Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream

Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream ($26.50) is a new hydrating eye cream that Clinique launched late December for Spring 2016. I quickly purchased this when it popped up in Sephora but I do urge you to take advantage of the free sample available using promo code PEPEYE with any $25 purchase at Sephora.com because this is a formula you have to try for yourself to see if you’ll like it before committing to a full size in my experience.

Here’s the deal, Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream promises a lot of different benefits but only truly excels at one in my opinion. My tube is almost complete now so I feel like I can review the product fairly enough after daily use.

This is promoted as an instant brightening and hydrating eye cream that has blend of peptides to help to combact the “visible effects of your busy lift”. The formula also promises to de-stress tired looking eyes so they look brighter, hydrated, and more awake.

This comes in a 0.5 oz tube with a round ball applicator that promises a cooling tip to de-puff eyes. I actually struggled with the applicator as I didn’t understand how to squeeze the eye cream into it. It has a little hole where product was supposed to flow but I twisted and squeezed and nothing. I read the enclosed instructions but there was nothing about how to get the eye cream to flow. Finally, I realized at the side of the box there was a diagram showing you had to pull tbe ball applicator up and squeeze to release product. Ummm yeah that was my duh moment.

The applicator is nice to gently massage the eye area but it doesn’t actually de-puff my puffiness nor does it feel cooling!? Some might find the lack of a slant a little irritating as the ball is a little awkward for use around the eye area.

The eye cream is a nice rich cream that absorbs easily under eyes and leaves them very nicely hydrated. It also works very well under concealer and other makeup and supplies quite a good deal of moisture to the area without being greasy or shiny. This in fact the area it excels at. Moisture! There’s plenty of good moisture here.

Sadly, I didn’t experience much else aside from moisture. My eyes weren’t brighter, they didn’t look more awake. It supplied a good deal of moisture but I wouldn’t say the formula did much else. It might be a younger girl or guy’s game as perhaps if you have puffiness from lack of sleeping or a late night gaming this might treat puffiness and make your eyes more awake.

Personally, I didn’t really see any changes using this well over a month daily!

It’s a nice moisturizing eye product but that’s about the extent of the formula for me.

Anyone try it?

What was your experience?

I’m about 2 weeks into it, and it’s doing nothing but hydrating. I was really disappointed because I hoped this would be my one true eye cream. Once I got the package open, I like it a lot better than tubs or pumps though. So I’m not totally ruling out repurchase because I do need something that hydrates my eye area.

    • Isabella Muse

I agree! A lot better than a pump! I just had this duh moment where I was all how the hell do you open this?! haha! I wish it actually treated, I use clinique eye repair and it does a great job on finer lines, if this did too I’d like switch out my repair for it as I like how hydrating this is in comparison!

I couldn’t open it for days. I got mine with no box so no diagram. It was crazy. At some point I got it. Don’t feel bad , you weren’t the only one . 😉

Originally when the product was first posted on Sephora, there was a caveat that said that this was an eye cream for women aged 18-25 (or something like that) that were only looking to “take care of their skin.” That ruled me out! That caveat has since been removed. I find it strange that they would put that bit of copy there in the first place and then remove it. That alone turned me off to it. I usually can’t use eye things that have a metal rollerball because eventually my eyes get red and swollen – either it’s the nickel in the rollerball or bacteria that sets in there. The fact that this dispenser doesn’t have a metal ball is promising, but I would like something that’s going to attack dark circles and slight bags.

Interesting! I didn’t catch that Cindy! I think that’s about right really. If you’re of a certain age this might provide some moisture but as far as anything such as depuffing, etc no way 🙁 Honestly my dear, you’re never going to find something to treat dark circles, that one is work for your concealer. I’ve tried it all and nothing actually eliminates dark circles sadly :-/

      • Cindy

Oh yeah, nothing works for dark circles but I’m always prone to buying one that claims it does hahahaha.

      • kellly

So yeah, it sounds like an eye cream for people who don’t really, really need eye cream!

  • Amber

I tested it on the back of my hand and within 10-15 seconds had a violent burning reaction to it.

Ain’t on my list of must-trys!

  • Chris

I have to say if your looking for moisturizing eye cream the cerve one works quite well! I reviewed it on my channel and it works so well for moisture and I felt it didn’t interfere with makeup absorbs easily and I really enjoy it for 14.99 but prices will vary depending on where you live!

  • Erica

Well I literally had to google “how to open Clinique pep start” so you are definitely not the only one! Thanks for the tutorial:)

  • vannessa

hello, i was considering to buy this for my super duper puffy eyes but i see now that its anti-puff selling point is overstated. so thank you for your honest review. do you have another suggestion to treat this specific point instead?

    • Isabella Muse

You’re welcome Vanessa. I’ve tried a lot of different eye creams but none work on my puffy eyes sadly. I run a wash cloth under ice cold water and I place it under my eyes for a few minutes before applying my skincare. This helps a bit. But sadly, all the eye creams I’ve tried don’t really deal with puff very well.
