Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Gloss Review, Swatches, Photos

I discovered the Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Gloss display at my local Walgreens this week. This is a launch of twelve shades that promise a glossy color finish.

I was a little skeptical to try these as the Maybelline Color Sensational Collection isn’t always fantastic. I really want to love the lipsticks and I purchase them constantly but seriously the formula needs a revamp.

Am I right?

I did so indulge though as these are on BOGO so I got one for around six bucks and a second at three dollars. Not a bad deal. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like them.

You NEED these.

These come in a square shaped tube with a slanted sponge applicator. The applicator deserves mentioning since it saturates well with color and applies product beautifully. There are so many nice glosses around but I find an applicator can make or break that formula. Maybelline did an excellent job with the fuller sponge they provided to apply and it has a nice slant so it saturates well with color.

Now there are a slew of glosses at the drugstore to choose but I think there is a lack of opaque shades. Out of the four shades I tried from the Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Gloss Collection all four delivered excellent color pay off with an opaque finish. The colors all offer excellent pigmentation with as little as a single stroke. No need to build colors up as they have color pay off at first application.

I do this the shine factor is exaggerated as I’d say they have a high sheen but not a glossy or high shine finish. It was the one thing I was disappointed in, I wanted more shine. But outside of that the formula is excellent plus a little clear gloss on top gives them a little more pop.

The texture of the gloss is very smooth and plush. It doesn’t apply patchy nor does it have a sticky, tacky feel. Colors are vibrant and have a nice intensity to them. I got two shimmery shades and two creams and both had a nice hydrating feel with a decent wear of around three to four hours before needing a touch up. The colors aren’t so slick they slide around my mouth and the product wraps around lips nicely.

Plum Luster, Captivating Coral, Mocha-Mazing, Mirrored Mauve

Captivating Coral

Mocha-Mazing

Mirrored Mauve

There is a nice range of twelve shades to choose from however, I have hopes they do more shades in the future because as any good beauty junkie, I love my variety. Each gloss is 5ML in size which is the equivalent of a MAC Lipglass at 4.8 ml which are $15 each.

Overall, Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Gloss is an excellent drugstore pick. At around six bucks each for a ton of gloss with an opaque finish you can’t get a better deal. The lightweight texture wears very comfortably without a sticky feel. There are ton of glosses to choose from at the drugstore but these are some of the best I’ve seen in terms of pigmentation.

Plum Luster

Mocha-Mazing

Mirrored Mauve

Captivating Coral

Excellent formula, great pigmentation, and a super texture overall make them a must have. It’s like a liquid lipstick with a far nicer formula than one!

Muse Approved for purchase.

I recommend picking up a shade or two.

This week they are Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off at Walgreens.

Tried ’em?

Do share!

I purchased this item.

I gotta say, that coral looks a bit much in the swatch, but on your lips it WERKS! 🙂 I love it on you! I recently tried the Revlon colorburst lip glosses (on sale at Ulta) and fell in love with Peony – very NARS Orgasm-like!

    • the Muse

I love peony too! that’s a gorgeous shade. But do you feel like they have a weird wear? Not sticky but kinda silicone-y? These are WAY smoother and nicer. and thanks…it isn’t really coral more orange but loving it ;-D! <3!

      • HapaGirl

Yes, the Revlon ones do have a weird texture, a little plastic-y or sillicone-y is def how I would describe it. I thought it might help w/ longer wear but that doesn’t really seem to be the case. Glad these Maybelline ones work well on you, they look absolutely gorgeous! And that eye look is beautiful too, is that the moss green LE color tattoo?

        • the Muse

I thought it was me being too picky…! I really love the shade selection but the texture feels weird on my lips. 🙁 They really are nice, def try them! Noo it’s actually from the tarte eye catchers set, gunmetal smolder pencil ;D thank you!

  • Missy

I agree with HapaGirl ~ that coral one looks awesome on you! BTW, what eyeshadow are you wearing in these pics? I’ve been looking for a color like that everywhere…

    • the Muse

aw thanks missy <3! That is tarte smoldereyes pencil in gunmetal ;-D review on the way! it's with their new eye catchers kit!

  • Jen

Those look absolutely SATURATED with color! Beautiful! You’re right, I DO need these, LOL!

  • Lisa

these look AMAZING i don’t usually wear lip gloss without a lipstick over it but these look fine on their own

  • Kelly

You look pretty in that coral gloss! I had only one but it was too sheer. Maybe I should try this out! These colors should be great for fall and winter 🙂

  • Jaz

Wait. How are these different from the original color sensation glosses? I am digging these though

  • Cindy

These are awesome! That coral color looks so lovely on you! I’m so excited about these now!

  • Kate

I am already overwhelmed with different glosses, but you are tempting me with this post. You are so lucky. I swear, you can pull off such a variety of colors.

As for me? I feel like I am pretty neutral with my skin tone and eyes, on the lips I just cannot go too warm. Then again, I’ve always wondered, am I just delusional? Maybe I can’t carry off the warm shades on my face and eyes like I think I can. Does anyone else feel that their facial features have different cool-neutral-warm assessments?

Sorry, I’m rambling. My main point is not about me and my face, I want to compliment YOU and your lovely face. I would love to pull off that beautiful orange/coral shade, but I know I cannot.

    • the Muse

girl are you kidding? some shades look ghastly on me but thanks ;-D I always feel like something looks awful but it ends up getting compliments, don’t doubt yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You’re loving thank you kate ;-D <3!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ljana

Oh, these look great! I love the plum and coral/orange on you, even though the latter looks scary bright in the swatch, on you it’s very nice! I hope we get them soon over here in Eastern Europe (drugstore releases tend to be very late, but high-end ones seem to launch at more or less the same time). We just got the Color Tattoos this week, all this time I’d been picking them up when I travel and asking friends to send them from the US!

    • the Muse

aw thanks ljana! 😀 YAYYYYY color tattoos are awesome so so glad you are getting those!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Christina

I just came from Harmons (I’m in NY) and these were on display. Also, and more interesting to me, there is a new display of Revlon Photoready Eyeshadows and Primer. They are packaged similarly to the Almay Eyeshadows, with the addition of a primer and shimmery top coat. Eight different color combos (I hauled 4). Not sure if this is the right place to post but wanted to give fellow makeup junkies a heads up.

  • Camille

I bought 4 too at my local Walgreens. I got Electric Shock, Raspberry Reflections, Iced Chocolate and Gleaming Grenadine. I love them all! I have a vid with swatches and first impressions on my yt channel. These are definitely worth getting. I’m glad I didn’t hesitate to pick em up when I first saw them.

    • the Muse

yay camille glad you experienced these! I didn’t see Iced Chocolate?! Sounds like on I need!

  • Cassie

HOLY… MAYBELLINE made these!?!?!? And they’re BOGO 50% off this week at Walgreens?? And Walgreens is only three minutes away from my apartment?????? Looks like I know what I’m doing this evening…

  • Vi

Hey Muse! I’m a long-time lurker, first time commenter. I’m just wondering, do these stain lips at all? My lips are pretty pale, so it’s nice to have a little stain left behind when the gloss wears off. My holy-grail gloss is L’Oreal’s Le Gloss, because they do color my lips a bit, so I’m slightly hesitant to try another gloss. But these look gorgeous. 😀 Thanks! Love your reviews, btw! ^_^

    • the Muse

hi vi thanks for coming out to comment today and thanks for reading my babble ;-D um no, I’m sorry. I didn’t notice a stain at all tbh. Once they wore away or were wiped off it was pretty much gone. I love Le Gloss too! BIG fav of mine 😀 Aw my pleasure and I hope you like them!

  • Vanessa

They sound wonderful Muse! Did the gloss have any smell? I hated the playdo smell of Maybelline’s lipstick.

    • the Muse

they kinda taste like a citrus bubble gum sorry I forgot to mention that Vanessa doh! ;D

    • Debster

I was wondering the same thing Vanessa!!!! It’s terribly un-sexy lol. So glad it’s not that scent!

  • Tammie

I have/love 3 of these, I’m glad you like them too! Mirrored Mauve is a great MLBB for me~

  • lerina

I just picked up Glisten Up Pink and Electric Shock – very pretty colors. These do compare to the ones they originally had, formula wise. The color selection has improved as well as the pigmentation and applicator. Love that they’re not sticky, as well. I would compare these to Revlon Super Lustrous, only with a thinner consistency.

  • nicci

I just got these tonight…it was pretty cleared out too. I got Mocha-Mazing and Mirrored Mauve. Can’t wait to try them out…thanks for the post! 🙂

  • rebecca

question for you muse – d these have a scent or taste? I tried the Super Stay 10hr Stain Gloss garbage and could NOT get it off my lips fast enough due to the scent and taste; felt like I was putting cherry cough syrup on my lips! I’d like to avoid a repeat 🙂

    • the Muse

sorry rebecca I’m a goof and forgot to say about that in the review. It’s kinda a citrus bubble gum flavor, not too bad!? It seems to go away after a bit so it isn’t a flavor you’ll keep tasting all day ;D

  • Jen_m_sunshine

Just picked up 4 of them! Got 2 that you reviewed above and then added Iced Chocolate and One Shine Day (my fave)! These are so comfortable and beautifully pigmented. LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • Jaz

Picked up 2 of them for a pretty good deal. I dont like the grittiness of the glitter in the mocha color ( but its a nice nude , aka not clear gloss) . I love the fuschia one. Will definitely be buying more

  • Jen_m_sunshine

So i just picked up two more….these are my new addiction which is SO funny given I usually despise lipgloss!!! Still on the fence about the Benefit gloss set……

    • the Muse

lol hen! but but but they are awesome aren’t they!? wish they had a few more warmer shades that’s my only rant!

  • Abryda

I have 2 and I absolutely love them, not sticky, great color payoff, doe foot applicator wonderful. I got Iced Chocolate n Mocha-mazing. LOVE!LOVE!LOVE! I would recommend it to anyone I purchased it for $5.49 at Walgreens and it was BOGO 1/2 off.

  • Rachael

I just got the Plum luster shade I couldn’t believe how pigmented this gloss was.. I wouldn’t say it ‘s that SUPER shiny or anything but it doesn’t matter because it delivers great color! I want the mocha one next I think!

  • christi

Hi muse! These r awesome! I actually just discovered them this past week and I am in such lust with them! The formula feels amazing and actually moisturizes my lips, they r super pigmented, (but not so pigmented that they are more like a liquid lipstick), the colors are Fab, they’re super shiny, have decent staying power, and the packaging is gorg and looks high end! They come sealed, which is always a plus, and when u remove the seal, there r no stickers on the tube at all, which imo is what makes it look cheap and from the DS. I am totally shocked at how amazing these r! They rival any HE gloss!

    • the Muse

yay so glad you like them christi! I really enjoyed them as well! Now we need more colors!
