Tarte Foil Finger Paints Shadow Palette ($39) is a new Spring 2018 palette featuring soft, creamy selection of metallic eyeshadows. It’s probably a little too early to say this since brands are just starting to push their Spring 2018 Collections but this is turning into one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes of the season.

Tarte did an outstanding job with this formula and I have hopes they are testing the market with this palette and have plans to either do a larger palette with the formula or a selection of individual eyeshadows shades. As you know I’m not terribly into metallic or foiled eyeshadows because they tend to be frost on these but Tarte somehow created a formula that compliments eyes beautifully well and adds a gorgeous pop of shimmer and color to lids that looks dramatic, bold, and fancy.

Tarte Foil Finger Paints Shadow Palette comes in a gorgeous gold compact with a face plate that contains a shimmering sandy 3D design with small aqua pebbles. It looks like something you’d find at the bottom of an enchanted sea bed where mermaids make their home. It’s really a gorgeous palette and beautifully presented. Inside is a generously-sized mirror and the five eyeshadow shades.

The palette contains three creamy, foiled shades which have a thick, creamy texture and are meant to be applied with fingers. That’s actually part of the joy of the palette that will either disgust you or make you sing in joy how easy application is. I was actually pretty hyped that I could do an incredible eye look in a few seconds using only my fingers. But I totally get that a lot of people will be concerned about germs, bacteria, and just the general grossness of using fingers to pick up color overtime. You can, of course, use a flat brush to pick the color up and apply it to your lids but I felt I had more control using my fingers to blend since the texture is quite thick and you want to sheer it out as you blend since it’s also very pigmented. My trick? Don’t dip your fingers into the well! Instead pick up color with a brush and just transfer that color to your finger for application. You can always clean your brush later plus this prevents bacteria from building up overtime if you’re using your fingers on the shades.

I didn’t use any primer when I was testing this palette and had absolutely no issues with creasing or fading. The color starts out quite creamy but it locked nicely onto my drier lids and still gave me plenty of time to blend and play before setting.

Gold Coast, Sailor’s Delight, and Sea Glass are the three master shades as I call them. These are the colors with the most pigment and the creamiest texture. Stargazer is a split pan of top coats with a far different formula that works best applied over any of the three foiled shades. These reminded me of a thicker version of the shades found in the Wet n Wild Color Icon Glitter Palettes that are typically released around Fall/Halloween. At first I was a little worried they’d be a big glitter mess and in someways they are but a little tiny bit applied over any of the other shades really adds beautiful pop and drama to your completed eye look. I used the clear crystal shade over Sea Glass in my look below and it created this golden sheen over the color that had a duochrome effect. Since this particular shade had a grittier, thicker consistency compared to the other three shades I was concerned about glittery fall out but I had absolutely none.

I had an absolute blast using this palette over the last few days. I created a variety of gorgeous looks that really looked amazing. I was slightly disappointed that not all the shades technically work together but you can honestly still create a variety of looks none the less. I actually have hopes Tarte will do another palette with more shades as I’d totally buy more.

All in all, Tarte Foil Finger Paints Shadow Palette was a super prelude to Spring 2018. If you have upcoming Holiday parties to attend or evenings out this is the palette that will create gorgeous, sultry sparkly looks for those events in seconds! You don’t need to be an expert, anyone can create a gorgeous look in seconds!

Loves it!

Must Approved.

Do the metallic shades in this palette have a different formula or feel than Tarte’s existing collection of single metallic eyeshadows?

  • Janessa

And here’s where the packaging junking in me goes “ohhhhhhhhhhh” 😛
I am loving the way you used the palette. Gorg!

    • Isabella Muse

I LOVED the packaging! They did such a nice job with it ;-D Aw thanks <3!

  • Maria

These are pretty on you Muse. I think this is pricey for the amount of shades. Wait for a sale. What is the total net weight of each shade? Thanks.

  • Carol

I was excited about this until I saw the price! $39. is pretty steep for what you are getting. I agree, the colors are gorgeous and the formula sounds nice but in my opinion, $25 would have been a better price for this since you are really only getting 3 shades. The other 2 are “toppers”. I guess I’m just getting to the point where I want the most bang for my buck. I agree, hopefully they will do a larger palette with this formula!

    • Deanna

I agree. Tarte has been hitting it out of the ballpark with its gorgeous packaging the last few months, and this is the best of all, IMO. But, especially after just watching again a YouTube video with first impression finger and brush swatches, I think it’s just a little too much. … I wouldn’t have said that a few months ago, though, lol… I think I’ve just bought so much makeup that by now, like you, I want the most bang for my buck.

Muse’s description of the ease of applying with fingers did perk my interest for a minute, though. I love being able to do that! 🙂 IMO, as a nurse, it is not unsanitary at all, as long as hands are properly cleaned before and after.

Ok, if this goes on sale, I’m jumping on it. LOL

      • Isabella Muse

honestly, agree about cleaning hands after and before use but if it icks anyone out picking it up with a brush and just brushing it on your fingers it just as easy ;-D

  • Andi

These are gorgeous and so is the compact. For me it’s an easy pass since I couldn’t wear them daily. It would be nice if they come out with the topper is a separate package to wear for special occasions.

    • kjh

Lol. Thank god the thought police don’t lurk here. Didn’t see it originally, and now can’t unsee them. Bet they go, with the first swipe.

Estée Lauder was famous for using her fingers. And if the deceased queen of cosmetics can, so can we! Agree about the brush to finger as being most sanitary. Wash hands b/a, use the brush to the fingers. S.t. do brush to another brush with CP SSS. Think finger isn’t all that easy. These look good for one and done.

I’m not a cream/liquid eye shadow person normally because I have hooded eyes and they crease even over primer (and they don’t store for as long a powder) but I think I’ll try these! Random side note: 15 years ago, Lancôme had these colored eye primers/cream shadows. I didn’t know how to apply shadow back then though so it was basically just smudged on my lash line/lid, no crease work, but I remembered them wearing well.

I do want to try the Stila ones soon. I just spent too much on my cruise vacation and holiday gifts though so I really need to pull back on my spending.

    • Isabella Muse

Let me know whatcha think! I think I remember the Lancome ones you’re talking about but can’t recall the name at the moment 😀 You have plenty of sales to look forward when the Holidays are over! 🙂 maybe grab this/or the stila ones at that point!

Gorgeous packaging, without being too cutesy or boring. And the shades are divine. They look really beautiful. It would have been nice if there was a green shade in addition to the raspberry one…just to make it a tad more versatile.
I think this is a much more targeted palette than a lot of their other ones, which are generally just recycled neutrals. So glad that the brand is upping their game and experimenting with a beautiful result.
Thank you for the review Muse.

  • Agona

Muse! Thanks so much for your recommendation on these. I picked them up for that reason and because they’re part of the RotS line, even though I never do cream (or liquid) shadows. After priming…1) I used brushes from pan to eye as an experiment. I used both synthetic and natural bristled, flat and not flat brushes, and both worked fine and blended fine. I was surprised! Very minimal fallout for me. 2) I wore these for about 7-8 hrs, running errands in and out of stores all day in balmy cold winter weather outside and very dry heating once inside w/o checking my makeup until I got home. Very minimal fading/creasing–maybe a smidgen more than powder shadows would be if I put it through a similarly stressful day.

So I’m pretty happy. I love how sparkly they are and can see them being my winter go-to. I am concerned though that I won’t use them enough before they go funky as they are the only cream shadows in my stash.

    Thanks, Muse!!

    • Isabella Muse

Fantastic I am so glad they worked out so great for you Agona 😀 That’s awesome! I am wondering the same as the pans are pretty huge so I’m a little worried they will harden up before I have a chance to use them! Let’s hope not! ;-D Glad you had a good experience!

      • Agona

Don’t laugh but one time in my 20s, I found a never-touched old lip gloss palette that I forgot I had. I sniffed it, it seemed fine, so I stuck a lip brush in it (btw, I’m not confirming or denying whether or not I would’ve stuck it on my lip afterward…don’t judge me!) and it *thunked*, like it was plastic. After a couple of tries, I tapped it with my fingernail and it literally had dried up hard pan and become little plastic squares. I thought that was interesting because I always assumed makeup, when going bad, would separate or smell or become some sort of gooey funkiness–it was an interesting experiment. 🙂

Sorry you feel that way Tia. I work very hard on the blog everyday and put a lot of time and effort into. Sorry it isn’t to your liking. As I said numerous times in the past I’m not a makeup artist, I’m just someone who enjoys makeup as a hobby. No one says you can’t run a beauty blog just because your make skills aren’t perfect. I have a great love and passion for makeup that I wanted to share with others and that’s what my site is about.
