Wet n Wild Photo Focus Dewy Face Primer Review & Swatches

Wet n Wild Photo Focus Dewy Face Primer (Till Prime Dew Us Part) ($4.99) is one of two new facial primers that the brand has launched for Spring 2018 which is infused with pearl pigments to give your skin a luminous glow.

I was obviously not paying attention when I purchased this as I thought it was a hydrating facial primer as dewy translated as moisturizing to me. Sadly, it’s a shimmery one which I hate. I have a full face and I always feel like using moisturizers with mica or primers with shimmer, etc…end up making my fuller face even more full. It’s like shining a strobe light on my face. I just don’t love the look. I’m of the mentality that a touch of glow is lovely but glowing all over my face not so much.

Here’s some thoughts.

Wet n Wild Photo Focus Dewy Face Primer is going to be a product you either really, really love or really, really hate. I’m not into it sadly for reasons I described above.

The texture is thick yet slightly runny and it absorbs very quickly into the skin. It’s a beige champagne shade which adds a good deal of glow to skin once applied. You might wish to either use a very small amount or mix it with moisturizer for less glow and more luminosity since it is quite pigmented on its own. I wouldn’t say it extends the wear of makeup nor does it mask imperfections like visible pores. But it does wear well under foundation and aids the application of it since it does have a dewy finish which makes foundation glide on easier. I wouldn’t say the finish was dewy though nor did it add shine or greasiness to my face. It should be suitable for most skin types. It’s also quite affordable at five dollars and a little goes a long way which makes it cost efficient. I did struggle a little with the large opening which spurted out a lot of product out. A smaller needle nose tip would have been much better.

I thought it was a little overkill for me as it’s a little too much glow but if you typically use products like this to prep you might just enjoy it. I think I’ll make use of it in the summer by mixing it with a lightweight moisturizer, applying all over my skin, and following up with a touch of cheek stain.

Wet n Wild Photo Focus Dewy Face Primer is launching now at drugstores and ulta.com.

Well, poop. I was hoping “dewy” would mean moist, not discoball, but knowing it’s WnW I should have known better. >:( well, at least you’ve saved me some sheckels again, Muse! And I appreciate that!!

    • Isabella Muse

I assumed dewy meant moist too! But I opened it up and it was a slew of champagne glow! Not a good look for me!

You are right in your ‘dewy’ assumption. Moist, not shiny. Poor (deceptive) word choice by WNW. I think the ‘glow’ is from the synthetic fluorphlogopite. I can’t say it, much less spell it. I think when that is high on the ingredients list, you just might get an outer space quality. Agree with you, but some folks will love it. I don’t mind the glowies so much in a B.B./found mix in….more control… esp in summer, but primer, nah.

Thanks because I thought I was nuts when I purchased this. I was like, “Oh dewy perfect for my dry skin!” got it home and it was pure champagne shimmer on my face. Not a good look for me! 🙁 I think some folks will adore it. I just can’t pull off glow all over my face, it makes me look all greasy. We already know I have a chubby face, no need to put a strobe light on it haha ;-D

Not to mention alumina. That one makes you think tin foil….the shiny side!

I agree. I was excited when I saw the title of this post. I can use some dewy glow right about now. But as everyone stated this should not be labled as dewy. Boo. Disappointing.

    • Isabella Muse

I thought I was alone thinking this! I was disappointed when it was all shimmer 🙁

  • Magenta Wilde

That is way too shimmery. When saw “dewy” too, I got excited. I was thinking, or maybe this will have some kind of freshly moisturized look. I have a round face and a couple acne scars and enlarged pores, so I don’t think this would do me any good. I would really love some kind of product that makes my skin look dewy and keep makeup in place, or at least keep it from traveling! Isn’t there anything out there that would make look skin look freshly moisturized?

    • Isabella Muse

I wish! that’s what I was hoping for too! Try Belif’s Aqua Bomb! It’s a nice way to get a dewy look!

Won’t be getting disco ball although I have in the dry side skin I do like their eye primer though. Another product that is too gooey for me I found is Neutrogena CC cream I like the rest how it looks healthy plumpy and soft but a bit too much shine maybe is best for older ladies than myself I have pretty good skin perhaps way too much for me. But the light color is a good match and how it blends and feels just too much glow. I wish I could lessen a bit the glow? I’m not going to toss it though. Help! 🙂

I just tried it and I love it under my Wet N Wild Photo focus foundation…But now I cant find it anywhere…Would you know where it can be purchased? I adore your column and read it all the time! xo

glad to hear it! I got it at Harmons and it’s available on WetnWild’s website as well!

  • Patricia Jancauskas

I just love it on my 61 year old face! I hope it does well in the Houston Texas humidity and heat.

  • Justine

I saw this and thought good for dry skin too. Cuz, of course, dewy is what people with snakeskin like mine strive for. Thank you for setting me straight! So, that begs the question: what primer DO YOU suggest for dry skin?

    • Isabella Muse

ha I totally can relate! Totally dry and dull here. If you’re super dry I’d totally dab on a little facial oil with your beauty blender or a sponge! It goes a long way at adding good moisture to your skin and easing the way for your foundation! https://www.musingsofamuse.com/2016/02/yes-you-can-use-your-beautyblender-to-apply-skincare.html <-------- I'm using Too Faced Primed & Peachy Cooling Matte Perfecting Primer at the moment which I'm quite liking but I don't think it is crazy hydrating to be honest. Kat Von D's Lock It Hydrating primer is quite lovely as well as Marc Jacobs Coconut Primer. ;-D Hope this helps!
