, people! Avon makes a damn fine lipstick and many, many of their formulas have passed across these lips and successfully gotten a rave.

What happened to those days?!

Now, whenever I go to Avon’s site and I click on new there’s really nothing there except re-promoted gift sets.

I mean right now with cushion makeup being so popular you’d think Avon would be busy launching their own variation of it. But nope, nada…all quiet on the Avon frontier.

I do wonder what happened to Avon but hopefully they get out of their funk and start releasing new products again soon!

Have you noticed silence in the Avon world?

Any of your other beloved brands kind of quite lately?

Do share ’em!

Things have been way too quiet on the drugstore front for months now. When was the last time we saw anything new…wasn’t it the Cover Girl eye palettes and Oh Sugar balms, back before Christmas? Seems like ages ago.

    • Isabella Muse

agreed! And the L’Oreal rose lipsticks wbhich I skipped out on because none worked for me but yeah, WTH no new drugstore makeups!!!!!

  • Jane

You are correct – I got one of their new palettes and matte lipsticks, but it’s been mostly radio silence. I don’t think they’re doing well financially.

Lizzy Arden brought out a slew of new colors in their ceramide lipstick, but when I went to the counter to look at them, the counter guy said, oh, they’re all mixed in, and I don’t know the names of the new ones.” Delightful. In fact, most counters are kind of crappy lately. New releases come weirdly late, and they never put up the little standees that used to symbolize “new makeup fun, Jane, come here.” : P

    • Isabella Muse

That’s sad! They used to release a new lipstick formula almost every season and I enjoyed them immensely! The price point was great and the quality was super. Such a shame! Wow, great CS FTW! Jeez. This is why I prefer shopping online, no idiots to deal with. I expressed all that you said in my lipstick index post: https://www.musingsofamuse.com/2015/05/is-the-lipstick-index-down.html I honestly thought it was me but yes, it seems like things come slower and slower. The economy is on the rise so beauty is on the low!? Funny because Lisa Eldridge was saying the makeup/beauty world is doing the best it has every done in history. And maybe it is, but the releases seem so much slower. Where as a few years ago there were new releases every other week now it seems like you have to wait a few months before anyone releases something. Glad I’m not alone feeling like everything is weirdly late!

  • Kimmwc03

I agree! Everything is so slow lately. Avon seems to have died or something. The only brand that is really releasing anything is ColourPop. I guess this is good for my wallet, though.

    • Isabella Muse

Not really, there lipsticks are quite lovely but aside from that haven’t used much Mary Kay!

  • NJ

I’d love to see you do some reviews on beauty from Sally beauty! I bet you would find some new things there. Palladio brand is rarely covered & they have skincare too!

    • Isabella Muse

I’ve reviewed a few bits from Sally Beauty and Palladio 🙂

  • Stacy

I am so glad to hear you say nice things about Avon. I think people tend to dismiss them as an old fashioned company or something, but I have always loves many of their products. And you are right, not too much newness lately- boo hiss Avon 🙂
I like Avon eyes shadow quite a bit. The pigment is not like an UD, but sometimes for daytime wear you want something that you need to build a bit, especially with the less neutral colors. I can get a really nice professional look and then build it up a little more for evening. Lipsticks have always been good. The Avon mineral makeup I actually liked better than Bare Minerals, but I can’t do the mineral makeups anymore. The Mark line is great too. Oh well, let’s hope they are just taking a break and will be back with lots of new stuff for us.

    • Isabella Muse

I think they are indeed, passed off as something old fashion but they do have some excellent picks! Not everything is great but some items are keepers! it’s rather sad they haven’t been doing anything new in a while! 🙁 Darn shame! I hope Mark/Avon starts launching some new stuff again!

      • Charmaine

        Hi Izzy!
I’ve found that since Avon has been re-releasing a lot of their, erm, older perfume scents (and dc’ing a lot of the newer, much better smelling ones) that I don’t have nearly as much urge to see what they’ve got going on because I’m really sad and disappointed with them. I already was mad at them when they changed the cream blush formula from cream-to-powder to just greasy, and for dc’ing several of my fave scents (the ORIGINAL Instinct for Her, Dreamlife, Pink Suede, Absynthe by Christian LaCroix, Passion Dance…I could go on), but then they bring back Topaz and Timeless and others – YUCK! I hated them back in the day, and I really despise them now (cuz it’s all about me, lmao).
        WhatEVER, Avon, whatEVER!

          • Charmaine

Thank you, Michelle!!!! I knew I couldn’t possibly be alone

        • Stacy

Oh my goodness I loved Absynthe and there was another one I loved. Whoever makes “Diva” perfume- I love it, but it’s a little strong. The Avon version was the same designed and a lighter version of Diva. It was perfect and now it’s gone. I was also a huge fan of the Avon Josie Natori fragrance and that is gone now too.

Perhaps I’m getting old, but the dearth of new releases is just fine by me. For a while it seemed like everyone was putting out huge new product lines (Maybelline Color Whisper and L’Oreal Colour Caresse, I’m side-eying you) and then a year and a half later when they hadn’t blown the existing products out of the water, they were discontinued. Let’s face it, most drugstore makeup buyers are not makeup addicts – they just want to find a basic routine and be able to go back and get the same thing when they are picking up their toothpaste and aspirin. When new products keep popping in and out that makes it hard and makes customers wary. There’s a little color story every 6 months or so with a couple new and a couple existing shades of existing products, and that’s probably what the drugstore should be about. It seems the constant new products are mostly confined to the brands popular on Youtube/Instagram, and as far as I’m concerned let them stay there.

Not to mention the manufactured hype of things like Sweet Peach – it makes me not want to give brands my money when they pull things like that.

As far as Avon is concerned, just my thought but perhaps some of those big names didn’t pan out in dollar figures and they need some time to recoup. Their big sellers are things like Glimmersticks that have been around forever and get passed down from mother to daughter.

Thank gosh I’m not the only one! I go in and out of drugstores probably once every 2-3 weeks and the beauty isle feels the same. I remember a few years ago new collections were ALWAYS coming out and my wallet would cry. Now I feel a lack of excitement when i walk into drugstores.

    • Isabella Muse

likewise! Nothing new at all! money saved I guess haha!

It’s like there is an embargo against new/fresh cosnetics, but mainly in the USA. Check literally any other country’s cosmetic web sites: L’Oréal (Paris not us, it’s in French, but you’ll get it, Yves Rocher and even Avon…in the UK there is a new release of 24K Gold lipsticks. I for one am jealous.

    • Isabella Muse

I think you’re right. Seems the case for most releases lately but budget and higher end! They seem to want to hold back on launch dates and trickle it slowly via social media!

  • Dianne Hernandez

    Hi Isabella,

This month Avon released their new True Color Lip Balm, I’ve been using it and it’s a lovely moisturizing sheer color. It’s great for summer. They have also been launching new mascaras left and right from the “BIG & ” line ( Big & Daring, Big & False Lash, and the newest Big & Multiplied)

As far as Avon being quite, it may seem like it in makeup, but it may be because they have been focusing on their Skincare, Fragrance, Fashion and Jewelry departments.

The past couple of weeks Avon has introduced 4 new skin care products in the ANEW Clinical brand and a completely new line of cleansing products just this week. As well as a couple of new fragrances, Little Black Dress & Luck La Vie which are both modern lovely fragrances.

Can you tell I love my Avon! LOL. You gotta try that new True Color Lip Balm, I’d like to know what you think about it!

  • Michelle Luna/Michelley/Chelley

Muse I am so glad to find that you’re into Avon, as I have been since my mum sold it when I was little, through the years I was a rep myself… it’s been over 30 years now!! Do you remember that, if I am not mistaken, Avon was the first to put out nail polish strips?? I still have a package, unopened, in my stash!!! That was around 2005? I think?
I agree about their lipsticks, they have always had fabulous lip products (for me the HG is the Glazewear line). I also loved all the newer scents they would put out, especially the spring/summer releases, I would haul those every year. And I was basically obsessed with Mark/.mark! The hook up waterproof mascara and the tattoo lash mascara were the best!
Gosh this is making me want to go back in time and haul more….

    • Isabella Muse

and eyeshadow ones too! ;-D remember those!? ;-D It’s rather sad they aren’t as good as they once were!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They used to have tons of great stuff especially seasonal le items and now it seems they rely on their perm line!
