Clinique Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer

Clinique Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer ($18) are a new are a new liquid, high-shine lip color with full color payoff that has a built in primer that promises up ti six hours of wear. Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer are a follow up last year’s launch of Pop Lip Colour + Primer.

One of the things that stood out for me with Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer was the color selections. There are a lot of really pretty nude lip shades in this collection and that was very, very, appealing to me for Spring looks.

Take a look!

So sadly Clinique Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer are getting poor reviews on Sephora already! I can definitely understand why as they aren’t the most perfect lip product in the world but I discuss some of the bad and good things in this review and you can decide after that if you want to throw some money down on them.

These some in a short, squat, chubby little square tube that holds 0.20 oz of lip color. They have a tear drop sponge applicator that saturates very, very well with color.

I think the formula is a hybrid of sorts as it is a thicker, tackier formula but the consistency, glossier finish, and pigmentation is more of a lacquer or liquid lip color of sorts. It’s very thick, quite tacky, and some colors proved difficult to spread on lips due to the thicker texture. My lips are fairly dry and a bit cracked at the moment so these applied really poorly. First off they dragged, secondly, color looked quite patchy. I found the solution to get the smoothest most even finish was to go over the color a few times with the applicator. This helped a lot! Funny, as even when my lips weren’t as badly dry I still ran into issues with draggy application. But again, running the applicator over my lips a few time results in a smoother finish. Just be careful, you wanna prep well before using these as the color tends accentuate drier areas badly and also tends to fall into the natural lines of your lips. A little lip scrub prior and lip balm will help a good deal. For sensitive users these have absolutely no flavor or fragrance.

One of the two nicest things about this formula is the excellent pigmentation and the nice shine these provide. I purchased four shades and all four had really good pigmentation with opaque coverage on a single layer. They also had a very shine to them with a wear of about four hours without migrating around my mouth. They do feel lightly hydrating but I think the tackiness and stickiness of the gloss takes away from that moisture slightly.

I admit I disliked them a good deal when I first tried them but I’m slowly starting to love them. They wear quite long and have excellent color pay off. Plus I really love the color selection here as there are plenty of easy to wear nudes. However, they don’t wear six hours on my lips and they are a chore to apply. You shouldn’t have to work this hard to apply lip color 🙂

I wouldn’t recommend a purchase of more than one Clinique Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer. Try one out, see what you think, if you love it, hey awesome! I just think it is a formula that won’t be agreeable to everyone so playing it safe might be the best bet here.

As for me?

I’m keeping the four I purchased. This formula is slowly growing on me!

Clinique Pop Laquer Lip Colour + Primer are launching now on counters and are available at Sephora.com.

I should probably clarify my statement based on my haste to order. I am going to get these and then I am going to get the LM bag.. LOL

        • Jackie

I just ordered a couple things to get the bag! 🙂
but….I’m glad to see I’m not alone in my thoughts on this lip product. it was described as full coverage, which it’s not, and I’d gotten 2 shades in it and am taking them back. loved the look of it, and the shades, but it is actually just sticky lipgloss with an $18 price tag! in my opinion, of course.

          • Isabella Muse

I was good with the pigment, I got nice color from all the shades but the formula was very, very thick, sticky and difficult to apply. 🙁 Haha I did too! I just need that bag! Ugh!

Not that i think glosses are hydrating, but most of the time i go to them when my lips are feeling dry, like buxom, lorac alter ego, abh gloss etc so this is kind of disappointing. Plus i like to alternate between matte and glossy lips so my lips can take a break, and most of the time a gloss should be easier/quicker even if you use liner with it lol. i think i was hoping for them to be more like the dior addict fluid stick, and these seem more milky and opaque than id hope for the formula.

I tried these at the DutyFree store when coming back to London…and I loathed them.
It was just…goopy…and tasted weird. For me tackiness is a deal breaker – I have sinfully long hair, and even when its tied up bits and pieces fly out (and get stuck to whatever is on my lips).
I agree with you – it should not be THIS much work to apply a lip colour.

Which is strange, since I love Clinique, and usually their releases are pretty solid.

    • Isabella Muse

No weird taste here but def goopy and very very thick! I agree! Clinique has good quality control because it is rare their makeup is a miss especially lipgloss. I’m slowly trying to get on board with the formula because I love these colors so darn much!

I agree those colors look very wearable and pretty, too bad the formula isn’t better. There are so many good glosses out there, I can see why people are disappointed. For thick, tacky glosses, I add some lip balm to thin it out, and that usually takes care of the problem

    • Isabella Muse

I love how pretty they look but the formula drives me up a wall! Clear gloss works too!

  • kellly

Strange – the comments on this post seem to be for the LM VIB set, not the Clinique stuff. I’m going to comment about the Clinique stuff and say that the review makes them seem disappointing but the colors look great on you. I might have a look at them and see what I think – can they overcome their application problems to where I’d like to get one, too? Hmmm…

    • Isabella Muse

Yeah lol! I noticed that too. I guess the conversation just followed over here for some reason! I’m slowing coming to terms with the problems! Slowly!

  • vintageloli

Ugh. I agree with you. i am way more excited for the lip/cheek oils that are coming out. I don’t think I’d ever use the oil on my cheeks but it is fabulous on the lips!

  • Nat

I rather like the look of these, I might pick one up once they’re out in the UK. ^_^

  • Upsy Daisy

How odd. I was seriously tempted by these just because of how awesome they look, even though I’m definitely more of a lipstick lover personally. But if the formula is that tacky I will just leave it I think, even If my hair is not that long.

Now the pop glazes are an entirely different story 😉 so are the lid pops! I mean I know Cream Pop is just another shimmery champagne, but it has my name written all over it LOL 😀

I have been using Clinique for years but their products are just too expensive. Its a little overkill on products that claim to do the same thing – think if they come up with something new and better, then they should fade out the old.

I now use the Lip Rescue to avoid lip wrinkles – and it makes my lip stock / gloss just look so much better. And its half the price.
