Sephora Play Goes Iconic with a New $20 Box

I receive a small commission if you shop through my link.

Play by Sephora the Iconic Edition is a new $20 box that includes a luxury line up of deluxe samples of makeup and fragrance from some high-end brands like Tom Ford, Dior, Burberry, and more. Unlike the Play by Sephora Subscription Box that’s $10 a month the the Sephora Play Iconic Edition Box is a one time purchase.

Odd?

Agreed. I think maybe they might just be testing the waters with this box and see what sort of interest in garners before perhaps launching it as a monthly subscription addition to the $10 Play Box. I personally got tired of Play because a lot of the samples were items I had already tried and nothing new or unique enough to warrant keeping the subscription. I’m unsure of the Iconic Edition will grab my attnetion either but it might be worth exploring since it is only a one time purchase. But I can’t help but think I could use the $20 towards something else versus some deluxe samples I’d likely get at a high-end counter anyway.

I’m torn.

Do I or don’t I buy it?

If you’re curious it includes makeup from Guerlain, YSL, and Burberry plus La Mer Skincare and Tom Ford and Dior Fragrances as well as an exclusive Iconic Guide and Collectible Gold Bag.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Almost had me…but 2 fragrances…pass! And also a YSL makeup product? With my luck it will be a bright pink/red/orange lipstick that just wouldn’t suit me

    • Isabella Muse

almost got me two but I decided na don’t need it!

    • Jeanine

You know it’s going to be that bright pink lipstick they push on us.

  • Susan

No at $10 and no at $20. Samples are just that to me — samples that companies should give away to get you interested enough to buy full sizes. Imagine going to Costco and each food demonstrator charges you 50 cents for a little cube of cheese or a spoonful of granola.

Ehhh I’m not going to spend $20 on a box with luxury samples. My $10 a month Play box satisfies my desire to play with samples just fine!

And besides, as much as I love my Play subscription I’m thinking I could stop it anyway, it saves me $10 and I’m pretty happy with my makeup and skin care as it is. The box – be it Iconic or otherwise – isn’t going to sway me to buy new products when I love the ones I currently own.

    But it’s a cool idea!

Hmmm I can reluctantly spend $10 on a curated selection of samples, although I think it’s not worth the money (let’s say that the discovery aspect is, the amount of product is not). But $20? I don’t think so. I wish Sephora would just improve their Play box instead of launching a premium version.

  • Lei

I bought it, mostly for the La Mer sample. I just cancelled my regular Play subscription though, maybe a Rouge only box would sway me to sign back up.

  • Lacy

I would check it out just to see if it’d be worth it should future opportunities arise to subscribe or purchase be offered but its only for rouge members. I haven’t regained my rogue status this year so that’s disappointing.

I hate to admit but i caved.im curious what these samples be of.but if it is lipsticks and mascara im gonna be upset.its too bad sephora doesnt treat theyre vibs better.i spend an outragous amount of money with them .the perks of a vib is just not good enough.that box should of been sent free to vibs.i had made a order from ulta and im nt even a platinum and just for spending 60dol.s i got a bag of 24 deluxe size samples.i was very impressed.because sephora im so used to 1 ot 2 deluxe samples per order.its kind of a joke.spending over 1000 a year u should get alot more.

    • Isabella Muse

I did too! I was just too curious to see what it is they are giving us for twenty bucks!

  • GayleGalor

It says it’s only for VIB Rouge members and is already sold out, so it’s a moot point for me to consider it now. The reviews are insanely low and filled with VIB Rougers who haven’t even received it yet, but are griping” about the concept of it. Don’t even get me started on Sephora’s awful customer service or their “2 day flash shipping,” but I really hate it when people leave reviews for something they haven’t even received. At least wait until you get it. Ugh!

  • Lisa

Holy cow! Go read the negative reviews that don’t even have anything to do with the actual products. It’s a VIB exclusive & many are offended!

    • Isabella Muse

They also deleted a bunch of comments which caused further controversy!

  • Josette

My issue with this is the “deluxe samples” they offer with the play boxes are all the ones you get from promo codes and if you’re a rouge then you order a lot so you have them all anyway. Why am I paying sephora for deluxe samples that should be free and I likely have. I don’t need a gold makeup bag for $20.

  • Sarah Hill

I would be interested, but I didn’t realize it was Rouge only feature. Too bad!

  • Randi MacDonald

I tried to purchase, I got ” You must be VIB Rouge” to purchase. Sadly, I’m not.

  • Jeanine

I went to buy this but read the reviews first. If you want a good laugh go read the comments. People are salty! I do wish sephora would step their game up some because its becoming harder and harder to not shop at ulta.

    • Isabella Muse

I had no idea it was rouge prior to posting! I was reading through and laughed a little haha!

  • Catwater

Never buy lux brand, and i’m afraid samples wouldn’t persuade me to either. meh.

  • genevieve

I would be torn too – but I would need to see a list of the samples first before I purchased. As Natalie said above, I’d want to see if the lipsticks were shades I would actually use and absolutely no lip glosses. This is what puts me off so many GWP or value makeup products because they do contain generic items that I just wouldn’t use.
