Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm Review & Swatches

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm ($3.99) is one of several new lip balms that the brand introduced recently to their permanent collection which tempted me because I’m a lip balm aficionado (aka obsessed lip balm user).

It’s funny as I was at Ulta recently and was shocked, surprised, and rather delighted that they had so many of the latest Shea Moisture products. Of course, I was instantly drawn to the new Shea Butter Lip Balms but the price wasn’t listed and I was having a senior moment and thought they were $8.99 each. So, I sat there for several precious minutes deciding if I really needed a nine dollar lip balm. Somewhere between my stomach rumbling demanding I go meet my best friend for dinner and my illogical just buy it side, I ended up striding to the cashier register to pay for it before I decided I didn’t need another expensive lip balm. Turns out it was $3.99 duh! Needless to say, I was all excited that the price was so sweet. I have no idea why I was set on believing it was nine bucks.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

As for my review, that’s found below.

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm is a slightly uneventful lip balm if you’re expecting some sort of yummy, flavored treat for your lips. You have to admit Shea Moisture’s products smell as good as Carol’s Daughter products sometimes. So, of course, being the fragrance fan I am I don’t necessarily mind flavor or fragrance in my skincare, lip care, etc…! I had visions of their lip balms being tasty treats. Ahh, well, I only got one and it doesn’t taste like coconut, hibiscus, nor the combined. It’s actually flavorless, well, it kind of has a cardboard-like taste but definitely no coconut.

Oh well, I’m cool with that.

How’s the formula?

It’s alright. I couldn’t helping thinking much it reminded me of thick vaseline but hey, if you have chapped and dry lips it’s a yay. It’s very thick and it doesn’t squeeze out of the tube very well. You have to use a good deal of strength to get the product flowing into the slanted applicator. It takes a little work to get this one flowing.

The formula reminds me a dense vaseline with a thicker consistency that lays on top of lips and never full absorbs. It’s a little tacky but not really sticky. It might prove a nice night treatment but considering the thickness it’ll be a pain to sleep in it without getting it all over your pillow case. It kind of gave me a bad case of dry mouth. Don’t get me wrong, it felt really good on my chapped, dry lips and even softened and smoothed them. But I couldn’t helping thinking I have a hundred different lip balms that did a far better job that didn’t lay on top of my lips in such a unnatural way.

Mmmmm….!

It’s ok, not really the best lip balm I ever tried in my life but not the worst either. I think I expected something more from Shea Moisture for some reason. This was a little too thick for my tastes. Something a little less thick would go over a little bit better for me.

Have you tried these yet?

Hmmm… y’know, for a measly $3.99, I might give this a whirl. I got a *teensy* sample of a lip balm whose primary ingredient is castor oil, and I really liked it, so – for the sheckels, I may just jump on this ‘un and see if I like it 🙂

Didn’t even know it was out there – Thanks Muse!

honestly, at this price, go for it. It’s actually good, it hydrates well and it leaves lips soft. But it’s just so damn thick and uncomfortable to wear. It kind of left me with a dry mouth feeling, weird I know but true 😀 My pleasre!

So glad you reviewed this. It has been on my favorites list for a few weeks now at Ulta but I was just waiting until the 21 days of beauty started to throw it on with an order. I’m kinda glad to hear it is thick, as I like thicker lip balms but I, too, had visions in my head that this would taste fantastic because of the name. I’m still going to buy it because it’s at least reasonably priced.

I really thought they’d be flavored! I was a little surprised! If you’re ok with thicker balms you’ll like it I’m sure 😀

I got them at Target for the same price. I got the Water Mint & Ginger and Fruit Fusion Coconut Water(has lychee, dragonfruit, mangosteen extract). I do agree it does not absorb and just sits there but not in a bad bad way. A little goes a long way because of how thick it is. The smell of the fruit fusion is amazing but I am pretty meh about the mint.

    • Isabella Muse

Agreed! Not bad but not as great as I had hoped for. Hmm You have me curious about fruit fusion now because coconut & hibiscus had no flavor at all :-/

I got the water mint and ginger version. It doesn’t knock my socks off, but it’s better than quite a few lip balms I’ve tried. One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that it’s so thick that I keep having to shove the applicator tip back in, as the pressure from squeezing the tube forces it out because the balm is so thick. So be careful you don’t squeeze so hard that it shoots out and you get balm all over!

    • Isabella Muse

I was thinking overtime it might become harder and harder to get it out of the tube because it seems to almost harden!? It’s odd. It’s super thick. It’s def softening and soothing but the texture is a little too heavy for me.

I’m a nut over a good lip balm and have tried lots of them. Jack Black still seems to be my favorite. I was wondering what your favorite one is? I want my lips to feel moisturized and smooth. Needing to pick a new one up but feeling like I would like to try something new. I don’t mind fragrance or flavor actually prefer my cosmetics to have those things, just my preference. I’m a girl like that. TIA for any input.

If you don’t mind spending the $$$, I love, use, and have repurchased Hourglass No 28 Lip Treatment Oil. It’s my absolute favorite lip softening, soothing, and hydrating product of all time -D

I really like thicker lip balms. My current favorite is Paula’s Choice. I’ve also tried the Bite Beauty agave lip mask (free sample size) and like that one as well, but not as much as the Paula’s Choice one. I also prefer my lip balm to be unscented, so I would consider the lack of fragrance in this balm to be a big plus. What would you compare this lip balm to? What is it most like? Paula’s Choice products have become too expensive for me, so I’m always on the hunt for cheaper alternatives.

    • Isabella Muse

It’s a lot like Jack Black’s lip balm in formula, a good deal thicker, I actually compared it to a thicker, denser vaseline in my post 🙂 It does have a similar texture to Bite Beauty’s Lip Mask as well! Hope this helps!

I found mine to actually have a very strong, fruity scent! I am not in love with it, not enough staying power.

  • Renelis

I tried it too and it was thick and I felt it did nothing to my lips, like many other lip balms I’ve tried (must of them moisturize your lips and make them feel less dry), but this one just sat there on my lips the whole day doing nothing XD

I got this one and another of the flavors, and hated them both. Well, technically I guess I can’t say I hated one of them, since I couldn’t get any to come out of the damn tube! The formula on these is rock friggin solid, it’s so stupid! I ended up returning them both. Would rather stick with Chapstick, for a buck or so each I never have any problems with them.
