My Highlighter Cost $1.60 and You Can See it From Space Sort Of By Not Really

E.L.F. Apricot Glow Baked Highlighter is on sale this week for $1.60 and should get you a cheap, budget-friendly glow that you might be able to see from space if reviews and youTube are anything to go by.

I dunno if that’s technically possible but if it is, “Hi up there! Take me to your leader!”

Everyone was raving this shade last Summer because well, golden apricot highlighter, Summer, glow, you know how it is! Combing all that in the heat of the Summer and you got Insta-viral sensationalism.

As for me, I can take this formula or I can leave it. It’s a baked texture that has a bit of a gritty feel and doesn’t pick up well with a brush. That’s the bad news.

The good news is it looks really, really, really pretty if you get it to apply correctly. I apply a few layers before I mist myself with setting mist to get de-powder the look and get the glow amped up. If you do it right you’ll end up with the most beautiful golden peachy glow.

But as they say you get what you pay for because this is far from finely milled and the texture doesn’t make this the most user friendly highlighter around but at this price, well, I can’t really complain too much! As you can see from my swatch it doesn’t quite show up but it does layer very well skin without clinging to drier areas however, as I said the mist does help to break it down and give it a better sheen on my face.

Get your glow on for under two bucks at www.elfcosmetics.com.

If any aliens make contact let me know!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. One of the multitude of reasons you are my favorite blogger: sarcasm. I heart sarcasm! (There is a Monty Python sketch that delves into the joys of sarcasm but I’m permanently warped by Python and I don’t dare try to explain for the uninitiated).

    Me personally? I loathe highlighters. I’ve tried…really, I have. I just don’t get it.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m glad someone gets it ;-D lol! but of course, you’re speaking to a Monty Python fan ;-D so, I totally get it. Mostly common used by me: “I fart in your general direction” or maybe I should say I “I fart in your general direction, highlighters!”

  • Christina D.

HA! I love it. Now you’ve got me started.

“Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries! Silly king and his k-nig-its”. (Insert razzberry here).

And, if you think you got a nasty taunting this time, you ain’t heard nothing yet, dappy English k-nnnnnnnniggets!

LOL LMAO! “but you’re arm is off!” “I’ve had worst!” lol! so stupid!

Ooh! Did you hear that? That’s what I’m on about.

    • Isabella Muse

I can do this all day! I am literally crying laughter here lol! My x boyfriend used to do the voices SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO well (he was British)! it was hysterical!

Me too. We’ve probably scared off some of your readers but I adore Python and don’t have anyone who appreciates it, nevermind volley great lines back-and-forth.

To get back on topic…did I mention I don’t like highlighters? Alrighty then.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL I love you! I swear we are related in another life ;-D Have you by chance tried the face palettes from Becca? Like Chrissy’s or Jaclyn’s? They really changed my mind about highlighters! But I’m with you most of them I HATE!

      • susan e tunis

just a comment, i have the Becca highlighter, omg.. it is the best…. not overdone if you know what i mean, everytime i use it i get compliments on how good my skin looks… and i am sixty five… i heard it was number one… rated….

        • Isabella Muse

It really is a great highlighter 😀 glad to hear you love it too!

  • Christina D.

I heart you too! No I haven’t tried any of those but I did discover Ofra Cosmetics a few months ago and I’ve purchased their eye shadow palettes and their full face palettes which have nice highlighters. I admit that I usually forget to use them but then I saw Wayne Goss apply them and I was impressed (but that’s probably more to do with WG than any highlighter).

    • Isabella Muse

they have a new palette on Ulta! likely it is WG ;-D haha! He makes everything look perfect!

  • Christina D.

Clairification: WG wasn’t using Ofra highlighters but I he made whatever highlighter he was using look fabulous, dahling (Absolutely Fabulous, anyone?).

  • ruth

I’ve heard if you scrape off the top layer, they’re magic underneath. dunno if it works, but can’t hurt to try

    • Isabella Muse

I’m going to try that first but re-pressed if that doesn’t work ;D

I bought the ELF baked highlighter in MoonLight Pearls and had a hard time getting it to apply or even swatch smoothly. I read somewhere on the internet that scratching off the top layer would help – so I did ,but it still wasn’t great. I then watched a YouTube Video that showed them crushing up the highlighter and re-pressing it with alcohol. I tried that method and IT APPLIES LIKE BUTTER !! It is one of the most beautifully soft and pigmented highlighters I own. If you’re willing to re-press it , it is definitely worth the price tag !

    • Isabella Muse

I’m going to try it! Can’t hurt considering I paid pennies for it!

I bet you two know the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow then!
