Besame Cake Mascara

What’s old is new again! Besame Cake Mascara ($25) gets an introduction this Fall and acts not only as a water activated mascara but also can be used to fill brows and as an eyeliner too.

Many of you remember cake mascara at the drugstore! Personally, I don’t remember cake mascara myself but I do remember having a cake eyeliner which I absolutely adored. I actually never used it with water! I applied it dry and truly it was brilliant as it was one of the few eyeliners I was able to apply perfectly!

Besame Cake Mascara is a dry powder cake that’s activated with water. It comes with its own eyelash brush for application. Simply wet the brush, swipe it a few times through the powder cake and apply! The powder makes lashes longer and darker! Unlike a regular wand mascara, cake mascara can be built, layered, and reapplied without clumping or smudging. You can also use the powder to fill brows or even use it as an eyeliner simply wet an eyeliner brush, swipe through the powder, and apply to your lash line!

It also travels easily since you can apply it quickly and easily on the sly to add more depth and darkness to lashes!

Nifty right? It’ll be particularly great for those with blonde or lighter lashes as this is quite pigmented!

Besame Cake Mascara is $25 and available now at Sephora.com.

I wish more companies would bring this back. Right now, the only other ones I can think of are by La Femme and Longcils Boncza, which are also hard to find. Maybelline made a great one that came in a nifty little compact. The Besame packaging appears to be paper and that would not hold up under travel.

Ugh… can’t believe they would bring this back. Maybelline cake mascara was my very first makeup product, and the stuff sucks. I don’t care what they say – it’s clumpy, spidery, and will run in 6% humidity. No thanks…. I’ll stick to my wet wand mascaras – been there, done the cake mascara thing, and even when it was 99 it was overpriced.

I’ve never used cake mascara just a cake eyeliner that I think was made by Revlon! I gotta admit I’m still curious about Besame’s after your thoughts on the Maybelline as Besame has some incredible makeup products.

  • Robin

I’ve never heard of such. How do you use the brush? Like a wand or do you apply it to the top and bottom of lashes?

Are you going to review? I’m curious, but I may stick to my Wet n Wild! lol

    • Isabella Muse

Just wet the cake, strike it through the mascara, and simply swipe the brush through your lashes. I imagine from bottom swiped upwards would be the best technique! Sure am! I ordered on today 🙂

I’ll probably buy this just to display, a nostalgia thing. I spent a couple summers working as a tour guide in what was America’s longest running brothel. It closed in 1982 (I worked there long after that). The basement had been sealed long before that and the rooms were left as they had been. There were cake mascaras on several of the dressers.

Google Dumas Brothel. I’d link some articles if I wasn’t posting from my phone. Neat building, with a colorful history.

in Russia we have similar thing

it contains beewax, so it is not dry (can’t be used as a cake eyeliner I guess).
the formula is natural AF, and the color is intense black, but it’s not water-resistant at all. so it will definitely smudge in a humid weather. some women still use it though. they say it does wonders on certain type of eyelashes (and you can use any preferred mascara wand with it).
my uni friend told me you can apply a coat of regular mascara (from a tube) on top of it for longevity. the tube mascara will lock this one in place. maybe the same can be done to that Besame cake mascara.

    • Isabella Muse

Ah interesting, Ch! I wonder if this one contains beewax! Thanks for sharing!

  • Susan

I love the ’60s/’70s but this is one piece of nostalgia I can do without. Yuck.

  • Kris

I love cake mascara! Chanel used to sell cake mascara, back in the 80’s, I think. One of the colors available was purple–it was fantastic!

  • Dee

I remember maybelline cake mascara but have no desire to repurchase. I’ll stick with my clump crusher.

My grandma used the Maybelline cake mascara for *years* Even wrote to the company when it was discontinued and they sent her some. They brought it back for a few years in the 90s. I never tried it as it seemed like too much mess in the bathroom sink (though my gran was a clean freak so you only saw it when she was applying it) It’s one of those things that I’m glad is there for someone who wants to try to be authentic about their vintage looks.

  • kellly

Oh god I remember this from my MOM’s cosmetic stuff!! It’s been forever since I’ve seen cake mascara!! Not sure if this will offer any improvement over the tube and wand stuff but I bet Dita Von Teese swears by this stuff!!

  • Jodi

Beware! This will make the biggest mess ever! My “childhood memories” of cake mascara are less than fond! There’s good reasons that cake mascara was phased out!

  • Deby

When I was a very little girl, Maybelline made dry mascara in a slim little red box that slid open to reveal the brush and the cake of mascara. That was the only kind of mascara I remember seeing anyone use back then. It was neat and elegant. I’m glad to see someone is bringing this trend back.

  • Maria

Yeap! I am old enough that I used Maybelline. Just like Deby said-it came in a little red box. I remember it that it was hard to control the wetness but it worked very well. I would have to rinse the brush after use so it would not cake.
Way back then, my favorite was Helena Rubenstein mascara’s wand that had a metal spiral groove at the end. It made the longest lashes.

    • Pam A

I remember the Helena Rubenstein metal spiral groove mascara wand, too! You could get such precision with it! Twiggy eyes!

  • Pam A

OMG! How I loved cake eyeliner! Sigh!
My first mascara was cake mascara by Maybelline in a red, rectangular box.

  • Amanda

I totally don’t need this (though it would be interested in trying it as eyeliner). Honestly I just want it for the vintage vibe it has
