QVC Buys HSN in $2.1 Billion Dollar Deal

I was pretty shocked but not surprised to hear QVC purchased HSN for $2.1 billion dollars. The two brands have a total of 23 million customers which makes for around 320 million packages that they ship annually.

By combining the two networks hope to grow a larger online audience as many cable cord cutters have turned away from TV and focus more of their attention online and both QVC and HSN hope to gain a larger online following.

Apparently the two networks will still operate separately but I’m unsure for how long. I personally hope they continue to remain separate entities after the merge because I think each has unique offerings, sales, and ways of doing things. I’m pro both networks and shop from each of them although, I’m probably a little more of an QVC shopper than I am an HSN one. But HSN isn’t a slacker with some of their deals and the brands they offer (Lord knows, I could live without access to Huggable Hangers).

In a letter to employees, QVC’s cheif executive Mike George, said:

“We will be able to operate more efficiently, by combining technology platforms where appropriate, leveraging our joint service and supply chain networks, eliminating redundant corporate and support services, and negotiating volume based discounts with our partners,” he wrote.

Of course, your ears probably perked up at discounts. I know mine did.

I hope the merger makes for exciting new changes from QVC and HSN. Together, I’m sure they’ll be stronger and able to offer us more new and exciting items.

What do you think of this merger?

I have yet to see a merger that benefitted the customer. If QVC were to adopt some of HSN’s strategies, (i.e. offer a bargain or free shipping or discount coupon once in a damn while!) then it would bode well… But I have a feeling HSN is going to become more QVC like rather than the other way around…. We shall see, I guess…. But I’m not optomistic….

Totally right on. Economies of scale, tech, clout with the brands they sell..overall more power and financial advantage. In this case, they almost become a monopoly, whereas they formerly were competitors. Usually has bloody well zero to do with the end consumer. And does not benefit him/her. You’d think….. no, you wouldn’t.

QVC just had a long-running free shipping promotion this weekend. If you haven’t watched in a while, you will note that there’s a lot more promotions.

I haven’t purchased anything from HSN for well over 3 years. I think the last things I got were jewelry as I used to be a huge Jay King fan. But since I work remote from home I just don’t wear a lot of jewelry and in fact I sold most of my JK stuff. I haven’t purchased any beauty products from them in well over a decade. I was never much on their clothes. They do have a range of craft and coloring stuff but their prices are high – retail – and I can get them much cheaper elsewhere. I’m sure this is a bottom line move (reduction of duplicate infrastructure and increase in purchasing power for UPS etc), and I don’t anticipate much benefit to the consumer

TBH, they sometimes seem like the same company to me lol. But I know each has a very passionate consumer group. I like having 2 different options on the occasion that I do shop, each with its own perks and drawbacks of course. Less options is boring.

I hope this will be a positive for customers but I’m pessimistic right now. I was able to find more cosmetics offerings from QVC but HSN was always better about free shipping and coupons. I haven’t bought much from either lately (did order some Harry Slatkin from QVC when I first heard that he was coming back with candles and home fragrance)but I hope they will still be able to sell most of the brands in cosmetics that they have now. I would buy Benefit and Lancôme from HSN and Laura Geller, BE, Josie Maran and Mally from QVC. Curious to see if the merger will mean some brands drop off.

I do not buy often but HSN does have more free shipping on more items and coupons and discounted shipping where you buy more. QVC is very boring lately with the same old stuff and rarely has free shipping.

The previous comment is spot on. I like HSN for its frequently free shipping on beauty items, which I buy the most from TV shopping channels. The 10/20 and 20/40 coupons were the best. As of QVC, I have noticed the free shipping offered on TSVs, hopefully that means they are going to adapt HSN’s shipping methods sooner or later.

I only purchased from them when you mentioned a deal and I mainly purchased from HSN because of their sales and gift sets (usually an eyeliner and mascara with eye palettes) and coupons. The free shipping was also great. I hope they can take what was great about both companies (HSN has excellent customer service, QVC hasmore brands) and be successful without alienating current customers.

I hope it helps them both and it may make me order more from HSN, I do order more from QVC , but I like some things from HSN a well. I’m excited for them both. 😀

Oh boy, what can I say that hasn’t already been said? Usually with mergers, both customer bases do not benefit. QVC is NOTORIOUS for waiting 5 days to ship out anything! HSN is a lot faster. QVC offers Easy Pays HSN offers more free shipping.

A sale is TRULY A SALE at HSN, unlike at the QVC site their idea of a sale is maybe $5 off!

Zulily is a companion company of QVC and they sell remaining items with absolutely NO RETURNS ACCEPTED.

HSN has better beauty brands IMO and QVC gas a companion sister TV station called QVC2 on certain cable TV providers. They are separate from QVC and show reruns of their shows of the ‘Big Deal’ their name for the TSV, during that soecific day.

I have mixed feelings about their merger since both companies are owned by Liberty Holdings.

I don’t shop in either places… but the Spice Girls MV is the perfect song for this post!! Love that you chose it lol

You know, monopolies were illegal in the US before Reagan changed the law. Bell Telephone used to be a monopoly and was broken up into “Baby Bells.” Now we have almost no competition in so many areas: phone service, for example. I got sick of Verizon’s horrible service and called ATT to see what they had to offer and once they found out I was a Verizon customer they switched my call back to Verizon customer service while I was on hold! They had some sort of agreement!!

I have shopped the Q and HSN for 25 years and think this is extremely bad news. HSN is more flashy and whimsical while the Q is classic and reliable. I like Trish McEvoy on HSN and IT, Laura Geller on the Q. Not only will a lot of people lose their jobs but I believe we, as customers, will lose out on quality and the creativity that comes from two competitors.

  • Penny

Wow! I had not heard this news! I am definitely a loyal Q shopper…the only time I ever shopped on HSN is when the “Jabot Cosmetics” line from the Young and the Restless became a real makeup line and they sold products on HSN! 🙂 I will stand by the Q and just maybe reap some rewards.
