Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara Review

Covergirl Flamed Out Waterproof Mascara

Cover Girl Flamed Out Mascara just came out and promises maximizing volume in a waterproof formula. Being a long time hater of most all Covergirl mascaras I had hopes the Flamed Out Mascara formula would be a game changer.

Take a look!

Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara

As with most Covergirl mascaras this promises a whole heck of a lot. The Volume Igniter Brush supposedly acts to add volume to every single lash for bigger, thicker, fuller lashes that removes easily but remains long wearing when on with a waterproof formula.

I had absolutely no issues with this fading or smudging and it wore strong and was indeed very easy to remove.

Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara Summer 2013

The brush has a curved design with a thinner center and two fuller, bushier areas on the right and left hand side. It captures lashes fairly nicely and pulls them upwards and out. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t call the results it produces “max volume”. This produces more of a fluttery, lightweight lash look. To say I was disappointed is an understatement but it doesn’t surprise me as this is a well known emotion when dealing with Covergirl mascaras.

I don’t necessarily think the softer look it creates is a bad thing especially if you like a lighter, fluttery mascara. I was just expecting much more dramatic volume and a little more length.

Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara Before and After

Oh well.

Do I think you need to try it?

I’d say no especially if you’re seeking longer and FULLER lashes.

Anyone try?

Thanks for the review Muse. This is just the type of mascara I like, so I will have to try it out. I especially like that it has a regular brush type wand, which I tend to prefer over the rubber bristle wands.

    • 5/16/13 10:03 the Muse:

my pleasure auro if you try would love to hear your thoughts!

Does it hold a curl? I have straight lashes and I am so tired of them straightening out after just a few hours.

    • 5/16/13 10:02 the Muse:

lemony light enough to hold curl for me I think it should be fine with straight lashes but curl them prior!

I learned a long time ago that Cover Girl’s definition of volume differs vastly from mine. I don’t think I’ve found a mascara from them that I’ve liked since their Triple mascara. (One of the very few non-waterproof mascaras that did not smudge or smear on my oily skin). I think I can skip this one.

Covergirl makes some fantastic mascaras.. so if they are all bad for you, you may have a personal chemistry issue with the brand. I know another blogger who has a similar issue with Loreal. That said, the brush design reminds me quite a bit of Almay get up and grow, except for the dip in the middle, which gives me a very similar effect as this did for you.. lots of long fluttery lashes with good separation but not much volume.

    • 5/16/13 9:42 the Muse:

chemistry issue? Hmmmm….not sure how chemistry facts into mediocre results with mascara 😀

  • 5/15/13 22:09 Kristin:

    Muse, what’s your favorite mascara?

    • 5/16/13 9:51 the Muse:

at the moment can’t live without mac’s new gigalash formula!

  • 5/16/13 1:04 Jenny:

Great review, Muse! I agree that this mascara doesn’t produce super volume. It does seem like a decent mascara though, but I think there are better ones out there. Thanks again for the awesome review! I love your blog, btw :)

    • 5/16/13 9:49 the Muse:

aw thanks jenny love ya back! agreed….it’s ok, but there are so many other formulas that produce way better results!

  • 5/16/13 4:26 Heather:

    cute packaging at least!

  • 5/16/13 9:44 Liz Cat:

Covergirl’s summer releases has been such a dud to me. this just doesn’t seem to do much and you already have such nice eyelashes!!
But like you said, I don’t find anything special in cg’s masacara. (never jumped on that lashblast wagon) Maybelline has always been my favorite drugstore mascara pick, and really overall favorite until tarte had to steal my mascara loving heart with lights, camera, lashes! lol

  • 5/16/13 10:29 Sara:

My latest obsession has been with Bare Minerals Flawless Definition Volumizing Mascara. It makes my eyelashes crazy long and full! I got it as a GWP when I ordered from their last 12 hour sale, such a great deal! I bought a $10 set, paid $4 for shipping and got the $18 mascara free!

  • 5/16/13 10:30 Lara:

    The packaging is hideous! Ugh

  • 5/16/13 14:23 Josephine:

I too, have had zero luck with Cover Girl mascaras. Especially the whole last blast thing. Major hate! Maybelline The Rocket Waterproof is my go to. Love it! Ditto to Liz Cat. Maybelline has always been my fave drugstore mascara as well.

    • 5/16/13 14:47 the Muse:

same here on the lash blast…that has such a cult following and I have to ask WHY!?!?!?!

  • 5/16/13 17:41 Tammie:

The volume isn’t AMAZING (or much at all really) but it’s enough for me. I like the fluttery look and I like the brush since it separates really well. I don’t think the formula is anything to write home about but I definitely like it a lot for the brush at least haha

  • 5/16/13 18:35 Genevieve:

I’m using the Covergirl Clump Crusher, after I had to switch from a little sample of Benefit’s Yes They’re Real Mascara. I actually really really like clump crusher, with it’s curved plastic brush and fantastic length (for me) and definition. I wish it had a little more volume, so I’m looking for another mascara to layer with this. Any ideas? Have you tried it before?

    • 5/17/13 9:40 the Muse:

i didn’t really love clump crusher unfortunately :( right now my favorite mascara is def MAC Gigalash ;-D GREAT for layering!

  • 5/16/13 18:38 Dina:

I remember, many many years ago, when Cover Girl was THE drugstore brand. I mean, who didn’t want to be a Cover Girl? Revlon was for older women, BonnieBell was for kids/preteens, Wet ‘n Wild was that cheap brand that always smelled like it had already gone bad because nobody bought it, and Maybelline…was just kind of ‘that other brand’. But Cover Girl? That was the cool brand. Now it’s like they can’t even make something that every other brand hasn’t, or can’t, make a thousand times better. It is so sad.

  • 5/17/13 2:20 Christi:

I also love cover girl mascaras, they’re the only thing I like from the brand. I love Lash Blast original in the orange tube & Clump Crusher. That being said, this one certainly didn’t wow me. I think what the other reader meant about “chemistry” is just that everyone’s skin/hair/lashes, etc. reacts differently with different products. As everyone knows, makeup is so very YMMV on different people. So maybe your lashes just don’t respond well to CG Mascaras! I always say I have bad chemistry with blush lol because even though I have dry/normal skin, no brands ever last on me more than a couple hours (and that’s if I’m lucky)! And I’ve tried all brands and all types, including the long lasting cheek stains that most people have great luck with!

  • 5/17/13 10:54 lil’eve:

I expected poor volume just because its cover girl lol. I havery thin and sparse lashes and if it wasn’t for missha 4d at $5 I would look like I just got eyeballs. Great review muse!

    • 5/20/13 11:52 the Muse:

thanks eve ;-D glad you thought so!

  • 5/19/13 12:21 April:

I tried this and pitched it after two uses. It has a MONSTER brush, and it was really tricky to apply to only lashes and not get smudged all over my eyelids. I didn’t care for the formula, either. It straightened my lashes right out.

  • 5/20/13 21:29 Lisa Marie:

This brush, from the pic, looks sorta like the Almay Get up and Grow mascara. I have been less than wowed by that one, so I will definitely pass on this one.

  • 5/25/13 4:47 Tracey:

I loved the commercial for CG Clump Crusher Mascara, the one with Pink using it. So I bought it, and it was a mediocre mascara at best. It did not crush any clumps for me!
My fave drugstore brand used to be Maybelline’s Illegal Lengths Mascara, but I think they stopped making it years ago. (Although… It may be back now).
So lately I’ve been hooked on that little $4.00 famous green and pink tube by ??? Awe, crap! I’ve forgotten who makes the green and pink tube! Maybelline? Cover Girl?
Anyways, my last mascara purchase was influenced by a sale at Shoppers Drugmart. It’s “Annabelle Expandible Mascara”, and so far, so good. It provides nice length, and then you twist the top of the handle and the brush changes so it then gives more volume.
I’ve also tried many of Avon’s mascaras, cuz I used to sell Avon. They didn’t stand out as being great either. I’m a little addicted to mascara… I’ve tried so many brands and formulas. I’ve I could only use 1 makeup product for the rest of my life, it’d have to be my mascara!!! I look dead without it! I’ve always wanted to try a high end brand to see if they are any better than the drugstore ones, but I just couldn’t bring myself to shell out $20.00 and up, for it! Lol
    Thanks for the great post!

  • 6/17/13 0:46 Brigette:

Oh thank goodness I read your post before I bought this mascara. I saw it today and was tempted to buy it because the packaging looks so cute but I decided I should do research. Phew, thanks for doing this post. I’ll try another mascara. :)

    • 6/17/13 9:15 the Muse:

      my pleasure Bridgette :)

  • 6/22/13 11:21 M:

I am actually really loving this mascara….my latest mascara love has been Mally volumizing, but I wanted to have a cheaper option for the summer, I find the brush very nice, and with a little back and forth strokes I get a nice feathery winged out lash

  • 7/3/13 22:18 Sam:

I was just about to post my own review on Flamed Out. I didn’t find it very good either – not something I would buy again.
