Cargo x Star Wars The Light Side Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

I purchased this item and I receive a small commission if you shop using the links in this post.

Cargo x Star Wars The Light Side Eyeshadow Palette ($28) is one of two, limited edition eight pan eyeshadow palettes that launched to celebrate the release of Star Wars The Last Jedi. Star Wars is my religion I’ve been geeking out to it since as far back as I can remember so when I heard about this launch I was very excited. I have to express disappointment in Cargo’s PR Team though as when they sent me information on the release I asked them for a sample of the eyeshadow palette and was told it was selling out crazy fast and samples were limited. I totally understood at the time and I purchased it from Kohl’s directly instead. I had plans on buying the entire collection as a fan anyway but I wanted samples as I felt they’d arrive faster versus me purchasing the items from Kohl’s website.

I was pretty sad to see the collection hasn’t sold out, it’s readily available, and I’m sure a single eyeshadow palette sample would have been easy enough to send to me for review considering nothing sold out. Yet another case of irritating makeup FOMO. None the less, I am just happy I was able to get my purchase in without it selling out fast even though I had to wait a little longer to review it for you because shipping from Kohl’s takes a while longer than it would from a public relations team directly.

Here’s the deets!

As a Star Wars fan well, this isn’t going to get your blood pumping too hard. It’s a simple black matte sturdy cardboard palette with a gold Rebel Alliance icon and Star Wars The Last Jedi printed on the front. The most exciting aspect of the palette is the inside which has a glittery overlay that surrounds the mirror and eyeshadow wells that looks like the galaxy dotted with little stars. But overall, well, it’s not exactly in your face Star Wars merch if you know what I mean!

None the less, I’m a girl and girl’s are just now being recognized as Star Wars fans so, I’m always pretty darn excited when some makeup brand decides to take on my fandoms. I just wish they’d do it with a bit more creativity. I mean, the packaging is pretty basic and they didn’t even name the shades after characters, places, or events in the film. The shades are merely numbered from I-VIII, a nod to each film.

As I mentioned above the palette is available in two shade selections one of which is inspired by the Light Side and that’s the one I purchased. There’s also a Dark Side Palette which I also purchased but Kohl’s messed up and sent me two Light Side Palettes so, I have to return and re-purchase and I’ll review that as soon as I get it.

I am delighted with the shade selection here. It’s a round up of neutral, easy to wear shades with soft, silky, easy to blend formulas. The palette contains three satin shades and the rest are silky mattes. I don’t think these are shades that actually work well together but they do well on their own for quick eye looks or to coordinate well with metallics or even as transitional shades. I actually liked the shades to use in daily, natural looks as I can quickly swipe on a single color, accent with eyeliner, put on a load of mascara and have an instant eye brightening look that’s work friendly and easy to apply. The colors are pigmented, silky, have little fall out, and blend easily. This is the perfect aging eye palette!

I’m not sure the shades evoke Star Wars vibes but all in all this palette contains an excellent selection of neutral, easy to apply shades, with a beautiful silky formula that blends well and looks great.

Loved it.

Cargo x Star Wars The Light Side Eyeshadow Palette is available now at kohls.com.

Hey Sista Muse…it is a really pretty palette and I too am a Star Wars fan having grown up with the original movie. But I’m nowhere near the fan-girl that you are!

But I haven’t bought anything from Cargo in years, having given up on the brand because their palettes are made in China and I also found them to have an awful, chemical smell. Do tell where this is made.

  • Andi

I know it might be boring, but it is a bit clever to name the shades I – VII after the movie numerals. Even though I still call them the original and new ones LOL
I like the neutrality of the shades. Thanks for the review

    • Isabella Muse

I thought it was a LITTLE uneventful lol! But I guess with shades like this you can’t really name them after characters or things in the movie without looking dumb because the shades are so neutral and can’t really represent anything aside from maybe the shade of Chewie’s fur lol! My pleasure <3!

      • Andi

Chewie’s fur cracked me up. Other names could include Han Solo’s vest brown, C3PO gold, Tatooine beige.

        • Isabella Muse

hehe and yes, yes, yes, all excellent! I’d like a red lipstick called Sy Snootles’s Pout!

Star Wars is my religion too and I am also astounded by the lack of items for women fans. While looking at all the t-shirts at Kohl’s, the majority of them are in the men’s section. The others are in juniors, which is funny, because that, to me, is more about being “on trend” vs. the people who are buying them as a die-hard fan. Kohl’s had nothing in the women’s section. I thought to myself, Hey there are women who are SW fans! We all grew up with the original ones and are now in our 40s so we deserve the same treatment as men! I was glad to see these palettes, but like you said, they didn’t even name the shades anything cool. Glad to hear the quality is nice. I was on the fence with these palettes and in the end I didn’t buy them because they aren’t anything special, as far as SW goes. I guess I’ll just have to represent my SW fandom by showing off my huge Princess Leia tattoo I got on my back after Carrie Fisher died! May the Force Be With You, Muse!

    • Isabella Muse

oh my gosh don’t feel that way! Lately, there has been so many options for woman! Check Target they have fantastic Leia shirts one of which says may the force be with you forever! Great t-shirt in my opinion! Also, heruniverse.com has a ton of Star Wars jackets, t-shirts, sweaters, and more. Disney also has a ton of ladies t shirts, jackets, and more! Hot Topic is loaded with great tshirts, jackets, and more also Torrid and loungefly for accessories like great bags or scarfs/mittens. Truly there are tons of options for ladies ;-D Oh my god I’d love to say your ink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And also with you!

      • Carol G

Well now, thanks for the tips! I guess I didn’t think to look at Target or Hot Topic, duh! I just happened to be at Kohl’s because I had seen your post about these palettes and thought I’d pick up a shirt too. But all of their shirts were mostly in the men’s section, which is fine, I can wear a man’s shirt but I just had to laugh because I thought it was funny (in a sad way) they had nothing for “women”.
I’ll email you a picture of my tattoo. I got it after Carrie Fisher died. I am 49 and grew up as Leia as my hero. So when she died, it really affected me so I decided to have her with me forever. Because she is part of who I am.

I saw these in Kohls a few weeks back and you are correct, they don’t appear to be flying off the shelves. I was waiting for your review to see if you got Light or Dark. Cargo hasn’t impressed with the last few releases especially the Emerald collection which is now $10 at TJX. I may pass on these and look at the other items mainly for collectors items.

    • Isabella Muse

I thought for sure they would but nope, still readily available and likely to go on sale as soon as the movie hype dies down. I got both but sadly they sent me two light palettes! Blah! I didn’t try the Emerald Colection but now sad it is already at TJX for $10 bucks geez that was quick!

Think you’re right about aging eye friendly, but now have 3 big Ready palettes, plus this doesn’t say Star Wars to me at all. Love the Leia memorial tat, Carol. Losing her, then Debbie, ugh. Eras can end so quickly. At least they both are well memorialized in film. But it isn’t the same as anticipating what would be next, from Carrie.

I love the pigmentation and the fabulous shade choices – everything is so wearable! I’m actually surprised that I hadn’t heard of this until your blog; I’m a huge Cargo Cosmetics junkie and have pretty much all their palettes (except for this year’s Holiday palette) – IDK how I overlooked this one! It clearly needs more love. Despite exceeding my six-palette quota of the year, I’m going to buy this for sure! Thanks for the swatches, Muse!

    • Isabella Muse

Oh wow! It was everywhere surprised you didn’t hear about it 😀 My pleasure <3!

  • genevieve

Both my sons (now well and truly adults!) love Star Wars as well.
Now to the palette. I am glad that you like it Muse because I was a little disappointed in the shade selection – you know – hoping for some golds, a purple, greens etc.
Some of these shades look like dupes of many other palettes out at the moment.
It doesn’t really sing Star Wars to me.

    • Isabella Muse

I’m boring as hell! I really liked the nude, neutral tone of the palette 😀 but no def doesn’t inspired Star Wars in me either 😀

  • Melissa

OOPS.. forgot to comment when this post popped up. As we talked about, I’m a life-long die hard star wars fan girl. I’m glad I skipped this palette and bought a cute rebel themed purse instead on amazon. If this shows up at tjx or on clearance somewhere I’ll haul the whole collection but I just saw the nail polish set on the cargo site and I’m disappointed in those too. Thanks for the review! I’m going the movie Friday afternoon. So excited!

    • Isabella Muse

I totally understand how you feel! On sale it is worth a purchase but at full price, well, mmmm! Debatable 😀 I do love the quality of the shadows though and that made me Muse Approved it but not so much the basic packaging! My pleasure! Have fun ;-D I’m going tonight! can’t wait!

  • Usagi

I also got a PR email about this and was told they were selling out. I still see them on their site and Kohl’s.

Anyways, I’ve been searching for a review of these shadows and haven’t seen anything except from you and the one review on Kohl’s saying they weren’t as pigmented. The packaging is a bit cooler than the CoverGirls one IMO but at this point, I’m going to wait for the collection to go on sale. Maybe it will make it’s way to TJMAXX / Marshall’s !

Will you be reviewing the Dark Side shadows once you get it?

    • Isabella Muse

I got the same canned reply from PR telling me it was selling really fast and samples were limited but there it is, all in stock at Kohls. *insert rolling eyes here” I was cool with the pigment, they had fairly good color pay off however, we aren’t talking TF, UD, or MAC pigment ;D it is a big improvement over CG’s release but not by much and yes, you’ll def be able to get them on sale at some point! Sure will!
