I got my Sephora October Play Box on Friday and I thought I’d do a quick unboxing and mini review for you to share my thoughts on this month’s box! I missed out on doing the September unboxing as time got away with me! Sorry about that.

Let’s take a look at the Play by Sephora Box for October below!

The contents include:

  • Tom Ford Orchid Soleil Perfume (.05 oz)
  • Verb Leave-in Mist (1 oz)
  • Too Cool for School All-In-One Egg Mellow Cream (0.21 oz)
  • Skin Inc Pure Revival Peel (0.17 oz)
  • NudeStix Intense Matte Lip & Cheek Pencil in Belle
  • Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Driver’s Seat

This month’s box took away many of my complaints about the last few boxes, that compliant being that they contents are of products that are older or ones we’ve seen over and over again as samples and in other boxes. This month, they took the initiate to include something fairly new which was the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick. These new lipsticks just launched this Fall! My biggest rant about the Sephora Play Boxes is the fact they include older products that I’ve already tried. I personally think the box should be about introducing us to new items which is why I was happy they took the initiative to include the new Smashbox lipstick! I hope they continue to do this in the future.

I was also more than pleased with the skincare offerings in this box since I hadn’t tried either before. I was particularly curious about the Too Cool for School All-in-One Egg Mellow Cream which is a firming moisturizing that contains collagen. It’s been on my wish list a while so, I’m happy to be able to try a sample pout. I was also happy about the addition of Tom Ford’s newest fragrance, Orchid Soleil, although I think this would have been better suited to include in a Summer box.

The only item I didn’t love was the Leave-In Mist. I’m just not one to get excited about hair care! I wish they’d customize the boxes to not include hair care for those that aren’t interested.

All in all, for ten bucks, this month’s Sephora Play Box wasn’t too bad a box! Things seem to be picking up slowly and I have nothing major to complain about with this box. Considering I’ve only complained and ranted each box since starting my subscription this is good news right?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. This was my first box, but I got some different items from you. I got the same Smashbox lippie, but instead of the Nudestix, I got an Estee Edit clear gloss with blue pearl – meant to make teeth look whiter. I got a Madame CJ Walker coconut serum for hair instead of the Verb mist. I’d have preferred the mist, since my hair, while curly, is fine. I’m passing the serum on to my kids. I got a deluxe sample of Drunk Elephant AHA serum, which I’ve wanted to try. Even my perfume sample was different! I got Derek Lam 10 Crosby in Silent St. It’s nice, and even my sons are enjoying it.

All in all, I’m glad to have the box, even though I’m in the process of destashing some of my goodies to friends.

    • Isabella Muse

Yeah, it seems they send out two boxes every month! Apparently they customize it by skin type! I wish I got he Estee Edit Clear Gloss as I wasn’t to keen on the Nudestix. I love Silent St, I have a large bottle! such a beautiful fragrance but I fear it isn’t one to linger :-/ Sounds like a good box you got!

      • Kari Smits

I think there might actually be more than two boxes?? They sent me two this month (I have NO idea why) and my boxes were slightly different, but I don’t think I got the items you got. I will report what I got when I get home, but I would have LOVED the Too Cool for School sample as I have wanted to try that for awhile.

        • Isabella Muse

Yeah! Seems so! Interesting! I wonder if the base it somehow off our purchases?!

          • Kari Smits

Actually, that’s a good call, maybe they do? In one of my boxes, I got YSL Mon Paris sample, the estee lauder flash pro gloss, Christophe Robin regenerating mask, the Smashbox lipgloss that seems somewhat dry, Erborian skin reviving gel and Farmacy skin dew hydrating essence.
In my other box, I got Skin Inc Pure Revival Peel, the same Christophe Robin regenerating mask, blinc mascara, the YSL perfume again, Belif true cream aqua bomb, and the same Smashbox lipgloss that seems less dry.

Still don’t know why I got two boxes though!

I got the same box as terrierhead. I like the concept of the Smashbox lippie but HATE the color. So awful on me. And the Estee Edit lip gloss is really pretty bad too. It’s very sticky and honestly doesn’t do a darn thing as far as “whitening” (enormous eyeroll). The Farmacy facial mist smells nice but the spray bottle is terrible…it comes out like a fire hose!

But I really like the Derek Lam scent. The Drunk Elephant serum seems nice although I’ve only tried it once since I am careful to not go overboard with AHAs. And I love the Madame CJ Walker hair oil! It smells like heaven and really agrees with my curly hair (which is fine and dry). It is the one product I might actually end up with a full size of down the road.

I think I’m going to go check my Sephora profile again and make sure that it’s up to date so I get the box that will work best for me.

      • Isabella Muse

I didn’t like the Smashbo color either sadly! Kind of glad I didn’t get the Estee Edit Lipgloss now! The Derek Lam is love but I have the large one and trust me when I say don’t buy it, it has horrible throw and linger! 🙁

  • Kimmwc03

I got the same box as you. I noticed several people got the YSL Mon Paris perfume sample.

  • Tracy

I got a completely different box than both of you. I received Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Rare Prickly Pear Seed Oil, Skin Inc Pure Revival Peel, Belif the True Cream Aqua Bomb, Smashbox Always On Liquid Lip, Blinc Mascara Amplified and YSL Mon Paris. That’s strange how they do that.

    • Isabella Muse

hmmm! Interesting! I wonder if they somehow base it off our past purchases?

      • CL

They are supposed to use your Sephora profile, for example:
Skin : Sensitive, dry, oily, or combo
Skin Tone: Porcelain, fair, light, medium, etc.
And also your eye color & hair color, though I think they base it mostly (or they’re supposed to) on how you describe your skin.

    • AnniLau

I had the same items. I’ve tried the Belif Aqua Bomb before, so I know it’s too heavy for my combo skin, and I hated the color of Smashbox lip goop. Both were given away.

I haven’t been wild about any of my Play boxes, but this one was probably the most disappointing so far.

    • erinface

I got the same box as you did and after seeing the box Muse got, I’m so mad! This is the first time I’ve been not thrilled with a box. I sampled that Blinc mascara a few years ago and HATE IT, so that’s getting tossed. I also haven’t cared for any of the fragrances they’ve sampled, so this is an element I wish they’d let us opt out of.

  • Leticia

I got a bunch of different items in my Play Box, this month.

SMASHBOX Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Driver’s Seat. (Only item that was the same)
THE ESTEE EDIT BY ESTEE LAUDER Flash Photo Gloss.
ERBORIAN Bamboo Creme Frappe Skin Reviving Fresh Gel.
    FARMACY Skin Dew Mist.
CHRISTOPHE ROBIN Regenerating Mask with Rare Prickly Pear Seed Oil. (Hair mask)
    YVES SAINT LAURENT Mon Paris.

I would have loved to try that Nudestix though 🙂

    • Randi MacDonald

I got the same box Leticia did. I have dry skin and I’m 49. I wonder if that makes a difference.

    • Gillie

This is the one that I got, too!

I’m having a great time seeing what everyone else has received, but I’m so glad it seems like they’ve finally started customizing boxes based on profiles. YAY! 🙂

  • Anna Fantasia

I was actually disappointed with this box, but only because the original video that they sent to accompany this box had an item in it I was so excited to try by Christophe Robin. I was deflated when a link was sent to a second video (2 days later) which had the prickly Pear Regenerating Mask no where in it, And I can’t just go spending $72 on something that might not work for me. Oh well…

  • Carol G

Yep, I got different stuff as well. Interesting…I figured it would just be the same across the board like a Target box but apparently there is a method to their madness. This was my first box with them so I was surprised when I saw this post and you had different items shown.

    • Isabella Muse

yeah, looks like there’s a few boxes in rotation! Apparently it is based on skin types but that doesn’t explain the different perfume samples!

  • CL

I got the same mix of items you did. That Smashbox lipstick looks awful on me – kind of brick/orange/brown. The Nudestix also looks kind of dull brick orange on me. One of the skincare items has alcohol in it, which is damaging to skin. And that Tom Ford scent is awful . I wish I could have gotten the skincare items and the YSL perfume in the Sephora demo video. They are supposed to send you a box of items consistent with your profile on Sephora. Mine says sensitive combo skin, so they should have known not to send me that item with alcohol in it. I decided to cancel my membership after I received this box.

    • Isabella Muse

aw sorry CL! I wasn’t too impressed with the sades either! Give the Tom Ford a little time, as it warms on skin it becomes much nicer! I’m on the verge of cancelling as well but I keep hanging in for something awesome!

  • Christina

I got the exact same box as you Muse…I had not been impressed by any of the prior three boxes I received and October was going to be make or break. I do like most of the items and think this one was definitely worth $10 so I’ll keep up my subscription (for a few more months anyway).

    • Isabella Muse

Likewise! I’m still hanging in there, hoping for something to wow me! This month wasn’t too bad and I was happy with the contents!

  • Abbey

I received the Drunk Elephant serum sample, and it by itself was enough to keep my subscription. True love!

  • Onyx

I WISH I’d gotten the egg cream. I got that bamboo stuff, and it doesn’t work for me at all.

  • Leela Daphne

Hi! Do you know if the nudestix sample can be sharpened? If so, what kind of sharpener will work? Thanks!
