I Slept an Hour Tops and Can’t Deal with Ichibankao and Adam Beauty Closing Indefinitely

KATE Crystallise Quartz Eyeshadow 17

In 2007, I started a little space on the Internet to talk about makeup. I never knew at that time how long or how far it would take me but here we are in a brave new world and it’s still going strong.

With time comes change with change comes nostalgia. I find myself more than ever before reminiscing about the makeup world. Beauty has evolved so much over the past several years! The saddest thing about all the change is brands that are long gone and wonderful people like Kevyn Aucoin, Brooklyn Fragrance Lover, Thierry Mugler that have left us and passed onto their next beauty life.

A few days ago I had a yearning to haul KATE’s Spring 2022 Collection. KATE is one of several brands under the Kanebo parent company. It’s an edgy little Japanese brand that gives off Anna Sui (talk about memories! A name I haven’t uttered in years right here!) vibes with it’s goth-y promo imagery. It used to be one of my favorite brands and a brand I actually started Musings of a Muse on. As Musings of a Muse, way back when, was all about Japanese Makeup Collections.

KATE Cream Cheek 3

My craving for KATE led me to Adam Beauty. I’ve used Adam for many years after PJ from a Touch of Blusher (another true OG in the world of Japanese beauty). Adam is temporarily closed as is the more expensive option, Ichibankao. It’s not like I can’t get KATE somewhere else should I chose. One of my dearest and closet friends, Mai, leaves in Tokyo. She’d happily get me whatever I want however, with postal restrictions and COVID it’s a little difficult right for her and smaller businesses like Ichibankao and Adam Beauty to ship items.

Adam has a smaller note about closing but Ichibankao has a more ominous wording say they are closed indefinitely.

So, for all my OGs, I share this news with a very heavy heart. I hope both return. I missed out chats about Japanese makeup but Musings of a Muse became so much more bigger and the frustration with actually have to track down Japanese beauty was too great a task for some readers. I get many frustrating emails about how reviewing makeup from Japan was a tease because items were difficult to track down, shipping was too high, etc…etc….

This meant Musings of a Muse went more mainstream and evolved into what you see it as it is today.

I still most those days when we’d squeal over “HOW CUTE!” the packaging was.

I hope your favorite brands and people in the world of makeup are still around. I hope Adam returns and Ichibankao but the way things are going with COVID it feels more and more small businesses and even larger ones are being forced out of business.

Which brands or makeup influencers or artists are you missing?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. If you’re that person feel free to reach out and leave a comment or follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Bloglovin‘.

Calvin Klein, at least in it’s original (and I mean the 70s) iteration. He was the first, I beleive ,to have different color “stories” with like shades in each story. There were a scad of them too, probably 8 or 10, but my favorite was Almond… I wore the yell out of the almond lipstick for years! And it came in the cool red chinese lacquer looking packaging.. All very sleek, and so very different back then! Wish his later incarnations had been as good….

I can’t say I remember the original but do remember the relaunch with the white packaging and the eye gloss everyone was trying SO damn hard to make a thing!

I haven’t tried anything from Kate, but I’ve wanted to. Maybe I’ll see if I can get any before they are gone.

I personally love reviews/discussions on Asian beauty makeup and skincare. I don’t see enough in English and I love most of what I have tried. For the most part, they really aren’t that hard to obtain as long as you don’t mind shopping online and waiting for shipping. Especially if you provide few common shops/sources for the products. I would love to see more.

KATE is still around 🙂 just two places that sold it are closed. But you can def get it, it’s not disappearing. Yes, there are tons of different places to buy and shop it for you! More so now than ever in the past. But sadly, I got so much grief about Japanese and Korean stuff being hard to find that I just gave up my passion and kept it to myself. I’ve always wanted to pick it up again but didn’t 🙁

Yeah, go back there. We get enough of the rest. AB/KB was your distinctive competency. Course, if you wrote ‘all work and no play..’ and looked like Jack Nicholson, I’d read it.

2007, when you were a weanling girl pup venturing forth into the world. OMBFG, even I was young then! Oy! I miss the full line of Fresh m/u, esp lips and blush. I miss how things were before their menopause: Lorac, Lipstick Queen, Body and Soul, Vickie’s m/u, Garden Botanika, Francesca Guerrero and ALL OF BARNEY’S. Land of Discovery, that place. Scored many a Barney at Filene’s Basement, lol! You and Snow White and the Asian pear taught me a lot. Yeah, I’m behind the trend with a 5-7 step routine, but I NEVER buy anything wrong for my skin, despite heavy allergies and immune issues. You taught me that m/u is art first, then science. S/c is science first and esthetics lagging far behind. I have noticed that AB/KB is being eclipsed, maybe due to failing attention span. Whoops, that’s over, what’s new? miss the giants of m/u and design. Shu and King Kevyn, especially. In the past, the kings and queens came from knowledge base and creativity. Now they come from the money they earned being famous for being famous. M/u from someone who made themself (pronoun ok?) a brand and monetized themselves. I think the rise of SM and internet fame has killed off some of the great aspects of the industry. If it doesn’t get a million views on TikTok, there is little interest. To me, the golden age of cosmetics is gone. It’s not how great the innovation or creativity is or how effective a product is; it’s how many followers you have.

Oh that’s kind of sad. They were some of the easiest places to get Japanese cosmetics.

Nowadays, I just use the easier sites like YesStyle, Stylevana, Amazon Japan, etc., but Adam Beauty and Ichibankao were some of the originals! And tell me about it, I have an uncle who lives in Japan, but he is not so good with getting me cosmetics even though, bless his heart, he tries. He has no clue what it is I’m asking for. LOL!

I feel like Japanese makeup is not talked about enough. I follow a lot of accounts on Instagram and YouTube, though, to keep up on the latest releases and to make sure I know what to pick up whenever I go to Asia. Korean makeup is nice, but because the industry is so big there, everything starts to look the same. When one company releases a color story, they ALL release the same thing within a few weeks of each other. At least with Japanese brands, there are some variations and interpretations of seasonal makeup, which I appreciate. I love the brand Addiction and wish I could get more of it here.

It’s hard to imagine, considering how mainstream Japanese and Korean beauty products have become, that people once got angry at you for sharing products. What a different world. I miss seeing all the super cute releases from when I started following makeup blogs, I think it was right around when Etude House did their ballet theme. I loved drooling over products, even if they were too expensive or hard to get.

I purchase some of my Japanese faves from Ichiban Mart in Japan. They aren’t cheap and neither is the shipping. Since “ichiban” translates to number one it’s a pretty common name. So when I read what you had written, I thought “oh no!”. But, Ichiban Mart is still opened.❤️
