Etsy Musings: Bead Passion

Happy Friday lovies! Excited for the weekend? I know I am! Last week I introduced you to a brand new catagory that I’d be doing every week or two which would be called Etsy Musings. If you missed my original post I hope you’ll go back and have a peek at it.

As part of my brand new series today I’ll be introducing you to Helen who’s from the Philippines and runs a shop on Etsy entitled Bead Passion.

I’m very excited to introduce you to Helen and her amazing art so jump ahead for a review of her products, an interview with her, and a special steal and deal at her shop!

Helen makes jewelry. I know sounds kinda boring right? So what she makes jewelry what’s so special about that? Well Helen actually makes a special, unique kind of jewelry that should appeal to anyone who 1. loves cupcakes and 2. adores anything with a kawaii flair! Whether we are talking earrings, bracelets, or necklaces, Helen has you covered for a “sweet” jewelry experience. A majority of her items are themed with cupcakes in mind which makes for a unique and sweet jewelry experience. All her cupcake creations are made with polymer clay and are teeny tiny in size for a perfect little piece of conversation starter jewelry! I discovered Helen November of last year and have since been terribly addicted to browsing her shop for her latest creations. I think one of the main reasons that Bead Passion appeals is the ridiculously inexpensive price tag! Each piece is handmade, takes a hour or more to make, is amazingly unique, yet carries a price tag of $10-$20 USD at most! Helen’s unique creations are both cute and budget friendly! We all love that don’t we?

Helen was kind enough to allow me to interview her and ask a ton of silly questions about how in the world does one go about creating such a tiny cupcake!? Plus she included some amazing images of her creations for us to enjoy! Take a look at what Helen had to say below!

What made you start selling on Etsy?

I’ve heard about Etsy in 2006, when my cousin suggested I try selling my beaded jewelries there. Back then I had no idea how online selling was supposed to go there. Then I discovered making jewelries out of polymer clay last year. I have never been so passionate with any other crafts as much as I am now with polymer clay. That’s because these are really unique, one of a kind creations. You can never make 2 pieces exactly alike, that’s the beauty of handmade. So I finally got the courage and confidence to sell online as an international market. It helped also that my husband has been very supportive of my Etsy activities all along. He even made my banner.

I couldn’t agree more with Helen. Truly her pieces are all very unique and one of kind! Some of her cupcakes are too lifelike, must keep away otherwise I’ll take a bite!

Have you sold on any other sites prior to Etsy?

I used to advertise my products on a local buy and sell site, www.davaoexchange.com

I noticed many of your jewelry items are foody in nature like cupcakes and slices of cake? Why food?

Some people love books, dogs, or cats or gadgets. But I believe that the common denominator among them is food, who doesn’t like food? :-) Cupcakes, I think, is magical food. It’s the most charming dessert ever invented!

Helen’s excitement about cupcake was positively delightful and it really made me smile when I read her response. I couldn’t agree more truly cupcakes are magical food!

How long does it take you to make a single pendant?

On the average about an hour. But that is only for sculpting the piece. It doesn’t include conditioning the clay, baking, and then glossing.

How does one even make such a tiny cupcake? What ingredients are used? Do you need to bake them?

Based from my experience, you will need patience and a lot of love. You will not be able to achieve a quality piece when you are in a hurry or you’re just making it for the sake of selling.

These tiny cupcakes were handmade with polymer clay. Polymer clay is like the clay we used to play with when we were little but baked to harden. Before you start, you need to condition the clay to make it soft and pliable, either by kneading with hand or rolling in pasta machine. I use both depending on the amount of clay I am working with. Then you mold your desired shape by hand. There are many available tools to help with sculpting, molding and texturing. There are also liquid clays to help you achieve a more realistic frosting effect. Once done, the cupcake is baked for about 30mins at specific temperature depending on brand of clay used. Then it allowed to cool. Afterwards comes glossing. For my dessert clay, I do not gloss because they look more realistic with a natural matte finish. However, I would do so upon customer request. Polymer clay has a wide variety of colors, so painting is not necessary in my case.

Are there any shapes or forms you’ve attempted to make but weren’t successful?

I could hardly make face sculptures. I attempted to make several character clays, I can say they look fine but are cartoonish in nature. I made a cake topper for my son’s 2nd birthday and another for a friend, also some religious sculptures, Mama Mary and St.Anthony (you can see these at my flickr photos www.flickr.com/photos/accetera) I’m hoping to achieve realistic sculptures and am currently practicing. Who knows you might see some serious sculpting in my shop in the future.

Which are the hardest parts when making an item?

The hardest part is conceptualizing and making the initial design. Making something new is always a trial and error thing for me. That is why, I usually charge high for custom orders. Also I find it difficult and time consuming, to condition the clay. My hands and arms hurt :-) Also mixing clay colors to achieve the shade I needed is difficult.

I’ve seen jewelry like yours on Etsy and other sites before but it’s much more expensive! How do you keep your prices so low for a craft that obviously takes so much time?

I didn’t realize my prices are low :-) My price is based on degree of difficulty to make a piece. Those $5 and below are items I can make within less than an hour, those I’ve mastered doing. I think it also helps that I have a supply shop (www.beadhub.etsy.com) so I can get my supplies in bulk, making them cheaper. These are the chains or wire components that comes together with the clay accessory.

Is there anything else you can tell us about jewelry making?Anything else you want to add?

All handmade items are meant to be treasured. Part of the artist is in there. Like for my item, it is more than a piece of clay, its a piece of art. Please continue to support handmade. Etsy’s got a lot of great artists!

Helen was such a joy to interview as she’s obviously very excited about what she does and her passion for it shines through in her replies to my questions. Her little pieces of “art” are an absolute joy to behold and makes me want to collect ’em all!

Here are some photos that Helen included with her interview for me to post along with this Etsy Musing.

Here’s a photo of my cupcake pendant that I purchased a few months ago. When I purchased it came wrapped in a sweet pink box with a pair of fork and spoon earrings (hey, you need utensils to go along with that cupcake), a sweet note from Helen thanking me for the purchase, and a chain for my charm, all this for $10 USD bucks?! Loves it!

Helen extended a nice coupon for my readers. If you purchase something from her and message her after you’ve checked out telling her you read about her on my blog she’ll include a few surprises with any order that’s $10 USD and above. You’ll get a handmade dessert cellphone charm, stickers, and a pair of earrings! But be sure to tell her where you read about this so she knows to include your extra goodies with purchase plus the coupon is good until July 1st so if you’re not wanting to shop right away, make a wish list and buy it later on!

I hope you enjoyed my first Etsy Musings post and I sure hope you’ll visit and show your support to our fabulous artist Helen at beadpassion.etsy.com

If you do purchase please share your order with me! Curious to see what everyone buys!

Stay tuned next week for another awesome Etsy Musing!

Etsy Musings

The Muse happens to be a BIG Etsy junkie. It’s a huge addiction, like really, really big. The Muse’s mum is fond of the phrase “from soup to nuts”, in this case that would be a real fitting way of understanding my purchases on Etsy. I literally buy from soup to nuts on the site. Makeup, clothes, jewelry, perfume….you name it I’ve purchased it somehow or someway on Etsy. I’ve been shopping on Etsy since around 2006 or so. In the past three year’s Etsy has grown up to be such a big and wonderful place to score such amazing finds.

I wrote about Etsy once before on Musings, quite a long time ago when I first began my blog. At the time I had plans to bring a category to my site which would be an “Etsy finds” daily post sort of thing. Someway, somehow that wonderful idea got tossed to the back burner and never really got taken out of the closet until now.

Lately, I’ve been tossing around ideas on how to make my blog more interesting. I feel like I do the same thing day after day and I just want something to spice up my little home on the Internet. What came into play was the rebirth of my “Etsy Musings” idea from days of old.

Mostly I embraced my idea for this new category simply because we are all looking for an escape from the expensive and really would love some unique, inexpensive beauty finds. Secondly, I really wanted to give a little recognition to my favorite sellers on Etsy. Many of these people aren’t in it for a simple buck, this is their art, an expression of their personality. I felt like many of these artists (I refrain from using the word sellers) needed a voice, someone to shout out to the world about how wonderful they are and again the rebirth of Etsy Musings took place.

So for the sake of unique, inexpensive beauty finds made by wonderful artists….I bring to you Etsy Musings which will be a weekly or a monthly or an every other day post about a great Etsy find and the artist behind it.

I hope you’ll enjoy this interesting category. I hope it’ll lead you towards an interesting, unique, and inexpensive beauty find. I hope it’ll help you to embrace your inner artist. I hope it’ll simply put a smile on your face after finding a neat little treat that doesn’t cost you $25 bucks but simply a dollar or two.

I’ll begin Etsy Musings starting this week with a review and an interview from a kawaii jewelry maker that lives in the Philippines and literally brings a “sweet” touch to jewelry!

Stay tuned for the details but for now what are your thoughts on Etsy?

Shopping Discoves on Etsy

I think, by now, we have established I LOVE shopping! Now I’m not saying that I love it…I LOVE IT….get me?

Sometimes, a girl such as myself, can get a bit bored with items that stores have. I get a bit burned out seeing the same type of product offered over and over and over in a different format, color, or package.

I love being wow’ed by the next best thing but on a occasion sometimes the wow factor goes out of shopping!

In order to get my daily dose of wow I head over to Etsy to discover new, interesting, unique and generally awesome little goodies that are handmade by masses of different people!

Etsy reminds me of a little market places where tons of friendly people are peddling their wares! The only difference between Etsy and a real market place is this is my computer and I don’t actually get a chance to meet with the talented artists that pawn their goods on Etsy!

I admire and respect many of the artists on Etsy and adore giving them business! I think it takes a special kind of person to create so many interesting items! I call them artists because truly that’s what it boils down too! These people put heart and soul into all their creations! The best thing is you’ll shop, purchase, and end up owning something that’s truly a one of a kind item! What more could a girl want?

Some Etsy Shops that the Muse frequents and recommends:

Mad City Sue Soaps

Plenty of wonderful bits and bobs to keep you happy in the shower and out! Handmade soaps, body scrubs, customized mists and more! I strongly recommend the Italian Cream Cake Foaming Shower Parfait but please try to avoid digging into it with a spoon! After all it is for your body!

Whimsy Hollow
When the Muse wants to a little sparkle, shimmer, and glitter she looks no further than Whimsy Hollow where she can purchase Faerie Glimmer Dust! This gorgeous shimmer comes in a whimsical little jar with the cutest little powder puff. Use it on your eyes, shoulders, body, anywhere you’d love a little sparkle and a bit of honeysuckle fragrance makes it extra special! Whimsy Hollow offers other fine little bits and bobs for sale so check the shop out and see what catches your fancy!

Sobe Botanicals
The Muse loves lip glosses and balms! When she grows a bit tired of her normal stash she heads over to Sobe Botanicals to purchase some of their custom made lip glosses! Sobe allows you to choose the color and the flavor of your balm! It goes on smooth, gives your lips a tiny touch of color, tastes yum, and is cheap as a day old chips! Perfect for those days you don’t want to be too made up! Sobe has other wonderful little makeup minerals and such for sale as well!

Baba Studios

The Muse sometimes likes to step off the well used path onto a new one! When she does she visits Baba Studios to purchase some of their highly sought after bags! She uses them for a variety of storages purposes and sometimes even when she’s out and about! They always cause quite a stir among the vintage lovers in her life and are quite the conversation piece! For a few dollars you too can own a very interesting piece of art work to hang around your wrist or just to hold your tiny treasures in!

GraceEsjavacreations
The Muse absolutely adores spoiling her family and friends! She loves buying them pressies even when their isn’t a holiday or a birthday to celebrate! When she wants to add a special little something to a package for a friend or a family member she enjoys tagging it with one of the Victorian tags she can purchase from GraceEsjavacreations! It gives her gifts that special little touch!

BamaBelle Vintage Boutique
I can’t think of a single thing that the Muse’s likes more than vintage clothing! Oh yes wait I can think of something! Vintage clothing without the hassle of shopping for it yourself! Bamabelle scours the Vintage scene for all the greatest finds you could possibly imagine and all you do is sit back and relax while browsing through an extensive list of her finds! Gosh vintage shopping doesn’t get any easier does it? Note: the Muse loves when Bamabelle locates interesting cute camis and lists them for mere pennies for which she’d paid here in Manhattan!

The Muse is never averse to adding a little goth into her life! She admires all the FRUiTS, Lolitas, and general Harajuku girl styles! When you want a little darkness in your life you can visit Louise Black Designs for an array of wonderful gothic clothings! Gorgeous corsets, blouses, and wonderful vintage pieces will line your closet after shopping here! She’s pretty new but she’s a favorite for me already! Her corsets are absolutely drop dead gorgeous! I’ve purchased two already!

glamourbunny Corsets
The Muse has a lot of wobbly bits that need to be tucked out of the way! When she wants them tucked away and seeks to look glamorous she heads over to the glamourbunny’s closet to purchase corsets and belts and an array of gorgeous handmade clothing! The Muse recommends the Taffeta bow belt for $25! It’s the must have Fall fashion accessory in her humble opinion!

Boudoir Queen
The Muse loves a little flare! When she seeks something with flare she wanders over to Boudoir Queen to purchase it! The Boudoir Doll purses are quite a favorite here! Note: If you’re a lucky petite size you’ll be happy to shop her Living Doll Collection which features some of thee most amazing fashion finds I ever did lay my eyes on! You can pair some of her corsets with a simple pair of jeans for a really amazing look!

As you can see Etsy offers a wide array of wonderful, unusual, unique, and amazing finds! These are just a mere handful of my favorite shops! Head on over, sign up, and begin searching, finding, and adding to your favorite shops! It’s always nice to have a special piece in your closet, shower, or train case that no one else has! Just don’t tell them where you purchased it! A girl has to have some secrets right?
