Which Beauty Product Received Frustratingly Good Reviews But Didn’t Work for You?

You ever run across that one beauty product that everyone raves on and on and on about but it doesn’t work for you! Are you applying it wrong? Is it not meant for your skin type? Did you get a bad batch of the formula? Why doesn’t it work for you but it seems to work for everyone else?

Here’s the least product that’s received frustratingly good reviews that simply doesn’t work for me! Let’s see if you agree!

And sadly, it’s Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara for me. I’ve had this since the day it came out and I’ve used it quite often and I can in no way, shape, or form, recreate the mile long lashes I’ve seen influencers and other beauty bloggers create using this. I’ve seen people apply it and their lashes look like they’ve grown six inches.

On me? Doesn’t work.

The formula is too thin and I can’t get enough volume with it not to mention it barely adds any length! I’ve tried it with my lash curler, I’ve tried it without my lash curler, I’ve even added in other mascaras and I get mediocre results.

Also, it is impossible to take off! Seriously, this stuff doesn’t budge! It has a Japanese mascara formula! If you have oily skin this will be your bestie as it won’t smear at all!

Sadly, the fact it doesn’t lengthen is a big issue for me!

Am I crazy?

Does Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara work and I’m doing something wrong?

Or is the hype just making it seem amazing when in fact it isn’t?

Do share your thoughts on it and tell me about a beauty product that gets a lot of hype and amazing reviews but doesn’t work for you!

I dislike with a passion L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara. Just didn’t work for me. And Fenty Beauty eye primer. I used it a few times and ended up passing it on to someone else.

  • Dominique

For me it’s the Laura Mercier powder. I can’t honestly understand the whole buzz around it ; tried it, and went back to my Coty Airspun. I think Laura Mercier is a beautiful brand, and they have amazing products. But that powder…

    • Isabella Muse

I had that experience with the undereye powder! Everyone loved it but I never understood it!

    • Dee

I agree! That was something that I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of until recently because of the wonderful reviews but I didn’t like it.

  • gittersaurus

Everything from Saie! Holy moly what an over-hyped line of dollar-store quality “marshmallow” cream!

Mascara: anything Eyeko, esp the one with the ridiculous brush with the ball at the inner end of the bristles. What dunderhead thought of that? If you go for the little lashes with the tip, that ball hits on skin by your brow, chin, etc. You can’t get it off with a jackhammer and crisco. Beyond stupid and they still make it, I think. I think Eyeko is a UK brand with Japanese formulas? Had another one (black magic?) that I hated as well. Palettes? Marc Jacobs Steeletto. Waited forever to cave, did not get a discount iirc, resisted the raves….and it looks like a Dreckhaufen (see your Yiddish speaking friends) on me. Then there’s CT Sex on Fire blush. CT and I are not friends in general. I threw out the Eyeko, but think I might go home and try Steeletto with Sex on Fire, just to remind myself how awful ‘good’ makeup can be. Both CP Fame and LC Venus Immortalis are vastly better cool/gray on me. And they’re far cheaper than MJB. For Japanese mascara, I like the Isehan Heroine Make formulas. As far as Maybelline goes, the Snapscara is ok, if you need tubing. I’d rather tube than take a rock climbing ax and petroleum to my lashes.

For me it is the Laneige Lip Sleeping mask, it is a well loved product, but does nothing for me.

    • Isabella Muse

Oh my heart! LOL! I actually like it! So sorry it didn’t work for you!!!!!!!

  • Adrienne

It was the Loreal Air Volume mascara. I tried multiple times and all the normal tips and tricks and just couldnt get anything but a clumpy mess which eventually felt heavy which defeated the air volume claims. But that was just me, others love it.

    • kellly

Nope, I’m with you. I didn’t love it either. On me, it smudged and left me with raccoon eyes.

  • Maxine

    1. Tarte’s Shape Tape, I just don’t understand the product. It’s so, so heavy and thick, plus drying.
    2. MAC lipsticks, I love the colors, but find the formulas lack luster or drying. There are so many good lipsticks out there, MAC just isn’t it.
    3. DiorShow Mascara, it’s nice, but so are drugstore mascaras for a quarter of the price. Definitely paying for the DIOR name here.
    4. NARS Orgasm, don’t cancel me. It’s sooooo sparkly for a blush. I no likely.
    5. Marc Jacob’s Highliner, how does it not smear on you? Because it totally just creases and smears everywhere on me.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL we still love you for not liking NARS Orgasm 😀 I honestly never issues with smearing eyeliner because my eyes are terribly dry.

    • kjh

Agree on shape tape, but due to ingredients. Dior masc is also not worth the tag. Orgasm: I have ~4 due to old style palettes. It’s the kind of shade I HATE, since I think it clashes with my skintone. And I’m bloody thrilled that someone else has smear, but more disappear within a minute with the MJB liners. Oy, what a let down. I live for colored liners.

For me it was the tatcha silk primer. No matter what I could not get any foundation to look good on top of it, it made my normal skin oily and broke me out.

    • Isabella Muse

oh god welcome to my world. I regretted paying so much for it. I’m dry and it just felt so weirdly oily on me too! I couldn’t get it to look right at all!

    • Michelle

      I agree with you!
I really haven’t had all that much of a positive experience with Tatcha in general.
I actually have a few of their pricey products almost full and I haven’t continued to use them because I have felt that they weren’t that “amazing.”

The Water Cream more specifically, didn’t leave my skin very moisturized and I tried a couple versions of it. Once again, the hype was much more relevant than the actual product’s ability to do its job. Maybe it’s just me?

    • kjh

My ‘deluxe sample’ came dried out, so I never had the displeasure, lol.

    • Donna Jensen

One of 2 hyped products just gave me cystic acne; either Tatcha Water Cream light gel formula or Milk Hydrogrip primer. Now I am wondering if it’s the Tatcha since I tried their other moisturizer and that also caused me to break out but my skin looks for any opportunity to develop acne so I assumed it was just too heavy.

  • Michelle

For me it was Grande Brow.
I could not believe the amount of hype people gave this product. It was expensive, there wasn’t even the smaller mascara-like sized option retailed for $36.00 contained, what I believed to be 3/4 full of product (at least the one I bought), and truly did absolutely NOTHING for my brows; which truly leaves one dissatisfied, but more importantly, angry.

    • Isabella Muse

Aw I’m so sorry to hear that! I swear I rage when something gets such great reviews and fails to work for me!

  • Abby

I had the same experience as you with the Maybelline mascara. I was super disappointed!!

    • Isabella Muse

Oh thank! The way people go on and on and on and on about it makes me wonder what the heck I’m missing!

    • kellly

Same. On me, it caked and was drying and by the end of the day I ended up looking horrible. I think I used it twice and gave up. I don’t know what the hype is about on that stuff.

  • Lacy

So I really liked this when I first got it but now that it’s been open a couple weeks it just doesn’t perform the same and is already starting to dry out hella fast. It’s been maybe 3-4weeks. Grr

So I’m in the market to try something else! Any suggestions?

    • Isabella Muse

I’m a lights camera lashes girl always and forever! It never fails me!

  • Reem

Taste shape tape didn’t work for me ( too dry ), and L’Oreal lash paradise was ok, but didn’t live up to its hype!

Also, the Revlon one step hair dryer , everyone raved about it, but it didn’t really work well on me ( hair looked frizzy !)

    • Donna Jensen

The Revlon hair dryer I second. It broke my hair off at the crown.

  • V

That Summer Fridays face mask that was everywhere a few years ago. I think it was called Jet Lag or something? People raved about it but I felt like I had just smeared vicks vap-o-rub all over my face and couldn’t wipe it off fast enough.

  • KAREN MCKINNEY

For me its “samples” that are fabulous and you spring for the full size that just doesn’t work like the (maybe “concentrated” ?) sample.

Latest for me is Goop exfoliation !

Expensive full size has never worked for me like the sample did.

  • katie reynolds

It is the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. It went on beautifully on my wrist, but when applied to my face, it was streaky and odd looking, no matter what I applied under it. I wanted to have an easy tinted moisturizer for every day, and this was not it. I have passed it on to a younger friend.

    • Isabella Muse

Aww sorry! That’s a fav of mine I’m so sad it didn’t work for you!

  • Taylor Jaye

Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara! It just makes my lashes look like a clumpy, stubby mess. I seriously don’t get the hype over it. I tried it many times and got it in gratis several times when I worked at Sephora. It just always looks terrible on me.

  • kellly

I’m underwhelmed with the Sky High mascara, too. It’s the best Maybelline mascara I’ve ever used and I do like it but I don’t get anything like the youtubers do when they use it. I’ve never been a Maybelline mascara fan but I’m using Sky High consistently and am satisfied with it.
I’ve found the change in Kat von D to be disappointing. I used to like their edgy colors but now they’ve stopped making 3/4 of the line and nothing stands out to me.
And while I’m complaining, I’m sick of eyeshadows only coming in palettes any more. Sure, it’s a good way for companies to make money but I don’t want to spend $40 on a whole palette when there are only maybe a few colors that I’m actually going to use. I miss when eye shadow singles were common.
    Ok, rant over ! :F

    • Isabella Muse

Me either. I mean they have like seriously mile high lashes when they use it but I don’t get that AT ALL! Singles are actually very missed by a lot of people even smaller color collections are very missed. Nowadays it’s endless palettes 🙁

  • Kathy A

I haven’t tried this but have a couple others. The one I thought I’d love was Clinique black honey lipstick and it looked awful on me. Bare Minerals foundation looks bad even though I have combination skin.

  • kellly

This is a great post! I love the chance to vent about things that just don’t cut it for me and not feel like I’m alone in not “getting it” about some of the things that get hyped to the moon!

  • MDW

Never understood the hype of Maybelline’s Great Lash. That is an old skool mascara. Maybe shows up on blondest of blondes. Eventually Lash Sensational arrived. And the reverse world kind of hype happened with that. Now it seems Sky High is not sky high.

    • Isabella Muse

it used to be in every mag back in the day ;D I never got it either!

  • Mandy S

Belif Moisturizing bomb- good in theory, goes on nicely…wake up with dry patches. Cerave in a tub mixed with an oil works better. Annoying!
Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask- obsessed with sleeping masks/packs, love other Laneige products (RIP to their old multiberry sleep pack). This did absolutely nothing. Whhhhyyy?
Clinique Moisture surge 72 hour- nada! Felt less moisturized than my normal routine.

Back to my beloved Cosrx hyaluronic acid cream and rice sleeping mask!

  • Liz

I might have to say every cream blush ever. I feel like I’m gaslighting myself trying to make that stuff work.

  • Brandy

I wasn’t too terribly impressed with Maybelline Sky High mascara on its own but combined with Maybelline Colossal or Maybelline The Rocket mascaras, the results are much more dramatic. I didn’t understand the hype around L’Oréal lash paradise. It flaked all over my eyes and left my eyes feeling itchy and swollen.

Another brand that seems to be loved by everyone and is supposed to work for all skin types but just didn’t work for me is CeraVe. I bought the entire line and wanted it to work so badly but nothing worked for my face. The foaming wash dried out my skin, the hydrating wash broke me out and burned, the PM lotion wasn’t moisturizing enough, the AM lotion made my face burn and itch, and the gel oil made me break out badly. I did like CeraVe in the tub for my body so it wasn’t a complete waste.

  • Toby

Oh, I love to hear other people’s dislikes. Mine, Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette-a powdery mess, Great Lash Mascara and Nars Orgasm Blush-glitter city.
