Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Lips for Spring 2017

Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Lips ($60) bring me back to some of my first experienced with makeup. Help a sister out to jog her memory here, remember Revlon or was it Covergirl had powder lipsticks? They were duos if I remember right and each compact had a powder lipstick and a balm that would set the lipstick. I’m thinking it was Revlon or maybe Covergirl that made them. This had to be the mid-90s or so!

Earlier last year, Milk Makeup released their powder Lip Pigments and I think it was the first time in a very long time that powder lipstick actually made a come back. Sadly, the world is lacking in the powder lipstick department.

Until now anyway because Tom Ford has a few shades of their new Shade & Illuminate Lips Palettes up for grabs for Spring 2017 and just looking at them brings back so many feel good makeup memories.

The palettes include a light and a dark shade selection that helps in shaping and contouring lips. Hell, I can’t contour my face never mind my lips but I’m tempted by these highly pigmented, matte finish powder none the less. You can use both shades to create either a subtle or dramatic ombre or you can be as n00b-ish as I am and just use the colors individually. The formula is a hybrid powder-gelee (sounds like Estee Lauder Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee) that contains emoillet oils and a blend of polymers that allow the powder to adhere comfortably to lips.

There are six duos available from nudes to gorgeous hues of berry and red.

You can snag Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Lips now at nordstrom.com.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Long ago in the 80s, Borghese had powder lip color in a compact like this.

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t remember that one but I keep thinking of a revlon one or a covergirl one 😀

      • Gillie

You’re not imagining that. I remember those! I feel like it was covergirl, but I could be wrong, too. I had the best dark rose with gold shimmer in it.

          • Isabella Muse

            THAT’S IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you! ;-D

I’m glad the shade ranges of I’m glad that shade ranges are improved so that women darker than tan have a shot at finding a color in a mainstream brand, but I would love to go trawling through the color archives for some of these companies.

          • Christina

Yes!!!! For some reason, I was just thinking about these the other day – and had no idea about the Tom Ford ones!!

          • Gillie

haha, you’re welcome! Thank you for the nostalgia. That was one of my first “grown-up” makeup purchases.

I wasn’t going to be able to go on with my day unless I found it. I’m not OCD or anything. 😉

          • Isabella Muse

That was really a great blast from the past 😀 I need to see if there’s a commercial for them on youTube 😀 haha I was googling madly but couldn’t find anything, you saved the day and my sanity!

Wow- thank you ladies for finding this old CoverGirl product! I remember I had one of these as well…brings back memories! 🙂

I wouldn’t attempt use on eyes, they were created for lips, as I’m not sure what sort of pigment they are using (some pigments are not eye safe especially red ones), it could potentially be bad for your eyes.

      • lizziefs

Thanks for the response. They look so much like eye shadows 🙂 I didn’t realize they were lipsticks and when you mentioned “powder” I thought hmmm red eye shadows are all the rage now and its a trend I’m loving. I missed out on the Honeymoon quad and I’m kicking myself for letting the opportunity pass. I just saw swatches of these and they look very emollient more like a lipstick.

        • Isabella Muse

no problem 🙂 I mentioned a few times they were powder lipsticks, not eyeshadows 🙂 I’d love to have a bright a red as this for my eyes, totally can relate and happy to see a lot of brands doing red outside of Asia at the moment as I think red is really a great shade on eyes. I wouldn’t chance using these on your eyes though, not sure if the pigment they use is eye safe :-/ They have a gel texture, so they have the look and initial feel of a powder but apply with a more gel-like consistency on lips! They look quite gorgeous!

Cover Girl! I used my big sister’s little compact. I don’t even remember if it was decent (also, it’s not like a seven year old needs to wear any, let alone a “decent” formula), but I had been hoping it would come back. Cle Cosmetics has one, but I’m not wild about the colors.

    • Isabella Muse

It was covergirl?! I wasn’t sure 😀 By the way, never heard of Cle Cosmetics haha now I have something new to explore thanks!

  • blee

Wow, those are some beautiful colors! But, mattes. 🙁 Musey, girl will you be getting any of them for a review?

    • Isabella Muse

I have my eye on them ;-D debating if I really need to splurge though 😀 But will review if I do indulge!

  • Gloria

I see that the description says powder-gelèe formula and I was excited too but Temptalia has them swatched and sadly, they just look like lipstick in a pan form to me.

So powder lipsticks are making a comeback it seems. Was on the Sephora site yesterday and they have a version although it is in stick form, not a flat palette like these. Also, it was Covergirl who had a powder lipstick a long, long time ago. It didn’t really work well but at the time I thought it was a unique product since I had never seen a powder lipstick. I was very tempted to purchase the Sephora one the other day but didn’t because I’m afraid it will be uncomfortable and drying on the lips. Have to wait for some reviews I guess.

  • Holly Murphy

It was Covergirl. I remember it well, because I still mourn for it, lol.

  • varya

Those are too,too beautiful…I can’t and so didn’t resist. ps-off to buy more lip scrub because I think I’m going to need it.

  • Lesley A.

Feeling dumb, I thought these were eyeshadows, especially since red and orange eyeshadow shades have been trendy lately. Now I am curious to see how these perform on the lips. There is probably a good color payoff but I wonder if they are drying.

  • JULIE Fielding

OMG, I used to love those! I remember the Borghese ones, and Muse, you might remember a trio with 2 intense lip powder stains and a gloss in a round compact from Morgen Schick on HSN maybe 8 ish years ago (Oh, I miss her!). Okay, is it me, or does Christie Brinkley still look the same even though she is 60+??!! Jealous….oh, and now my husband said she just had her 63rd birthday a few days ago!!

    • Isabella Muse

omg julie stop, I miss Morgen so much! I’m trying to remember her powder stains, I don’t recall! Although I do remember when the balm had a duo of lip stains! 😀 haha YES! she’s like immortal!

      • JULIE Fielding

Okay, I just pulled mine out (serious dust alert!), and it is called “Morgen True Color High Pigment Lip Powder Trio” in Plum Frosting, Cinnamon & Barely Berry Lip Glaze. I tried, but couldn’t find any pics on the internet…it was a goodie, and now I’ll clean it off and try it again! xoxo

        • Isabella Muse

LOL omg take a photo! I still have schick sticks but I won’t use them, TOO old! I loved her concealer/foundation palette back in the day, was so brilliant! It was all I used as a base!

  • Jes

Thank you for posting this! I do remember the powder lipstick from CG. I loved them.

I ordered this as soon as I read this in Tantalize. It is really lovely. Creamy matte, with almost no scent, and the brush/sponge applicator makes it easy to apply. I ordered Saboteur already.
