How To Shop the Sephora Sale with Tips, Tricks, and Hacks

shop-the

So, I thought I’d do my traditional Sephora Sale Hack post that gives you tips, tricks, and ways to use the sale to your advantage! As you likely already know it’s that special time of the year when Sephora VIB Members get 20% Off. That means 20% Off everything and anything! Throw up your hands and run in circles! It’s an exciting time of the year because although many brands have great discounts available from now until the Holidays there are some brands that never, ever go on sale like Dior, Chanel, etc…! I mean, come on, have you ever seen Dior or Chanel saying, “Hey, 20% Off ya’ll!” No, doesn’t happen! This is why makeup lovers love when Sephora offers up 20% off. For many years, it was just the Sephora Friends and Family Sale and it had a generic code that most people “knew” on the down low. Typically the code was FF2012, FF2013, and it changed to reflect the year and even if you didn’t work at Sephora or knew someone that worked there you could still use the promo code!

But Sephora got smart….

About three or four years ago they stopped using the generic promo codes and started producing unique ones that were available to Sephora employees and those they gifted them too. Out of this the Sephora VIB Shopping Event evolved and Sephora started having a tier based sale that was available for Rouge, VIB, and BI members. The program evolved even further because at this point BI Members aren’t even included in the sale! This actually worked out in our favor because those who don’t want to shop online, don’t have too as now you can get the discount in stores or online!

Nonetheless, the sale starts tomorrow and here are some hacks to get the best bang for your buck!

Check it!

Get Money Back for Shopping!
Yes, that’s right! Get money back for shopping! If you haven’t sign up for ebates.com and you’ll get 4% to 8% back on purchases made at Sephora (or MANY, many other shops).

Shop the Sale During the Sale
My oldest and most beloved hack is to shop the sale during the sale! Sephora has a massive sale section with already reduces prices from 20-75% off which you can in fact use your code on. That means if something is 50% off and already on clearance you can get an additional 20% off that product! So, don’t forget to visit the Sephora.com sale section to grab some mega steals. Also, Weekly Wows are now in effect and those are also eligible for an extra 20% off.

When does it happen? What times does it start?
The Sephora 20% VIB Rouge Sale Event starts on November 3rd through November 6th that means you get 20% off your total during that time. After it ends? You don’t get 20% off! However, this year Rouge Members can shop a second time starting November 10th through the 15th using promo code 20FORROUGE. I don’t know the exact time that the code will go live but it is a safe bet that it’ll be live at 3AM EST as Sephora is on the West Coast. Set your alarm for 3:15ish if you’re on the East Coast and you can check to see if it is working.

I guess there were complaints last year that the time frame was too short because they have an extra few days to take 20% Off which starts November 10th and ends the 15th for Rouge Members.

For those that are VIB you’ll use promo code 20FORVIB starting on November 10th and ending on November 15th and BIs are also included this year (last year they were not for the first time) and get 15% on those dates as well.

Is it in store? Online? At JCPenny stores?
It’s online at Sephora.com and also in stores as well as in Sephora stores at JCPenny. Typically you’ll get a card in the mail which can be presented in store to get 20% off. It should have already arrived via snail mail but if it hasn’t you can go in store, confirm your VIB Rouge status, and they will likely give you the 20% in store without an issue. If they don’t? Call the VIB Rouge Hotline while you’re in store and tell them what’s going on and I’m sure they’ll help! Keep in mind shopping online is the best bet because there are so many brands that stores don’t carry!

Don’t Shop All Brands
Don’t get drawn in by 20% Off! It sounds awesome but in reality you can get much, much better deals through the Holiday season and on Black Friday and Cyber Monday from brands directly. Like Philosophy has up to 40% off during the Holidays, Dr Gross also has some great sales up to 30% off during the Holidays, as does brands like Stila, Tarte, etc…When you’re shopping remember to ask yourself, “Is this brand going to have a better sale later this season?”

Get Your Cart Ready Right Now and Shop Early
Wait, did I just suggest waking up early? Do it! You won’t regret shopping early. Even 6AM is a good time to get in your haul! Why? Because things sell out fast and also because the site gets SLAMMED with traffic. Although, you might want to wait because unlike last year there are two dates for Rouge Members to shop so if you don’t get what you want the first time around no problem, the second time it’ll probably restock!

My item sold out now what?
Check back! I see a lot of things go out of stock only to be restocked within a day or sometimes the last day of the sale! So, bookmark it and visit later! And as I said Rouge Members have two separate weeks to shop this year so it’ll restock for sure by the time you get around to shopping the second sale!

Can I use the promo code more than once? Do they limit what I buy? Are their exclusions?
I’ve always been able to use the promo code more than once. Last year, I used it four times I think! I don’t THINK this has changed so, I’m going to say you’ll likely be able to use the code again and again over the course of the sale. They have never had a limit on items that I know of. So, if you want to stock pile five of your favorite Chanel blushes I don’t think they’ll stop you from doing just that. There are no exclusions, everything qualifies for 20% off.

Is there a free makeup bag? A holiday tote?
Yes, on the first day of the sale you can bring a friend in to save 20% with you and you’ll also get a Holiday tote.

What will sell out? When will it sell out? Should I get it before it sells out?
If you think it’s going to sell out, likely it will so don’t hesitate! Get it! If you have buyer’s remorse later you can always return it but if it sells out you’ll be sobbing over your keyboard about the miss. Everyone always asks me what will sell out, how fast will it sell out, etc…etc..I haven’t a clue. Some items that I think are SUPER hot end up sticking around well into the New Year where as items I didn’t even think would disappear do quickly, never to return. Unfortunately, Sephora doesn’t keep me informed about stock, restocks, etc..so, I haven’t a clue what will be restocked. I’m not even into taking guesstimates about what will sell out because lately it’s all super random!

But, I’m not VIB Rouge now what?
You can’t get 20% Off unless you’re VIB Rouge. Putting the coupon in the promotional box isn’t going to work unless you have qualified for Rouge Status. VIB Members will have their chance to save at a later date as referenced above! Also, unlike last year the sale will also include BI Members who get 15% Off. For some reason, last year that was off the table for BIs but this year Sephora brought it back!

I hope these ticks and trips help you during the sale!

Remember, the sale starts tomorrow for Sephora Rouge Members at Sephora.com.

Good Luck and Happy Shopping!

Psyched! I took your advice from a few days ago and added stuff to my cart — not everything but the things I want most. Great advice about waiting for the brand itself to have holiday sales.

    • Isabella Muse

Yeah, I think everyone gets hyper on 20% off at Sephora that they sometimes forget that many brands have some mega sales during Black Friday and really all throughout the season! Like Philosophy is fab but 20% off isn’t a bargain as they do their own sales that are up to 30-40% off which is such a mega deal. DEF add it to your cart and have it ready haha!

  • Christina D.

There are a few things I’ve been waiting to purchase with the 20% off, so I’ve added them to the bag. Today, I removed the things that can wait since they’re not pricey to begin with (like some of the new Sephora palettes, especially the blushes), and focused on the items that the 20% off will really make a difference (as I rub my hands in eager anticipation, Viseart)!

    • Isabella Muse

Likewise! Mine mostly consists of fragrances that I know won’t go on sale! And some higher end skincare! I’ve surprised myself this year as I don’t have a lot of color options in my cart!

    • kjh

Hey, if you miss it, maybe you can wait for the Musebeauty.pro sale. Think it’s a bigger discount, plus brushes. But they don’t put the smaller palettes in their sale. I’m sure you can figure out the general time of year (not as ‘competitive ‘ time as now) by intragoogling it on Temptalia. The sale is a twofer, and i’ve scored 4. Think i’m done.

  • Dena mcclure

For those that do ebates be sure to activate the percentage back which will give you money back from your purchase.

  • Len

Muse my only comment is that you cant use (well I haven’t been able to) Two codes during this sale online. You are usually only able to use the discount code and apply that only. The “gift card promo” that comes in December (20off50) is like a gift card so when that sales happens you can use a code and the discount since they have a slot for gift card and code slot. The sample bag atm is a bust for sure either way but just throwing that out there.

    • Isabella Muse

Yup, realize that but sometimes they have a freebie with fragrance purchases so I added the link in to check any promotions just in case. sorry about that didn’t mean to imply two codes can be used at once!

      • Len

No need to apologize! I just know when I was new into Sephora that code thing did bum me out! LOL.

    • kjh

Yeah, you can never get mufe trios, which bums me out. CP is noted not to be included.

  • Jen R

Good tips and tricks! I’ve had my cart loaded since the weekend, but am going to go back through it one more time tonight, then pull the trigger when my alarm goes off at 5:30 am tomorrow before I hop in the shower.

I actually ended up dropping a few things from my cart today and buying them at Ulta instead – I have a 5X multiplier for the anniversary of joining their rewards program, PLUS a 5X multiplier for Smashbox, which made it a better deal to earn those $ there to use later.

    I love the holidays!

    • Isabella Muse

that’s my plan! I’m up at 4:30am almost everyday to start work on the blog before heading to work. So, I thought I’d hit submit as soon as I roll out of bed! SMART! Sometimes I think people get drawn into the sale and forget that there are better deals and options around! So, I always suggest to look over the cart and ask yourself, “Do I really need this or will it offered as a better deal somewhere else?” 🙂

  • Varya

Helpful post. You’re right,it is important to remember this isn’t the only sale ever.
I am still diddling around with my cart & just added the Amore Pacific Future Response Icons set. Could delete it before the end of the day. The only thing I know I’m buying is May Coop & a Nars eyeshadow that I’ve actually used up. This is only the second or third time I’ve ever done that. (and I’ve been wearing makeup for decades)

    • Isabella Muse

I think we all forget that in the frenzy! 🙂 haha I feel so accomplished when I hit pan anything!

    • Linda

I thought Sephora no longer carried May Coop. I went searching the other day and not there at all??

  • Krampus

Just want to kindly point out that “nonetheless” is one word, I used to be an English Comp professor, no offense.

  • Annie

I have enough things in my shopping cart to qualify for ROUGE, but I cannot use the code yet 🙁 Do you know what I can do about this?

    • Isabella Muse

It doesn’t work that way. You have to have had been rouge before. If you aren’t Rouge now, filling your cart with items isn’t going to qualify you for the discount. Sorry!

  • casey23

muse i am sooo new to this so i gotta ask.. when you say there will be better sales in the following days (or months?) what is it? and you mentioned some brands will go in a better sale like too faced, tarte… are these sales include only their holiday item or whole range? I know such a detailed question but my shopping list is usually made up of tarte, too faced, ahs and stila 🙂 so before vib sale can i have a hint please? 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are on the way and many brands will have sales, Casey I don’t know what those sales are unfortunately and they don’t share them until a few days before the big day(s). I imagine they’ll be some discount from Tarte and Too Faced also Too Faced apparently has two palettes coming out for those days. ABS doesn’t normally go on sale (not that I have seen anyway) so that might be one to go for! Too Faced recently had 25 and 20% off and Tarte was offering a tier discount last week. So the sales are going to come and go this month a lot. I always post about them as I hear about them so sign up for my newsletter or follow me on twitter/facebook for the latest info 🙂

      • casey23

I am always following your posts but I live in Turkey so time difference affects me but I will try to find a better way to follow your posts in a timely manner! btw you said ABS hahahha I ruined for you too sorry 🙂

        • Isabella Muse

aw sorry Casey! It’s after 5 over there 🙂 Lucky, wish my day was over so my weekend can start. LOL…oh gosh I’m sorry ABH duhhhhhhhhh! :-/ By the way, if you want a little idea of sales going on check my steals and deals archive, you can see some of the past sales that have been going on and it’ll give you a general idea of ones that will likely happen this year!

      • amy

ABH does have occasional sales, but sometimes those just include “bundles” or “BOGOs”. I have seen a few % OFF sales over the years, though.

        • Isabella Muse

I didn’t specifically point out ABH as I rarely see them do sales but brands like Philosophy, Stila, Tarte, etc have pretty good holiday sales with discounts higher than 20% so it is sometimes worth waiting ;-D

  • Cathy

Do you know what is the percent off VIB gets on this kind of sale?? I’m a rouge status right now until the end of the year but I don’t think I will be spending enough this year to still get the 1,000 points.

  • Liz

Another cash back tip I just discovered: If you have a Bank of America Visa Cash Rewards credit card, check the “deals” section in your online BofA account. You can activate the Sephora deal for 10% cash back reward ($10 max cash back as a statement credit) and then make sure you use that credit card when you shop at Sephora online or in-store. If you shop online, you can still use ebates, so you’ll get 4% ebates cashback + 10% Visa statement credit cashback + 20% off VIB/Rouge discount! I think the 10% Visa rewards is a one-time deal so make sure you use it on your largest order first if you are planning to place multiple orders.

    • Isabella Muse

omg thanks! I wish I had paid with my rewards card sadness! thanks Liz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Liz

This one is my hubby’s card…what a convenient excuse to use it!I usually forget to go into his account and activate the bonus rewards but I got lucky this time. I’m saving it for my big order later today or tomorrow (still deciding which Sunday Riley and/or Caudalie sets I want). This morning I used a gift card I’d been saving and got Bumble & Bumble Don’t Blow It (one of my hair favorites) and Farmacy Sleep Tight (trying it for the first time).

Thanks for keeping us updated on all the news, deals and recommendations for the sale!

        • Isabella Muse

LOL Liz! Surprise honey I did a sephora haul! 😀 Sleep Tight is nice! It’s a heavier balm consistency that’s gel-like! I really like it 😀 My pleasure xoxoxoxoxoxox!

  • Lori P

I also second the Ebates tip. I just changed my recent “check” from them into a Sephora Gift Card and Voila..an extra $40 bucks to get something and right now Ebates is at their normal 4% on the website. I’m a Rouge and I just went nuts for some holiday lip products.

  • Linda

I’m a VIB Rouge customer and I too thought the sale was on until Monday, I added some extras to my cart Sunday night and bought at 9 mins past midnight and the code was no longer useable. Gutted

    • Isabella Muse

Odd, I used it late last night to purchase some nest perfumes and it worked just fine.

  • Christina

Weird, my Rouge first access sale starts November 3-6, and then I get another chance during Nov 10-15, which coincides with the regular VIB sale. Are people getting different dates? I have my cards in front of me, so I’m pretty sure I have to chances to shop–I think because Rouge’s complained last year that their window of opportunity was too small.

      • Christina

Phew! I was going to say I need to buy all like right now. No time to deliberate whether I need something or not. Haha!

        • Isabella Muse

ha sorry! I revamped this from last year’s post and didn’t edit right duh!

  • Jars

    Hello.
Another little hack that you can do especially if you have a few things you are going to pick up and are doing online shopping AND can use your discount code more than once is:
For IB/VIB members: Make multiple orders to $50 (or as close to a little bit over $50) to get the free shipping and get multiple samples with every order instead of one big order with just three samples! Right?
And for Vib rouge; I believe you always get free shipping, so why not just do all separate orders for more free samples? 🙂
    What are your thoughts?

    • Isabella Muse

Oh very good idea Jars 😀 Double samples is always good! great hack!

      • Jars

        Ps, I LOVE your blog.
I think I check it every day 🙂 I am just not that big in the comments section. But yes glad you agree with my hack 🙂

        • Isabella Muse

Aw thank you dear 😀 thanks for reading xoxoxoxoxox! Def a cool hack ;-D

    • amy

The only problem with that is, how often does one actually get their chosen samples, LOL! I considered myself extremely lucky when I got 2/3 on my last order.

      • Christina

I was just going to write this! LOL! I never get what I request anymore.

  • Magenta Wilde

Good tips. You can also sign up for email alerts when an item is restocked.

  • Neetzy.

Here in Canada the sale is running November 10-15th. I’m a VIB level member, so I’m not sure if my sale access is different than if you are at Rouge level. Thanks for the tips — I will be sure to use my Ebates when I buy. Now I’ve gotta decide what I want!

    • Isabella Muse

thanks for the info on the Canada sale! My pleasure! Let us know what you get!

  • kjh

Since rouge has no shipping threshold, you can do multiple orders, as long as you don’t have issues with overmuch packing, wate, landfill issues. Ordered <50 once and felt mega guilty. It’s not timed so that anyone is likely to get another paycheck, but it can be handy for things omitted, or waitlisted. You mentioned Dennis Gross, as a brand that could go cheaper on their dedicated website. I put the retinol/ferulic set in the cart, and was wondering if that might go down on their own website? Also, remember that a Nars has an f&f, in early Dec, 20%, previously. They had all the S stuff, and their online exclusives. Not the Brit eye palette, unfortunately. When I had to rewrite a 14 page report because I used the word finicky…fussy was accceptable for other people…the computer storage is also implicated, I got so passive aggressive about day job that I spent my last hour working on the S cart. Take that, dingbats!

  • MakeupAddict549

Are the Holiday tote bags only for VIB Rouge or are they for VIBS too?

  • Lyla C

I really wanted that Benefit eyebrow kit with the full sized products but they pulled it from both Sephora and Ulta because Benefit did a voluntary recall on the one thing in it. Bummer! It was a great deal. They said something about it may irritate your eyes if you get it in them. Um yeah. Took it right outta my cart.

  • Georgia

I always check Mr. Rebates AND eBates before shopping and pick the one with the highest % return on my buck. HTH

  • Jane

Do you know if sephora will still do the $15 off $50 in early December? This is my first time getting the 15% off, so not sure if I’ll get both. Thanks!
