Stila Fairy Tale Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow ($24) is one of three new shades of this popular cream shimmer eyeshadow that launched for Spring 2018. Why yes, I do have a slightly bad case of pokemon disease when it comes to these eyeshadows. They have turned into a very fast favorite formula for me and I’m always quite excited when they launch new shades.

Although, I must admit Stila confuses me with all the name changing and introduction of new formulas and finishes. Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow started out life as Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow but somewhere along the line they dropped the Magnificent Metals part of the name. Fast forward to Holiday 2017 and they introduced Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow in the Stila Eye For Elegance Liquid Eye Shadow Set and now have an entirely separate range of shades in that formula.

Fast forward to last week and we have yet another round of shades. Ok, cool! Love that! However, the new shades are marketed as having a metallic finish and the old ones are now considered a glitter finish. WTF though? I’m thoroughly confused now thanks so much. Weren’t the originally marketed as metallics anyway!?!?

Anyway, sorry, I don’t mean to rant but this hit a little bit of a sore spot for me as I find the names, formulas, and finishes can be a little confusing. I think we can all agree that their marketing on this line is a little daft.

None the less Fairy Tale Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow with a metallic finish ended up in my stash and here’s what went down.

Just to clarify, this doesn’t really have any much different of a finish than other shades I already own. I can’t say I noticed it being metallic. To me it was pure glitter and shimmer just like the original shades I have. I mean yes sure there’s somewhat of a metallic look to these but for the most part it’s a lot of shimmer and glitter. So, why they felt the need to group shades into a glitter and metallic finish is confusing! But I suspect that it might be because as we get nearer to Spring 2018 releases they MIGHT just give us a matte finish in this formula. Perhaps that’s why they want to start grouping shades into different finishes. I sure as hell hope I’m right as I really like the idea of a matte formula like this.

Anyway, onto Fairy Tale which isn’t metallic but all shimmer. This is described as a gunmetal gold with bright lavender pearl. To me it’s a bronze-y brown with lavender specks of glitter that flashes slightly purple in a certain light. It’s a very pretty color but not unique enough to get me terribly excited as I feel like it’s a darker version of the shade called Smoldering Satin.

As with all the Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadows this is a mix of glitter and pearl particles encased in a lightweight gel that blends very easily onto lids without fall out during or after application. These typically wear very long and strong on my drier eyes without creasing, fading, or leaving chunks of glitter on my upper cheeks during the wear. I tend to wear them on my bare lids but they look just as great over a powder eyeshadow. They aren’t for the glitter haters out there as they are a super glittery shadow but for those that love shimmer, you’ll adore these no doubt.

Stila Fairy Tale Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow is super unique but I don’t regret purchasing it as it looks gorgeous alone or over my favorite deeper, bark brown eyeshadows.

Muse, do you have a list of all the shades? I didn’t know if any had been discontinued. I got a gift card for Christmas and I’m thinking of Pokemoning these.

Thank you for this great review! I’m always looking for a good liquid eyeshadow and LOVE sparkles and shimmer!!

What do you find to be the best way to apply these? If I use just the applicator it’s too much and it gets a little messy with fingers. It looks like you have nailed these! 😀

    • Isabella Muse

I actually use the applicator and fingers. I smooth on a little with the applicator, pat with my finger, and build as needed ;D

my pleasure <3! You can do it! I used to suck at cream eyeshadows and hated them but a little practice and suddenly I love them!

I think these look fab on you. Not OTT or Tried Too Hard or I’m Young Again, see? They are quite refined and pretty. And they don’t have that ‘better not wear anything else shimmery, bec i’ll get competitive shimmer overload’ effect. What else is nice is the suitability for one and done. Easy, peasy, but dressy. These are a super formula for you…very flattering. Go ahead, Pokémon ’em with backups against FODCS (fear of d/c status.)

I agree with you that name changes of the same product are very confusing; however this is a beautiful shade and it suits you so well.

Reminds me a little bit of Colourpop’s So Quiche. If I remember correctly, it’s also a bronze tone with purple flashes from the glitter.

It’s a good colour, but I probably won’t pick this up. I’m interested in seeing what the Glimmer & Glow shades look like, since it’s supposed to be pearly looking.

I was so excited to order this color but only because it was supposed to be a duo chrome shade. I have smoldering satin & don’t want to order this shade if it’s similiar. Do you see a duochrome affect or should I get an other shade instead?

    • Isabella Muse

It’s a LITTLE tiny bit deeper than smoldering satin but the colors are a lot alike and they are no color shift in my opinion. You might want to get another shade if you already own smoldering satin!
