Play by Sephora The Iconic Edition Worth $20? Probably Not!

I purchased this item and I receive a small commission if you shop using the links in this post.

Play by Sephora The Iconic Edition is a new $20 VIB Rouge Exclusive limited edition beauty box filled with luxury and high-end deluxe samples that launched last week. Mind you this is not a subscription box like the normal $10 Play by Sephora Beauty Boxes are. This was a one off that sold out rather fast but I mused in an earlier post that I felt like Sephora might be testing the water with this box and might potentially offer it as a monthly beauty box subscription or perhaps do other boxes like it seasonally.

One of the main complaints about the box was it was available for VIB Rouge Members only. This alienated a good deal of makeup lovers especially those on a budget who wanted to take advantage of a luxury box that contained higher-end deluxe samples at a more affordable price. If you don’t shop counter makeup often this was a nice way to try certain brands like Guerlain, Tom Ford, etc….

Unfortunately, Sephora limited the purchase of the Iconic Edition Play Box to VIB Rouge Members. Hopefully they’ve learned from the mistake because there was quite an outcry on their website within the review section of people complaining about this and the next time around it will be offered to everyone. Honestly, VIB Rouge status really doesn’t do me any great favors aside from the free flash shipping but even that’s not too big a deal since it only cost $10 a year for Flash anyway. Being offered a $20 Play Box because I’m a VIB Rouge Member isn’t doing me any great favors.

So, Play by Sephora The Iconic Edition worth $20? Probably not.

Here’s why.

I’m torn about this box on a few different levels. In some ways, I thought it was a nice selection of products and in other ways I felt like it wasn’t worthy $20. It deserves to be mentioned I was never a really happy Play Box Member and I reviewed quite a few of my Play Boxes before throwing the towel in and calling it a day because a lot of what they sent my way wasn’t really “new” or exciting. I think the same holds true for the Iconic Edition Box. There’s nothing in this box I haven’t already tried. Newness aside though, I also couldn’t help but think every single item in here was very easy to get for free at Nordstrom as a sample from any number of the counter girls and guys I deal with. Honestly, if you go to a higher-end counter, express interest in a product, and kindly ask for a sample you’ll likely get it. There are exceptions to that rule as sometimes you’ll run across some rude as hell MUA but many are quite nice and willing to give you a sample if you ask nicely.

Sephora went a little overboard with packaging on this as they do with all Play Boxes. This arrived in a larger brown box, inside was the standard smaller black box and inside that was a plastic gold zippered makeup bag that contained the samples. There’s also special edition Iconic Edition booklet that reads like a copy of YM Magazine with a quiz to determine your beauty personality. I seriously felt like I was 12 again reading this.

The newest product you’ll find in this box would be Dior Poison Girl (0.17 oz) which for me isn’t even new since I got my hands on a bottle of it last year at Duty Free. Other items include La Mer Cream (.24 oz) which is an obvious nod and pitch that Sephora now carries La Mer products. There’s a pink YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick (Shade 49) that wasn’t terribly flattering on my lips. Other items included a small Tom Ford Black Orchid rollerball, Burberry Cat Lashes Mascara, and Guerlain L’Or Radiance Concentrate Makeup Base.

If you visit high-end counters enough you probably already have a lot of these samples hanging out in your draw. I have tons of the smaller La Mer Creams in a bag in my beauty closet. There’s nothing groundbreaking in the box but it is a nice selection of higher-end samples. I just question whether or not you really need to spend $20 to get your hands on these.

Should the Play by Sephora The Iconic Edition return it might be appealing pick for higher-end makeup and beauty lovers or it may be something you shrug your shoulders at like I did. I already have a lot of what was available in this box so, it doesn’t feel new or fresh to me.

Did you buy it?

What did you think about it?

Would you like to see Sephora offer a monthly $20 Play Box?

It’s out of stock now but hopefully it restocks at Sephora.com if you are interested.

Personally, I almost find sephora a bit of a joke. Probably for the last two years I RARELY end up leaving the store with a purchase. I feel like they’re slightly out of touch. Take this box for example, what kind of selection is this, I feel that lipstick wouldn’t work on a lot of skin tones and la mer is clearly not a moisturizer for all skin types which I feel is important for people who are trying out a blind sample box so they can actually use what they get. Not to mention they seem rather late on the guys wear makeup these days memo, everything is marketed as so feminine which is fine but it would be nice to see SOME inclusion here and there.

    • Isabella Muse

I don’t the actual store and selection are out of touch. They rotate brands/products pretty well and I honestly can’t say I ever leave without a purchase! Lord I WISH that happened a lot more than it does haha! I agree on the moisturizer and the lipstick but I don’t think men are completely left out here. The primer, mascara, and tom ford fragrance is pretty unisex don’t you think? It’s not a complete foo foo selection of girly makeup and beauty.

      • Jeremy

You’re right! I actually didn’t even think of that I was just stuck on the fragrances and lipstick (not to mention the ym style quiz) admittedly I just woke up which makes me slightly grumpy bear-esque

        • Isabella Muse

ha it’s ok! I totally understand, I’m not a morning person. The lipstick is utter crap, it’s a shade not everyone will be able to pull off :-/ Tom Ford Black Orchid is fairly unisex in my opinion. I think it smells great on men as well as woman! lol the YM quiz totally made me roll my eyes, I swear I felt 12 again!

          • Jeremy

… The 12 year old in me is curious to know your quiz results Bwahahaha

          • Isabella Muse

LOL!!!! I’m such a grump I didn’t even take the quiz. I was like oh jesus and tossed it back in the box!

          • Isabella Muse

apparently I’m “Poised and Polished” lol what a load of BS!

  • Jeremy

LOL!!! Im the kind of grump that would be grumbling the whole time I took it cos my curiosity always wins Hahaha

    • Isabella Muse

LOL the questions are crazy dumb which would make you even more grumpy. Your Most Worn Lip Products: a. bright class red b. lip balm with berry tint c. a never fail shade of pink d. a deep almost purple liquid lipstick. They should have a freaking e. none of the freaking above lol!

  • Jeremy

She’s polished and she’s poised, she’s miss underwhelmed luxury box! *mascara tears*

  • Liz

If you are VIB Rouge you likely have a ton of points, it would have been nice if this would have been offered as a point perk instead of charging $20 for it.

I bought this box primarily to try LaMer…. there isn’t a counter anywhere near me and I am not paying the price on the website… and I don’t trust the Amazon samples of it. The rest of it was eehhh… The lipstick went immediately into the trash… I don’t know if I have ever seen anybody wear that neon pink color, at least not outside of Halloween. I will try the fragrances and the mascara…And I agree … that book was a waste of time…. I doubt I will have any use for that gold makeup pouch… Unless there was really something I wanted to try like the LaMer in the special edition boxes,I won’t buy again…. I was ready to give up the regular Play box all together when I received the June box yesterday… I actually liked and am using a couple of products in it… Products I likely would not have tried otherwise… so I will hang in a little longer.

    • Isabella Muse

If you never tried La Mer it might be worth heading in for the twenty bucks as you get a few other nicer goodies like the Tom Ford fragrance and Poison Girl! But the other stuff was meh for me! I cancelled Play a few months ago, I was trying hard to hang in there but I was disappointed each time and decided eh, I can go to the drugstore and get something I might use versus a box of samples I won’t! Glad to hear June was good!

  • Carol G

Yeah, I wasn’t impressed with the Play box either. I did it for 2 months and then cancelled because it was very underwhelming. This looks much like the same. I agree, this would have been a great points perk but I would not have paid $20 for this at all.

  • Lulle

This is so not worth $20…. 2 fragrance samples, the kind that sales associates throw at you desperately whenever you get into a store – no thanks! And the rest is very, very meh. A lot of these have been free samples with codes in the past. Nothing in there is new or exciting. Total fail if you ask me!
I’m still hanging on the regular Sephora Play! because every once in a while, they’ll surprise me and send a really cool selection. And I can stomach throwing $10 out the window if I don’t like it, it’s still fun to wait and discover new things. But no way I would pay double, you can get a nice full size makeup product for 20 bucks!

    • Isabella Muse

haha I agree about sometimes they throw something cool in the box! I cancelled my subscription but they did surprise me once or twice when I was a member!

  • Ashley

The Sephora play box proved to be a waste of ten bucks, imo. For two months I got samples of stuff that I would never ask for samples of had I just walked in the store, and then I realized that $20 could have gone towards a product I really wanted. Sample boxes are only cool when you are allowed to choose which samples you want each month, and these should include samples of cult favorites, not samples of products that don’t sell well. And samples should always be free, that’s why they are called samples. When you spend as much money as it takes to make and maintain VIB Rouge status, Play or Play Luxe should be an automatic perk. And in that regard, Sephora’s point system is just so wack, there is no real benefit at all. I found out I still have to pay for flash shipping, in addition to spending $1000 a year to keep my “status”. Status of what? I have over 11000 points racked up over several years of holding out for something good to come out of it, and all it truly is is an accrual of how much I’ve spent. Sorry for the rant, but I completely agree, Sephora Play is not a game worth playing.

  • Elaine Greene

I agree. I’m also Rouge and my real interest in these boxes is to try something new. It feels like they just include whatever they can get for free. I found this one very disappointing. Perhaps they should consider a discovery subscription for “Sephora scouts” items, niche brands or truly new releases.

    • Isabella Muse

oh Elaine good idea! I’d buy a scouts box! Those Sephora Favorites Scouts Sets are pretty cool!

  • TwirlyGirly

Oh HELL no, even if I WAS still VIB Rouge!

1). I am ridiculously picky about fragrances. I like less than .01% I try. I can spritz any fragrance I like – free – at Sephora or any other place that sells ’em.
2). La Mer? Um, no. Lots of ingredients that in reality do nothing for the skin:

“Crème de la Mer contains mostly seaweed extract, mineral oil, Vaseline, glycerin, wax-like thickening agents, lime extract, plant oils, plant seeds, minerals, vitamins, more thickeners, and preservatives. This rather standard moisturizer also contains some good antioxidants, but the jar packaging won’t keep them stable during use. This also contains a skin-stressing amount of eucalyptus oil, as well as Kathon CG, a preservative that is recommended for use only in rinse-off products. Consumers who have a ‘steadfast devotion’ to this product are not only wasting their money but also hurting their skin.” (https://www.beautypedia.com/skin-care-reviews/by-brand/la-mer/_/Creme-De-La-Mer)

3). Mascara? I wear individual lashes on the top so I only put mascara on my bottom lashes; I have enough deluxe samples of different brands from Sephora to last me YEARS.
4). That lipstick color isn’t gonna work.
5). Ditto the foundation; if I want to try it, I can get a sample of the correct shade for my skin tone (if they make one) FREE from Sephora.

I didn’t miss anything by not being offered this box.

  • genevieve

I don’t think it’s worth it either. I often find with those kinds of things that the brands include products they want to get rid of – that lipstick is totally off piste. Poison, as a perfume has been around for ages and ages.
Serious beauty lovers who haunt Sephora would not be too impressed with this offering.

  • Yen

I feel like the only thing I would be using is the Tom Ford rollerball since I love Black Orchid. I wouldn’t mind trying Poison Girl either. Everything else is kind of meh.

  • Isa

They don’t offer the boxes here, but even if they did, I don’t think I would sign up for the service. Or any other beauty sub boxes either, although I like watching unboxings of these. Too many of the things included I just have no interest in. There are some categories of products I simple don’t use that seem to be included with a lot of such boxes. Like, CC/BB creams, dry shampoo, lip gloss, etc. Also, a lot of these boxes seem to include black eyeliner! Which I already get plenty of samples of from various other places. I would rather just put the money towards something I actually want.
