Blush Hits and Misses for Spring 2014

spring 2014 blush hits and misses

Some would argue that Spring 2014 was the season of the blush! There’s been SO many wonderful blush releases this year! Typically I always feel like early Spring (January) we end up seeing a good deal of skincare followed up newer base products like concealer and foundation. I never feel like Spring is heavy on color so it was really nice to see so many new blushes pop up!

There’s been SOME massive hits in blushes lately! I think we can all agree that Clinique really surprised and delighted with their new Cheek Pop Blush!

Here’s my person list of Blush Hits and Misses for Spring 2014 which I hope will help you decide which blushes you need this season and which you can skip!

blush misses

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush

Unfortunately I think these were the biggest miss this season. Everyone is raving hard about them but I found them a touch too expensive with a very powdery almost chalky texture. And where’s that candlelight, luminious glow they promise?! Missed that!

Revlon Blush
Revlon introduced several new shades of blush with their Cheek Boutique Collection and I think we all had a mini blush-gasm when we seen these displays popping up around drugstores. Unfortunately, the blush formula wasn’t nearly as good as the colors we saw in the pan. They run considerably sheerer than what you see and the texture is quite dense and dry. Total miss! Sorry Revlon!

Revlon Powder Blush

E.L.F. Studio Blush Palette

As a fan of E.L.F. Studio Blushes I was delighted they launched two new quads featuring four shades of Studio Blush! Unfortunately, these were quite chalky, powdery, and very delicate. I admit both of the two I purchased went into the trash. They just crumbled and broke. I’ll stick to the individual Studio Blush thanks very much! Save your money!

Josie Maran Argan Matchmaker Blush

Josie’s new custom blush seems lot a great idea but I see so many of these “custom shade of you blush” products that I’m a little dizzy. The formula is great here as is the pigment but I don’t think it was special enough to warrant a purchase! It’s just a regular shade of pretty warm terracotta blush but nothing super special about it which mad it a miss for me!

Jill Stuart Tulip Fields Mix Blush Compact N
The Jill Stuart Spring 2014 Collection include two limited edition shades of mix blush and as pretty and gorgeous as these are they remain a miss for me. Aside from the packaging I really don’t think the blush formula is anything to write home about. Sorry Jill, it’s a miss.

Dior Corail Bagatelle Diorblush

For Spring 2014 Dior released this very cute bow decked blush! The color was fab but the formula a little too dense and dry compared to other Dior blushes! I’d say the price was a little too high to indulge in a formula that’s mediocre. Skip it!

Bare Minerals The Endless Celebration Ready Color Boost
Bare Minerals new blush compact looks interesting enough in the pan but the color is a bit duller with a dense formula that disappointed. Kinda a miss on this!

Maybelline Master Glaze Blush Stick

Master Glaze Blush seem like a good idea. Cute chubby little swivel up cream blushes available at the drugstore? Yes please! Problem? The super glistening formula that leaves cheeks with a ton of glitter but not a ton of color.

Physicians Formula Nude Wear Glow Nude Blush

Unfortunately Physicians Formula proves a miss as this new blush is powdery, frosty, and just accentuates drier areas and pores like nobody’s biz! Miss it!

Etude House Minnie Touch Blusher

As cute as a blush featuring Minnie Mouse is I felt like Etude House failed on this one with a color that proved too sheer and utterly unwearable!

the Balm How ‘Bout Them Apples? Cheek & Lip Cream Palette

the Balm does an excellent job gifting us with not one, not two, not even three cream blushes but six of them in one palette! Creamy color, glistening cheeks, and hey, you can even use them on your lips too! Score!

have you tried the new Make Up For Ever HD blushes? probably my favorite cream blush formula! (though I haven’t tried the Chanel yet….)

  • Lulubelle

Now see, I’m loving my Ambient Lighting blush in Radiant Fuschia! It wears fantastic on my oily skin and still looks great at the end of the day, which is no small feat. Maybe it’s a better option for oily skin?

OTOH, I found Peach Pop pretty but had to really layer it to get much color, and I’m fair complected. I like it, but I love Radiant Fuschia.

I’ve tried a sample of theBalm’s cream blush in Pie and really like it, such a pretty color.

    • Isabella Muse

hey lulu! glad it works for you! Could be a better formula for oily skin! Will have to retest during the summer when my skin is a touch more oily ;-D Sorry to hear the Clinique blushes didn’t work for you! They were a fav for me this Spring 😀

  • bridget

So well researched and informed! Wasn’t expecting to see such a variety! Bravo!

  • breyerchic04

I’ve gotten one of the clinique ones (plum pop) and now need one of the peachier shades. I also desperately need the new MAC lavender PERMANENT blush!!!!!! Because mac listened!

  • dtan0914

Agreed so much about the Etude House Minnie Touch Blusher, I bought it and was severely disappointed considering the lipsticks from the collection were pretty good! At least it looks pretty…
I really want those Clinique blushes, I was worried because I thought the design was a little tacky at first, but the colors are all so suitable for me.

    • Isabella Muse

sigh yeah…:( it was so sheer and chalky sadness! and they wear all day!

  • Blushstopshere

    Great overview!

I agree with you about the Clinique Cheek Pop blushes. I have the Berry Pop shade. It’s not over the top, yet it has staying power.

  • Kary

Thank you for this! Loved your review! What about the Milani Rose blushes?

    • Isabella Muse

my pleasure glad you enjoyed it. I haven’t yet reviewed the Rose Blushes from this year so they aren’t on the list yet, hard to say if they are a hit or a miss without first trying them! So far just swatched them on the site 🙂

  • Stephanie

I ordered all of the milani rose blushes, I do not have many drug store blushes and it was my first milani purchase but I knew I needed them. I love them and then I saw the great reviews of the matte baked blushes so now those are on my list to get!

  • Sara

I do love my Peach Pop blush! I have to use my fingers to apply it, it seems like my blush brush doesn’t want to pick up the color since it’s almost a creamy texture! But its easily layered for a more subtle or more pop look!

  • Ruth

totaling digging your hits & sh!ts reviews! the Hourglass blush was a complete hit for me. I have combo skin and it wears like a dream. also, the milani matte blushes are fantastic and wear all day. That Minnie blush still disappoints me because it was so cute.

    • Isabella Muse

I wish i wish i wish I loved them! booohooo 🙁 I just wanted luminosity with them but they were rather matte and chalky! 🙁 I agree the milani mattes were fab, they need more shades…! sigh…etude house dropped the ball on that one!

I have the Hourglass blush in Diffused Heat. I’m still on the fence. One day I used it and it was meh, then I used it on my friend with similar coloring and WOW – it looked exactly like a natural flush on her. So, back to the makeup mirror, I tried it again. It looked fantastic as a no make-up look. It saved me all the steps of bronzer, blush, highlighter. I think I will keep it for those days when I’m going natch but still want to look good. Where the “glow” is good with this one is on older skin I think too. THey look good where some with more “shine” just accentuate wrinkles. I hope I explained that correctly. At any rate, I decided not to return it to sephora.

At the recent IT Cosmetics event at ULta the MA used IT powder blush in Mauve and let me just say IT blushes really last, the colors are pretty but the mauve got me more compliments than usual. It’s my new fave. My friend who is also a MA said, “that blush! you look like a vixen!” NUFF SAID HUH? lol

Macy’s is having a Clinique Bonus and I have to see if I need anything (usually makeup remover) but I may get the ginger pop blush or the plum pop. I think they are adorable.

I thought your list was FAB. THanks.

I finally got two blushes I have yearned for: Bobbi Brown’s pot rouge in Raspberry (at your recommendation, dear Muse,) and Clarins’ powder blush in Miami Pink.

The colors are awesome — BB’s Raspberry is more neutral with a bit of pink, and Clarins’ Miami Pink is a peachy pink — and they wear on my skin for hours without fading.

I’ve never been a big collector of blushes — I’m more of a lipstick gal — but my Lancôme blush had started to oxidize as I’ve had it for years. It was time!

    Hooray!

    • Isabella Muse

yay so happy you grabbed these up Susannah 🙂 wonderful! Now you need Tarte Glisten, it is AMAINGS ;D

  • Susannah

will do — I’ve never tried anything by Tarte. If you’ve done a review, please send me a link.

As always I so appreciate you. I’ve purchased many things on your recommendation. I don’t go to the makeup counter without you! 🙂
