Kiehls Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil is a new mineral oil free formula that launched earlier this month. You might very well be familiar with Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate as it was a pioneer in the facial oil world and likely one of the first facial oils I ever tried out. Kiehl’s harnesses the powers of the pure botanical oils from their concentrate facial oil and pops them into this new cleansing oil to gently remove makeup as well as hydrate, sooth, and nourish skin.

Kiehls Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil ($32) apparently will put a stop do your double cleansing ways as the formula completely dissolves makeup without stripping and retains your skin’s natural pH Balance. One wouldn’t think that cleansing oil can dry your skin out but believe me it does. Some formulas are horrible on my drier skin and leave them feeling incredibly tight after use. I’m happy to say this didn’t dry me out at all.

This has a very thin, watery texture that feels oily during the initial application. The scent is a strong lavender scent which I found pleasant but some sensitive users might not love it. This does have lavender oil as we well as evening primrose oil. Lavender might prove irritating to certain skin types but I’ve never had an issue with it. Evening Primrose Oil is full of moisture as well as ceramides which makes it an excellent addition to this formula. Those seeking a mineral oil-free cleansing oil will be happy to know this contains none.

I wasn’t sure if the thinner consistency would do a good job removing my makeup. It’s very light and seems to absorb into skin as I massage it in! But it actually worked great even waterproof mascara removed easily. They actually recommend you pump a bit into a cotton pad and hold it to your eye to remove more stubborn eye makeup but rubbing it on worked just as well plus no stinging or blurry eye vision after. If you never used a cleansing oil keep in mind you apply it on drier skin and later add a small amount of water to emulsify the oil. The water breaks the oil down and it goes milky and rinses clean away. I think people have some rather weird misconstrued notions about cleansing oils making your skin oily or shiny. Believe me any skin type can use a cleansing oil without adding excess oil or shine to your face as the formula breaks down easily when water is added. Kiehls formula rinsed away easily and broke down my makeup completely without stripping my skin. I didn’t feel dry or tight after using nor was there any makeup remaining on my face (I typically use micellar water after as a test to see if any makeup remained after cleansing!).

Kiehls Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil is an excellent addition to my cleansing routine. No dryness, no tightness, and a clean, fresh face after makes this one worth a pick up.

Thanks for the review. I was wondering how good this would work and I’m glad it doesn’t sting or cause cloudy vision. This is on my wishlist after I finish the Nuance by Salma Hayak cleansing oil.

    Hi Isabella,

Thanks for the review of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil. I’ve planned to purchase this, but I was a bit apprehensive if I should. This gives me something to consider.
