Do You Struggle Finding Your Crease?

Do you struggle finding your crease? That sounds like something right out of Girls. I’m talking about your eye crease obviously not other intimate areas ahem…! I personally have Mimi syndrome. My upper eye area is smooth and high but I don’t have much of a crease. I always find it difficult applying darker, contrasting shade in my crease because I fear I’ll go to high and end up looking like Mimi from Drew Carey.

For example, this morning I wanted to do a purple pink eyeshadow look. My plan was to apply pink on my lids and purple in my crease. But it just doesn’t come out right for me! Which means I end up applying the purple in my outer v and stroked a little upward.

I’ve come to the conclusion I either suck at eyeshadow application or I simply can’t find my crease.

Do you struggle finding your crease?

Any tips or tricks for finding it?

Or maybe you struggle with some other eyeshadow issues or like maybe you suck at liquid eyeliner application!

Do share!

I have a hard time with my v. I have hooded eyes and not much space.

      • Dale

Trace brush from inside corner around into and upside c or two fingertips from where your eyelashes start … just above index finger is your crease.. if that make sense

    • Annie

      > I have hooded eyes and not much space.

I also have hooded eyes and have no shame doing what’s essentially a toned-down version of what Mimi Bobek does with her blue shadow – for hooded folks, putting eyeshadow higher looks MUCH tamer.

  • Christina Tran

I have a smaller crease, so the trick is to find your orbital bone and use that as your crease indicator. It should be a little higher than your natural crease, but not so high that you’ll look like Mimi. LOL! If all else fails, just keep blending and doing a gradiant of colors going lighter as you go up! The other option is to do a cut crease, but that’s so much more time consuming!

    • Isabella Muse

I swear my orbital bone is like in my forehead lol! I have such a high eye area!

      • Christina Tran

LOL! This comment made me laugh so hard! Looking at your pictures, I don’t think your brow bone looks too high up, and, in fact, I would love to have that much space to work with! LOL! I always considered your eye shape more ideal for applying eyeshadow, but I guess it comes with its own set of problems.

        • Isabella Muse

believe me you don’t! I always end up going rogue Mimi because I have too much space to play with 😀

    • Sheree

My orbital bone is literally in my eyebrow. No way would this work for me.

  • Maria

Me. I do the easy way. Color on lid. Darker shade on crease area and light shade on brow bone. I do not go by orbital bone or cut crease. I blend and blend and then add mascara and liner. Always use eye primer. I do my best.

  • Laurie

Since my eyelids began to fall (they have not gotten up, btw), this has become a major issue. I’ve needed to learn an entirely new way to apply my eyeshadow, and I too live in horror of looking like Mimi. I’ve simply decided to use my eye socket, and when it seems I’ve gone too high, I put a tiny brush into eye makeup remover and swipe some away. Which means trying to reapply primer, so I’ve basically stopped priming all the way to my brow bone. Great blog!

    • Isabella Muse

I’m always worried about that. I have such a high eye area I cringe at the thought of them falling at some point and losing elasticity. And I understand what you mean totally. When I started developing finer lines under my eyes I really had to relearn how to apply concealer. It was kind of shocking for some reason! Thanks xox! 🙂 thanks for sharing too!

      • Laurie

I have a tremendous amount of real estate up there because I have large eyes, thankfully, so I’m not quite hooded yet, but in the past two years, after having very little aging, it all hit at once. That’s the scary part; you think you’re staving it off, but eventually, gravity takes its toll. Thank you for your blog; I really appreciate the combination of Korean, high-end and drugstore product launch and review information. It’s incredibly useful.

        • Isabella Muse

I don’t I’m hooded at all just a lot of space and no crease lol! I have this fear! It’s so damn real! I worry about all that extra spacing just dropping one day. I’ll wake up and it’ll just get all crepy and saggy! Sigh I guess that’s part of aging right? awww thank you for reading my blubbering 🙂 xoxoxo!

My brushes that say “crease brush” seem way too large to fit in my crease. I use what is called “pencil brush” (I think. . . fatter than a liner brush, but thinner than my other brushes) if I want to really do a crease color. And blend blend blend blend blend.
Muse I need help, eyelid-related. I accidentally got a tiny bit of an exfoliation serum on my upper lid, several days ago. It hurt and I tried to get it off, and thought I was all set. Forgot about it by the next day. But now, the whole lid is swollen and irritated and just awful. This started yesterday, slightly better today, but still noticeable. What can I do to help soothe this delicate area ASAP? I remember you had an irritated eyelid issue at some point; did you find anything to help, or just time? I’m on day 2 of no eyeshadow or liner, but really want to wear some tonight and this weekend. Upside, I’m being WAY more careful about how I apply serums. This was bound to happen, with the sloppy way I had been slapping them on.

    • Isabella Muse

I use one of those too, it’s pointed! perfect for my crease. First off you def should see your doctor JUST in case. Secondly, vaseline is a god sent. it’s basically what I relied on with stuff went crazy for me!

    • Christina Tran

Ouch! I have sensitive skin, so I get flare ups a lot, even on my eyelids. My derm told me to use hydrocortisone sparingly and in a lower concentration; just a little to bring down inflammation. And, of course, do not get it in your eye. Other than that, I’ve tried chamomile tea and green tea bags to soothe the area!

      • Isabella Muse

or on your lid, it can absorb into your eye via the delicate screen of your lid and that could cause further problems!

    • Lesley A.

I have the same problem with the too-fat crease brushes. I have been loving this one. It’s called a cut crease brush but I don’t actually do a cut crease, I just use it as a regular crease brush but the shape is perfect: http://www.sigmabeauty.com/e62-cut-crease/p/E62. It’s very flat, for those of us with finer creases 🙂

  • Marie

I’m Asian and my eyelid area is totally flat, I don’t have a crease at all LOL! The struggle is real!

    • Isabella Muse

Asian eyes are so exotic and so beautiful but honestly, mad props to Asian ladies and guys all around because it has to be challenging to apply eye makeup! I can’t apply false lashes, I could just imagine having using eyelid tape!

    • Victoria

I’m Asian as well. I have a fold in my eye lids but my lids are puffy and hooded. Everything I do for creating a crease disappear the second I open my eyes so I don’t even try to find my crease anymore. I follow Korean makeup artists on how to apply eye shadows and it is totally different from western style!

If you haven’t yet, check out Pony and Jung Saem Mool. They do cool stuff!

  • Chris

Where the upper lid meets the lower brow area is where the crease is for the darker eye shadow application with my eye shadow brush. It’s where the orbital bone is too.

  • Mia

So much yes!! I have the same issue – my brows are so high up! Like you, I only do the shadow V. If I try a smokey eye, I end up looking totally batshit crazy. SO jealous of the people who can pull off amazing color combos and smokey eyes :/

  • Michelle

OMG MEEEEEEE!!! I see all these AMAZING girls with AMAZING eyeshadow. I watched COUNTLESS YouTube videos and tutorials. I’ve purchased just about every high-end palette. And spent more than I care to admit on the best brushes I could, just trying to accomplish anything in the vicinity of what these other girls can. Just to come to the realization that I’m an epic fail. The more I blend, the more it all just becomes a blob of the same color. When I try to do anything that resembles not one giant blur, it looks like I learned color by number in clown makeup class.

Needless to say, I have countless palettes and high-end brushes just sitting in the bottom of a drawer in my bathroom. 🙁

    • Cil

Me too! In my case, i have super hooded, super oily, super watery eyes. It is a no go for eyeshadows, but, before i realized this I spent serious $. At least the primers i used in my brows because none of them worked (UD, Nars, TheBalm, PaintPot, Ruby Rose, WetnWild, Nyx HD). I just use eyeliner (inglot 77 and marc jacobs crayon in blacquer) and mascara (maybelline waterproof).

  • Brandy

My crease is like a coin slot it’s so deep. My issue is trying to make my eyes appear slightly smaller because they’re a little too big in an alien kind of way. Lots of black eyeliner and dark brown eye shadows seem to help them look normal size. My eye doctor actually suggested I have gold weights inserted into my eyelids to make them droop a little bit.

      • Brandy

Yeah. The gold weights would make my eyes not look so wide. It just sounds crazy, and I would be worried about the side effects. Like what if the weights are too heavy and I have trouble opening them. It would be a constant work out for my eyelids just to blink.

  • Chris

I can relate but I’m probably old enough to be your mother lol first I really enjoy your blog ok my scenario is I have small hooded aging eyes with that being said I too have to do my eye makeup a little differently then let’s say jacklyn hill as a reference first I use a painterly then I take wet and wild brûlée to set it if I don’t my shadow will skip then for my crease which is none existent I will start with my transition shade I use Mac 217 I will look straight into a mirror and apply the shadow at first to my hood then I will then blend it into my real crease the transition is usually a light to mid tone color it helps to recede my hood then I continue with eye lid color then outer v which for my is almost a 7 lol once again because of my eye shape you look like you have a decent sized eye that is deepest so in a sense you would have to bring your transition shade almost to your brow bone I never put a super dark color as a transition and if I don’t do what I explained you can’t see anything unless my eyes are shut lol I hope that helps

    • Isabella Muse

oh stop, I doubt it, I’m older than you might think hehe 😀 god I envy her! Everything just looks perfect on her eyes, I just have too much upper eye space to work with. I think you’re right about bringing it more up but I’m ALWAYS so scared to do that end up looking like mimi!

      • Isabella Muse

ps thanks for all those tips super helpful for hooded eyes!

        • Chris

Your welcome I do have a youtube channel for mature women it’s chrisann acanfora I haven’t made videos in a while! But I am going to try and get back into it!!!I am subbed to you and really get excited because you have dry skin like myself and I enjoy all your reviews you should do a youtube channel I think you would be fabulous yeah jacklyn has a great eye shape but it’s a matter of working with what you have I don’t do winged liner tho it could be done on a hooded eye but since my eyes are small it takes up too much of my lid space once again lol I just started about five years ago wearing shimmer on my lid seriously I thought it would make my aging eyelids look worse which it doesn’t anyway thank you again for your great blog looking forward to your next email wooohooo lol have a good weekend

          • Isabella Muse

Awesome, I’ll check it out 🙂 Aw thanks 🙂 Skin twins! I did videos like 10 years ago but never ventured back in again as I just don’t have the time unfortunately. Life, full time job, blog, plus videos is too much for me to take on 🙂 Maybe one day! I’m a horror show with winged eyeliner ha! But honestly, I always tell everyone that anyone can wear shimmer in the right amounts 🙂 aw thank you! It’s lovely talking to you! Have a great weekend!

  • Bonnie Levy

Thank you so much for all of your hard work. I look so forward to your obviously time consuming posts, research, comments, and reviews. Thanks to you, at the ripe old age of 50, I am finally getting the hang of makeup and skincare. Yes, better late than never!!!
The only negative is that, after years of almost never shopping at Sephora, I just became a VIP Rougue. Not really something to be proud of
You must single handedly be responsible for 1/2 of their VIPs!! Let alone Ulta and drugstores. They should be thanking you as well

    • Isabella Muse

aww bonnie thank you so much, this was very flattering to read 🙂 YAY!!!!!!!!!! good for you! 😀 and it’s not late at all 😀 LOL omg I’d say sorry but t least you’re having fun right? 😀

  • Jes

Hahahahaha. This post made me laugh. I’m Asian with monolids. No creases, just fatter and puffier monolids as I get older. Soon, I won’t be able to see.

    • Isabella Muse

oh god forbid!! ice cold water, wash cloth, lay it over your eyes 🙂 I puff up too! No monolids but still puffy 😀

  • Susan

This post is funny, in a good way. Is there ANYBODY who loves everything about the size or shape of her eyes/eyelids? Probably not.

I too, am in the **ahem** older demographic. It’s true that one often loses the fat pads around one’s orbital bones over time, especially if you’re already rather thin to begin with. I don’t have droopy eyelids at all (yay) but do have very sunken-looking eyes (boo) now. Seriously, call me Skeletor. I don’t dare put a dark shade in my crease or the undertaker will come and get me early! Light shades of eye shadow are my new BFFs.

    • Isabella Muse

WATER! 🙂 drink more water! Sunken eyes will look plush again!

      • Susan

Oh, if only it were that easy! 😀 Nope, age-related sunken eyes seem to run in the family. But really, lighter shades of eye shadow do help.

        • Isabella Muse

I totally get it, I have sunken in eyes myself, not aged related, just the way they are! Concealer typically helps a lot and I agree lighter shades make everything look nice and lifted!

  • Mrs C M Dyson

Hi, maybe its time to change up your eye cream? Something that depuffs or lifts?

    Love your wonderful blog x

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks Mrs C so glad you enjoy Musings. Already using one that promises to depuff and lift 🙂

  • Silvia

God of the evil devil knows how many thousands of YouTube videos I have patiently watched dreaming of performing the correct smoky eye. I do have my crease and hooded eyes near the corner coming soon with age. No doubt! But each time I have tried to put that darker color it turns out a blob of a mess when I blend all the colors. Never been even a bit successful! Lol! I give up! I’ll just wear thecdarker color all over my eyelid and lighter on what left I have under the brows and prevent looking like a bird of paradise or my cute coctatiel. I tried the brushes of the brushes. Gave up and tried instead my pinkie finger I think it worked better but still a hot mess so I give up with a heavy heart. I do like my skinny Elf brush one for eyelining though but rarely do bottom of eyes afraid of overdoing it with approaching older age.

  • Silvia

Oops! Meant God or… Lol! Both are equally against me on smoky eyes applications.

  • Wendy

would you believe me if I told you that I close my eyes when applying shadow to my crease and just allow my brush to use the brow bone as a my guide. Ever since I started doing it that way, my eye shadow has been much better. I have heavily hooded eyes and cannot visually see a crease, so I have to “feel” for it LOL

    • Isabella Muse

Hmm interesting! 😀 All this use the brow bone as a guide has me curious to try it out for myself!

  • Wendy

I love this site. I love the people on this site. I love the Muse and I’m so happy to learn I’m not the only mature women that follows this blog <3
