Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome

The Color Tattoo family gets yet another addition with the new Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome which launched with the Maybelline Summer 2016 Collection recently in ten gorgeous shade selections.

We’ve been through a good deal of Color Tattoo products haven’t we? The original Color Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow, the Color Tattoo Pigments, the Color Tattoo Concentrated Crayons, and now a brand new liquid metallic eye cream!

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome is a new way to get your Color Tattoo fix in liquid form. These cream shadows promise to deliver up to 24 hours of wear to eyes with a creamy, fluid formula that leaves behind a blast of brilliant liquid metal to lids.

Take a look!

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome Eyeshadow

I’m definitely a Color Tattoo fan girl. Some people love the original potted cream Color Tattoos, others don’t. Personally, I’ve collected them all including limited edition ones since their original release. I have to admit I haven’t used the loose pigments nor the crayons as much as I did those potted creams. And sadly, I likely won’t use these new Color Tattoo Eye Chromes as much either. Nothing quite lives up to the original idea of formula does it?

Color Tattoo Eye Chrome are $9.99 each and weigh in at 0.11 oz. These come housed in a slim barrel with an attached sponge applicator for application. They are a feast for the eyes that’s for sure. The colors all glimmer very temptingly from the display and beg to be purchased. Which, I fear, is exactly how I ended up purchasing all ten! How can you resist all that tasty sparkle right? The colors range from dramatic to subtle with gorgeous, sparkly jewel tones of purple, green, bronze, and more. Each shade is more dramatic and gorgeous than the next and it was pretty hard to say, “Hey, I’ll just grab one or two!” Although after trying them I kind of wish I had.

The formula is a thicker, creamy consistency which has a slightly chunky, drier texture. The main problem with this formula is the fact it dries way too quickly! I typically swatch directly from the sponge applicator and I kid you not, almost as soon as I swipe it on and lift my finger to blend it is already dry. This means blending is quite a patchy mess. They simply dry way to quickly which results in messy eye looks as you can see below in some of my photos. The color ends up looking patchy and even flaky in some areas particularly with the darker shades. Some shades applied better than others in my experience. One shade that sticks out is Bronze Sheen. This applied, blended, and built very easily on my eyes and looked incredible. However, I am sad to say I had issues with all the other shades. I will say they don’t actually crease and are fairly budge proof during the wear but they are also mighty difficult to remove at the end of the day. The pigmentation is beautiful on all but one of the shades (Glided Rose was terribly sheer) and they all swatch amazingly on my arm. In my opinion, if they formula was a little wetter and less quick to set you’d likely be able to build the colors into a wonderful jeweled eye look.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome aren’t going to win any major awards with me sadly. The too quick to dry formula makes for a difficult application process but lord knows, if they could improve that I see the formula as a winning formulation that wears like a real champ! And let’s not forget how gorgeous some of these shades are. The pigmentation is fantastic but the formula is too problematic for creating eye looks. Let’s face it, cream eyeshadow shouldn’t be this hard to apply right?

Oh well!

If nothing at all I would recommend trying out Bronze Sheen at the very least.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome are available now at Walmart.com, Ulta.com, Amazon.com, and at your local drugstores.

Well boo! These look so pretty swatched!! I might cave & buy beige luster at some point, since it might be a little more forgiving, since it’s light, maybe? And ps. Love how you coordinated your hair band with each color!!

    • Isabella Muse

lol thanks Jules! I fear I am a matchy match type of person! Beige Luster was ok for application! Not bad! The darker shades are the worst for patchiness sadly :-/

  • Kimmwc03

I bought Gilded Rose but I hate it. It was so patchy. I think it’s going in the trash unless I can make it work with some powder over the top.

  • Carrie Szmukst

that was my problem wth them too! they wear incredibly which i love but they dry too fast! the darker shades are a bit too patchy for my taste but the lighter ones are so pretty

    • Isabella Muse

sad sign! I wish they all worked out as fabulously as the bronze one and I would be one happy girl!

  • yelena

i bought the khaki and love it. I must have gotten lucky because mine is actually very liquid and easy to blend out. I haven’t noticed any patchy areas or anything.
ps. I actually think the purple is my favorite on u muse 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

lucky! I wish the khaki worked for me as it is one of my fav shades! But I got a good deal of patchiness with it boooo! I don’t care though def still using/wearing these as some of them look quite nice on ;-D aw thanks Yelena!

  • Laura H

I love these! I got both the Bronze and Fool’s Gold. I did not apply them directly with the applicator; instead, I used a flat brush to pick up product off the wand. I got very smooth coverage that way. The staying power is amazing.

    • Isabella Muse

Laura, I tried with a brush but I couldn’t build well! Any tricks/tips?

      • Laura H

I think they work better without a primer. I’m able to get full coverage pretty quickly by smoothing/tapping with my flat cream eye shadow brush. Then I put a little powder eye shadow over it, just to tone down the shimmer a little.

        • Isabella Muse

I tried with a brush but no lucky! I seem to get a good deal of patchiness still! They are lovely but some of the shades take work to use! They just dry soooo fast!

    • Carol G

I love these too! The wear time is incredible. I do not use primer either as I believe it messes with the formula. I’ve been using either a brush or my finger to pick up the product off the applicator and tap it on in several coats. I actually find the opposite to be true, Muse, as I feel they don’t dry quick enough. I put on a sheer coat with my finger, wait for it to dry then tap another coat or two on, depending on how bold you want the coverage to be. Using this product straight from the applicator does pick up way too much product, resulting in certain area looking patchy. Just play around with them a little. And they are great eyeliners if nothing else! I really like them for the hot, humid weather because they do last all day. 🙂

  • Kim

You confirm what another review I saw on these said: they dry too fast for blending and end up patchy. Too bad because the color range is so pretty. I’ll be skipping these.

    • Isabella Muse

Try Bronze Sheen at least Kim! It’s actually really nice! 😀

  • Brandee

Even with all the patchiness they look beautiful on your eyes, maybe try mixing a little eye primer with it ?

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks <3! I used primer but didn't try mixing primer with it! That might help 😀 thanks for the rec!

  • blee

Oh, you made them look good even if they were hard to blend! I tempted to try a few ;-D

  • kellly

I got the Bronze one and I like it. I’m glad I was lucky and picked the one that seems to have the least of the problems! I like the original cream Tattoos, too, and I’m usually not a cream shadow fan.
Some of the other colors look tempting but after reading your review about the lack of blendability, I think I can save myself some money. The colors are pretty, tho.

  • Kelly

They all look great on you! I’ve been wanting to try these. Maybe I should save my $ for that fabulous Smashbox palette you just blogged about though. I love Smashbox and the colors are perfect.

    • Isabella Muse

You can always get these on sale Kelly! Ulta has them BOGO at the moment 🙂 if you want to try one without splurging too much I’m sure there are coupons too! 😀 And yeah, I can’t blame you, that Smashbox palette looks lovely!

  • Julie

Wow, you REALLY do look beautiful in every color under the rainbow! I am still a geeky fan-girl of yours after all these years, even if you did make me spend $35 at BBW for the new S’mores yesterday – thanks for always giving me something to look forward to on the computer other than work! …xoxo

    • Isabella Muse

you are way too kind Julie thank you! 😀 awww omg you’re going to make me cry ;-D LOL! Sorry about that but you smell pretty now right!? XOXOXOXOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ave

I bought 8 of the 10 Maybelline Eye Chromes and I agree with your review. I really thought they would be better. I also didn’t use the powder and the crayon broke. I have to wait until I read your reviews before buying new products!

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks that’s a compliment Ave! Sorry you were disappointed 🙁 I feel your pain! I wish these turned out better!

  • melanie

This look so unique and pretty! I especially like the pink and the beige colour.

  • Shana

I will never understand why they stopped selling them in the pots. I too have almost every color they had released and I use them pretty frequently. My ultimate favorite (and HG eye primer) is the limited edition shade Nude Pink. I use it pretty much every time I wear makeup and it keeps my eyeshadow looking amazing literally all day. Unfortunately I’m running out of it and I’m incredibly disappointed that I will never be able to purchase another one. I had asked Maybelline on twitter about it once and they confirmed they wouldn’t be making any new of the kind in pots anymore.

I think this was yet another “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” situation. The pots were incredible and in theory making them in pencil and liquid form is a great idea for application but the formulas just don’t live up to the original. I’m hoping maybe since these have been kind of a dud Maybelline will eventually bring back the pots– and hopefully make Nude Pink permanent!

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t either, they keep releasing different things under the Color Tattoo name when I personally think they should do more pots which I really love and use often!

      • Heather

I was so excited to try mine, I wish I would’ve read this review before I bought it! It was extremely chunky and dry..i was thinking someone bought it and returned it as I noticed the seal was broke:*(!!

  • Lisa

Could u tell me what kind of cream is used in the 24 hour chrome sticks, vs. the chrome tattoo jars?
Even though I do love both, I’d like to know?
    Thank you!

  • Liz

I had such high hopes for these as I looove the potted version. Thanks to you I can try something else (or try nothing new and save some $$$ but probably not)!
